Sneak peak of the second gen. Panamera

Thanks for the link! That car looks like the final deal on it's way to a photo shoot? Would we maybe see a surprise already @ Geneva instead of Paris?

No way, it is even possible that we get for the first time a delay. They have huge problems, electronic was/is one mayor problem and some new production processes with glueing.

Thanks for the input Smiley. Just so seldom one see a car that looks to be a production version so much ahead of release. let's hope that they fix the production issues and that the car will be unveiled in Paris.

Re: Panamera 2016 (Gen.2) Thread Closed

This looks very staged. So obviously, we don't get to see what is of most interest to most, namely, the shape of the rear hatch and hopefully the elimination of the ugly hatchback hump.

Re: Panamera 2016 (Gen.2) Thread Closed

I've never understood why there is such hate for the so-called "hump". Not only is it not at all "ugly" in my eyes, it is in fact the aspect of the design that gives the car character and distinction, and differentiates it from other hatchback sedans, most notably the Audi A7 and variants. Getting rid of the "hump" is just going to leave the Panamera with a bland, generic design tarted up with a few cosmetic flourishes here and there.

De gustibus non est disputandum and all that. You say "hatchback", I say "humpback"...

I suppose one could argue a vague resemblance. But really, would it be an improvement for the Panamera to look like this?

    Stefan,

Your photo's show the modelling for the 2012 Sport Turismo show car. The production version shown in the black test mule photo's looks to have significant changes to that car. The most obvious external change, presumably done on cost grounds, is that the Sport Tourer shares the rear doors of the Panamera hatch so they slope somewhat awkwardly downward from the stretch and flattened roof on the Tourer. Volvo used to do this on the 240 series wagon and tried to hide it the curved shape of the top of the donor 240 series saloon rear doors with satin black paint on the body around the door frames.

Re: Panamera 2016 (Gen.2) Thread Closed

Had a chance to really study the Panameras on display at my dealer today.  I was seeing if the "hump" really distracts, and have concluded that, in person, the hump does not--at least to my eye--seem noticeable at all.  In pictures, yes, but in person, no.  Pictures present a 2 dimensional perspective, real life provides a three dimensional one.

In pictures, the camera distorts the rear, making it appear that it rounds off more than it actually does, which adds an appearance of a roof hump as the lines round down toward the rear.   In the current FL, the designers have also made the rear slant down a bit, as opposed to being "rounded and down".   I think the curve of the rear side windows adds to the illusion, leaving too much mass over the rear wheel well.  Designers of the next generation will hopefully adjust this rear side window design, having it penetrate more into the body panel.

I know I won't convince "hump" viewers, but I thought i would just pass on my experience this morning.  I look forward to the next generation debut...

Re: Panamera 2016 (Gen.2) Thread Closed

Modern shaped cars are very hard to capture on a flat pic.

Re: Panamera 2016 (Gen.2) Thread Closed

Sorry, I did not intend to say "humpback" but rather "hunchback". As in

I think humpback was closer. That hunchback looks more like a Pontiac Aztek.

You can see everything in here from the shapes of the DRLs and headlights to the one-piece taillight and PORSCHE-branded unit in the same vein as that on the Sport Turismo concept. It's ready.

Now the question remains: Beijing/Shanghai reveal next month or Paris in October?

Re: Panamera 2016 (Gen.2) Thread Closed

The rear is better than on the old one but still - the Sport Turismo is the winner here.

You can also see that the rear door cut out is exactly like on the ST. Unfortunately the side vents are not the same.

I don't like those little window-triangles on rear and front windows. If you cant design a door where the entire windows has space than you didn't do the job right. Especially for a company which says form follow function! Smiley

Sounds right. It's probably the biggest market for them. Never have I seen more Panameras than in China. They are everywhere.

    Lars997:

I don't get it. Why isn't this car being made? It's like 10x better designed than the Panamera. It literally fixes everything wrong with the Panamera's design, particularly the ugly rear. And the funny thing is that the ST is not one of those crazy, unrealistic concepts. It literally looks like a normal car on the outside that could be produced almost identically to the concept.
