After listening to a 610 hp V10 engine for over 700 km this weekend, I wouldn't set a foot in an ELV even if this thing does 0-100 kph in one second.  angry

Next family car on our radar: RS6 Performance or next gen Cayenne Turbo (if they get the exhaust sound right).

You are going all out Audi Smiley

Then again, so would I. These Audis are being more fun than Porsches angry

Not even sure the engine is from Audi...originally but you are right, it isn't enough for Porsche to satisfy a small group of people with their GT models but bore the other ones to death. Smiley Porsche, a legend and they cannot get an exhaust/engine sound right? Seriously?! Smiley Was it really necessary to switch to a 4-cyl. engine (Boxster)? In all seriousness but at the end, I think it comes down to money and gain margins, not necessarily emissions and new noise legislations. Car manufacturers always seem to find a way...look at the R8...or Aston Martin and Maserati...or even their own GT models. Smiley Emotions come from engine/exhaust sound as well and while I love the Tesla S as a gadget lover, I would probably be very unhappy with this car if it was my only one.

The choice of the name "Autopilot" for this system was wrong , because it gives rise to expectations on the part of the users which the system cannot safely fulfil.

but I agree - the name is indeed wrong, they should have called it drive assistent or something like that.

Re: Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash

Autopilot is a cool marketing name, like said above, it poorly describes what it is... It doesn't even work on rural streets no? Just on the highway?

Re: Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash

Volvo calls this Pilot Assist.... it seems they even been scared to call it AutoPilot Assist.

Mercedes calls it "intelligent drive". In fact - it seems that the guy watching Harry Potter was less intelligent. So maybe Tesla should call it "drive for less intelligent"... just an idea broken heart

Re: Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash

Yes, Autopilot may not be an appropriate name for the system but the driver clearly knew the drill (I think the system shows clear warnings that you should leave the hands on the steering wheel) and what the system can and cannot do, so why the heck would he watch a Harry Potter movie during the drive? enlightened

They call it autopilot because of the plane term where you always have a pilot there watching. Guess some people don't relate to that.

They will be the people who realise that a) where aircraft or ship autopilot systems are concerned there is very seldom need for human intervention within seconds to avoid a collision,or even a split second as was the case with the Tesla, and b) that planes and ships are fitted with radar systems which show up other traffic all around them, whereas Teslas are fitted with cameras with a limited field of view and inadequately developed software which apparently is not yet capable of adequately interpreting what they can see.

People should not be misled by its name to relate the Tesla system to the greater capabilities of "real" autopilot systems.
Volvo, for example, will have made a conscious decision when arriving at the name "Pilot Assist".

Re: Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash

Ships, aircrafts, when they engaged autopilot, there will be NOTHING around them that might move into their intend path, unlike cars where people keep switching lanes and stuff.

Only way for cars to have that is to confine the auto-piloted cars to a lane that don't allowed merging into or out of, so every car can travel in a straight line at a constant speed. And only on empty stretch of motorways.

Re: Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash

For a "real" Autopilot to work, all cars would need to be networked with each other and the roads, stopping lights, etc. would need to have sensors to communicate with that "car network". It will take decades for such a system to be up and running in major traffic hotspots...

I would think that there would already be a technological committee working on the networking standards / protocol for all vehicles to communicate with.

Confusing write-up.  It said the Tesla DID NOT detect a wood stake road.  I assume this meant that as a result, it hit this wood stake, then lost control, and then hit 20 more wood stakes?  This explains why it drove off the road.

Or, did it DETECT the wood stake, then swerved (the only other choice was to swerve into oncoming traffic), only to hit 20 wood stakes as a result.  This also explains why it drove off the road.

Or, were they expecting the Tesla to swerve onto oncoming traffic instead?  WAS THERE oncoming traffic, and the only real choice was to swerve off the road?

Re: Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash

I don't have a Tesla with Autopilot but I am pretty sure that when the driver activates the Autopilot, some sort of disclaimer pops up and explains what to do...or what not to do. Am I right?

So do some Tesla drivers have a lack in reading skills or what is going on? yes

Saw some YouTube videos with the same thing...Autopilot on...driver had no hands on the steering wheel.

To be honest, I am highly fascinated by the software and the tech used in Tesla cars. This alone would be a reason for me to get one. If I could afford one, as an addition to my current (car) stable, I would definitely get one. Just for fun... Smiley
