    Driving Formula cars

A good friend of mine booked a day with formula cars for me, because he feels that those street cars are kind of boring. (Actually he wanted to get me into a MIG 29,  but it seems, that they are out of service at the moment. If someone already did that, I'd very much like to read your experience).

Back to the topic - the day was split in three parts. First part was basic theory, where topics like weight transfer, degressive braking, correct cornering, missing nannies und left foot braking where explained - mainly to prevent drivers from killing themselves immediately. I do have some track experience, but there is always something you can learn.

Second part was driving in a Formula Renault (around 210 bhp/500kg)  to get used to the unusual seating position, left foot braking, slicks and what they call "clutch" which is like 5mm from fully open to fully closed.

I would have never believed how much fun it is to drive these cars, way more than anything else I've driven before. Acceleration is ok though not amazing, but driving curves with warm tires is like running on rails.

Third part of the day was driving a GP2 car (650bhp, 700kg, carbon brakes).  Actually the event is announced for driving a F1 car, but for reasons I don't want to get into, they were not available

What should I say ? I'm still totally flashed from that experience. The speed, the grip, the brakes and the sound are from a different planet. I had to laugh in every corner, because the speed and sensation were so unreal.  Still the car was "easy" to drive for me (likely less than 50% of what the car is capable of).  In one situation I hit the brake too hard at the end of a long straight (the brake can decelerate the car with 4g ) when the rear went loose and decided to take a different direction, but was very easy to get back.  Seating position is sort of comfortable also, which I didn't expect - well it's not like the 18way sofa seat in my Turbo, but I can image sitting in there for an hour or so.

If you are interested in track racing and never drove such a beast  I highly recommend to do so.  But beware, you may become as addicted as I am now.

    - Rick

PS: There are also some aspects of that particular event I didn't like too much. PM me if you are interested

    Re: Driving Formula cars

Whoah, Rick, that sounds like a blast!
About the MiG-29 part... angel I want friends like that! I read some reports of people who did that already some 10-15 years ago, and they were absolutely stunning. There are quite some movies about it on youtube as well... I would say go for it! But if you do, you'll have to post more than a couple of pictures! kiss
    Cheers, Joost

    Re: Driving Formula cars

Looks really good and having the pleasure to drive open wheel cars from time to time, I know what you are talking about. Even the ones which are not overly powerful gives a whole new meaning to the expression grip, which then translates into a new level of driving experience.

Also do not underestimate the speed. Cornering in these cars often feels like you are putling along, but try to follow at these speeds in a fast streetcar and you will realise how fast you are actually going. In F1 which is obviously extreme, the safety car pushed at max can hardly keep the tyres warm on the F1 cars angel

Thanks Joost. I'm a space geek but unfortunately getting old faster than Jeff Bezos e.a. are getting their space travel companies running. I've seen some of those videos and the opportunity to see the earth from the stratosphere (and thereby prove that it is flat;) ) is just mind blowing. Here is one of those videos in case someone is interested in this type of stuff

    Re: Driving Formula cars

My brother in law did that tourist MIG flight in Russia . Don't know the details, but he had an amazing time .

I have done some Formula Renault driving . It is just fantastic . As you say, even with just over 200HP you get an incredible experience . Needs a bit of getting used to driving different lines and managing the very late braking . So much fun . GTxx.. cars do feel like slugs after that .

I can't imagine what it would be in a 650 HP single seater !!!

Was that event somewhere in the south of France ? I checked out once a place to drive the F1 but never actually booked it .

Yes, it's the former AGS test track in Le Luc (https://www.circuitduvar.com)

Thats' it . AGS at circuit du Var .  How is the track to drive ? I saw that renting it completely for a day is not very expensive .  Is it satisfying enough to drive a full day or two ?

    Re: Driving Formula cars

The track is rather short, not too technical, but has some nice twists, like a long fast right going slightly uphill. 5th gear is likely what you can achieve in a GT3 RS. I haven't checked, but don't think, that it complies with FIA safety standards. Run-off areas are available, but mostly grass (if I remember correctly).  There is a nice restaurant at the track that you'll need for the 2h break during noon. The personal is very friendly and helpful. For me it would be ok for a day but likely not for two.

If you consider renting a track, you may want to have a look at  https://grobnik.hr, which is fast and quite technical. As an additional plus, it's close to the sea with some nice hotels for the wifes
