    The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Thought I'd start a thread dedicated to the 991 GT3 since it's been of particular interest in the main 991 thread.

I just found this article stating that the 991 GT3 will feature two radical departures from traditional GT3 and 911 fashions:

    1. The 991 GT3 will be exclusively featured with the new PDK transmission.
    2. The vehicle will be the first 911 to feature a centrally-mounted engine as opposed to a rear-mounted one.

Insane. The 991 is truly going to be something else.

The future Porsche 911 GT3 might have a central engine

February 7, 2011 - The Porsche 911 GT3 may have a central engine and will only be available in the company of a dual-clutch PDK transmission. The rumor has been confirmed by Porsche officials.

According to insiders, the future Porsche 911 GT3 will only be available in the version with the PDK transmission, and the engine will be centrally located.

In addition, people at Porsche have denied rumors about the introduction of the KERS system taken from Williams. Therefore, the hybrid version of the Porsche 911 GT3 won’t see the daylight soon, keeping the type KERS hybrid system for only 918 RSR.

The same sources suggest that the boxer engine that will be used by future 911 GT3 will have a displacement of 4.0 liters and will deliver around 480 hp. In addition, the mass will be reduced by more than 100 kilograms and the weight distribution will also be perfected since the engine will not be placed in the back, but will be mounted centrally.

This change will create the first central engine 911, an almost unbelievable change for a model known for its successive developments.

As for the PDK transmission, Porsche purists might make mischief when this will be offered exclusively on the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. This model could still be offered with a manual transmission, although the abilities of the PDK transmission are recognized even by ardent fans of the other brand in Stuttgart.

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Moving the engine one or two centimeters to the inside, will not make the 991 a centrally mounted engine .

As for the PDK, I ( still ) have mixed feelings about it. Of course it will be the only choice to compete m be more efficient, exploit the engine to the maximum and be better, faster then the others. Just look at the numbers for the GTS with PDK or without . Keeping a manual pushes the performance of the car into a lower level ( Carrera S manual becomes like the Carrera PDK )

But with PDK one looses a big part of joy, challenge, satisfaction of managing all the gear changes.

If the car is extremely performant and fast, just managing the PDK might actually become enough of a challenge in trying the keep the beast on the road .

I am very much looking forward to this car

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

That article is full of conradictions,if the engine is centraly located then its not a 911, nor will it be using its platform. Porsche oficials said the engine will move a bit foward with respect to the 997, but in all 991 models, I think they took that and twisted it for a nice headline.

Also Porsche has repeated time and time again that the GT version's philosophy is of a manual gearbox, now that they can fit the PDK on the next GT3/2 because of the 9A1 engine, they will have to offer it due to likely popular demand, but not exclusively, they will offer a manual (and likely as the "standard" equip) because of the above reason, and because in such a model there will be even higher demand for a manual still than in any other 911 in the lineup.

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Like with the introduction of the first PDK; Porsche will offer PDK 2.0 for the 991 GT3; this car will be faster in all categories and the customers will forget for the manual by themselves... Problem solved.

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

I think that article is based on the the information we got a couple of days ago from a rennlist member but distorting some parts

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

I love rumors...(un)fortunately the 911 is going to stay a 911...as much as some people love to see a mid-engined version or a V8 version.

As far as I know, a lot from this rumor is pure crap...not everything though.

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Certainly, most of it is BS. Porsche is doing their homework lately and the article is exaggerating a bit.

Based on RC's comments in the 991 thread, Porsche will be smart about the 991. That means..

          1. There will be a manual box, maybe 7 speed but also PDK optional because it's faster!

          2. The engine will be rear mounted still, standard with dynamic mounts perhaps

          3. I'm pretty sure it will be a 4.0L based on the normal flat-6.
(If a 997.2 limited white, middle east unit will come with 4.0L, certainly the 991 will get it)

          4. It won't have those silly stickers anymore

          5. It will have F1 style manually adaptable rear wing but ONLY if you are within one   second of any Ferrari

Ok the last two are wishful thinking

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Emm, what about some form of "quieter/re-engineered" sequential six-speed gearbox perhaps?

All the fun of manually shifting, with a rapid gear change.

Wolfgang Durheimer (ex - Porsche R&D Head) interview with Evo magazine...

    Porsche-The-Future_Evo-article_Rennteam.jpg

...from the interview it sounds like they are working on a "lightweight" PDK option for the 991 GT3, so maybe they could engineer it to fit to the awesome GT1-based Mezger motorsport engine that can generate 500bhp and over 9,000rpm! Smiley SmileySmiley SmileySmiley

(...expect the 4.0-litre GT3 RSR engine will live beyond the new 500 bhp "limited edition" GT3 RS...)

...now that would be a truly awesome combination for the Porsche 991 GT3 RS ! ! !

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Perhaps a PDK - S that mimics a sequential gearbox is what they have in mind. In other words the worlds fastest "Sportomatic"

Re: The Porsche 991 GT3 thread

Does that mean that there will still be a clutch peddle just like the sequential?
