Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Comparison test by German Auto Zeitung.

    Aston Martin DBS

    0-100km/h: 4.3s
    0-160km/h: 8.6s
    0-200km/h: 12.7s
    Weight: 1740kg
    AZ test track time: 1.43,6min

    Mercedes CL65 AMG

    0-100km/h: 4.6s
    0-160km/h: 8.9s
    0-200km/h:12.8s
    Weight: 2250kg(!)
    AZ test track time: 1.49,4min

Few remarks by AZ stuff: DBS far better drivers car, way more drive dynamics in DBS, brakes far better at DBS, CL65 more comfortable car for eldery...

    Tiff drives DBS:

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

    Thanks Kreso!

No doubt the DBS is a class act and a lot of fun.

By comparison the CL65 is better for the neurologically challenged and also for those who think that bulbous is better. In fact, I am sure that Rosanne Barr loves her CL65 that she shares a resemblance to.

The CL65 can never be what the DBS is, and that is a thoroughbred GT. Its a shame that Mercedes seems blind to what one really is.

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Straight line performance of the DBS is a pleasant surprise. As is braking and handling. Kudos tu Aston.

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Can't believe the DBS bests the 65AMG in all the figures listed above, wow...

    Lightweight rules!

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Where is the tracktests? On a real racetrack?

Yes. The CL65 is a fat pig. Its slalom speed was just a hair over 58 km/h .

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Wow! DB9 as fast as a 65AMG in a straight line?
    Impressive stuff

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

    Well...22xx kg...it's a hell of a lot!!
The DBS is just amazing, even if i do not know if i would go for a DBS having the opportunity to pick a DB9 for 50000 pounds or so less

Kreso, your abstract is slightly biased and does not reflect what Autozeitung really wrote. Sure they stated that DBS is more agile but neither did they write that brakes are "far better" nor that the CL65 is for "eldery".

Actually the conclusion by the Autozeitung staff writer was that "The CL wins this comparison by far but DBS is better handling car" (and yes I know that this is due to the teutonic car magazine point system bc CL's boot is larger )

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

I have been waiting for your reply ZZ since you own a CL

true -- but don't get me wrong, IMHO the CL 65 is kind of ridiciolous. But I know the mentioned Auto Zeitung article -- and this recapitulation is... well, kresonized!

    BTW, I'd rather get a CL500 and a AM Vantage V8 for DBS/CL65 money.

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

WBH/VKSF is not going to like reading this.

    Soenke,

Yes, I did little bit of personal opinion in the end BUT, in AZ drive dynamics rating DBS was way above CL65. Regarding brakes-DBS results in braking was better as well.
And, you are probably biased as well since you own CL.

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

i dont understand why these 2 cars are actually being compared: while the demographics of the potential customers might overlap, the desired driving experience is clearly different.

i mean noone would compare the vantage to a SL or such, right?

for me its rather clear that the DBS is more of a sporty car, while the CL is a power crazed cruiser....

DBS Vs. Panamaer would be an interesting test...

No this is DBS not DB9, CL65 will eat the DB9 for breakfast. DBS is a different animal.

Always amusing to hear "informed" impressions from journalists (and those who believe everything they read/hear)....they don't hand those jobs out to just anyone...

Mysteriously, many in SiliconValley choose to commute via CL63 030/S65...and presumably some will soon migrate to SL63 030....and in Manhattan many guys are driven around in S550s....

Just don't know of many smart money guys in SF/SiliconValley/Manhattan/Greenwich/BevHills/Lond/Munich/Frankfurt (isn't anywhere else considered Podunk???) who choose to commute via P/F...

BTW, Mercedes S/CL 63/65 AMG and ML 63 AMG are by far the most popular cars amoung known criminals and drug dealers in Russia and all eastern Europe.

It seems to me that you and other fluent money hunting wizzards SF/SiliconValley/Manhattan/Greenwich/BevHills influenced a lot these clowns... In styling of living as well...

Also did not see that many S/CL 63/65 fans in London/Munich/Frankfurt...

And can you imagine Investment Bankars driving CL 63 in white with tinted glasses I do not...

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Those overweight but strangely alluring CL/SL/S AMGs are the commuter's choice for most of the city slickers I know...

Really strange that there aren't more people driving the Astons or Masers (which cost the same or less)

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Affluent Londoners would buy a Flying Spur over an AMG S-class anytime! And DBS over CL65. To the people with old money anywhere in the world, AMG cars are crass and very beverly hills/Miami...which explains why WBH and his mates love it.

Well, I used a F430 for commuting for two years. Since some months with a CL 500 as my daily driver... in retrospective... I do not understand why I gave me such a hard time in the F430. Ferrari/Lamborghini/AM etc are great cars and I can't wait for my next F to arrive -- but I will never fool me again that such a car is capable of daily commuting. It is not, for various reasons (attention, noise, reliability, weather-dependency, parking, visibility, fuel consumption/range).

Commuting in a car like S/CL is so relaxing -- and Distronic radars have saved me from ramming the car in front of me twice... (which probably would not have happened in a F430 though, where adrenaline is pumping all the time -- but do you want this in a traffic jam driving home after a hard day* at the office?)

    I know, was a typo oops ...
CL65 would eat a DB9 for breakfast indeed...

Strangely though, there was a local test between quite a few cars including GT3RS, Superleggera, Turbo, Zonda S, M3, M6, R8, CL65 and DB9 among others... The DB9 didnt do that bad compared to the AMG, even though it took place at a very high altitude so the AMG's forced induction should have given it aa bigger advantage..
I should try and post it sometime...

Re: Aston Martin DBS vs. Mercedes CL65 AMG

Haha zzboba, you are now experiencing something that a lot of us here know: Life is much easier if you don't have to use your Aston/Ferrari/Lambo/any other exotic as a daily driver! I used to have this argument with my friend who drove a Lotus Exige as his daily ride (and a F360 as his weekend toy). He used to argue till he is blue that you don't need a BMW/Merc/Audi as a daily driver, you can do with a low slung sports car. One day someone wrote off his Exige, and he borrowed his brother's S500 for a month. To cut the story short, he now drives a BMW 645i as his daily driver and a F430 for the weekend.

Re: Aston Martin DBS in Autocar

I have just finished reading the DBS test in the Autocar (UK weekly magazine). Not a great review in some areas and slightly below expectation.

Re: Aston Martin DBS in Autocar

In latest issue of EVO DBS was better then CL65 again but, not better then Bentley GT Speed...
