    older 911 import from Europe

    I am considering importing an older 911 (72-73) from Europe and I was wondering if anyone on this forum has done this, or knows how easy or difficult this would be? The intention would be to use the car on the street, but not everyday.

    Since I live in California, there are slightly different smog requirements, however cars built before 1976 are smog exempt.

    Anybody know?

    Rick - I don't think it's difficult, since the car is over 25 yrs old, it should be exempt from the relevant DOT/EPA regulations.

    However, this is HIGHLY unusual. Most importing is done from California to Europe, not the other way around. Generally, the CA cars are much better preserved and rust-free.

    Are you importing an RS or something rare? If not, I'd consider looking more in your native state first.

    I know it sounds odd, cause the best cars are usually found in this part of the world. I am intrigued by www.911classics.co. I travel to the UK relatively frequently and plan to look them up on my next visit.

    Sort of a old/car new/car build-to-suit company. Other than what's on their website I know nothing about them.

    The link didn't work for me. However, allow me to make a few guesses about your situation. Ignore them if they don't apply to you. I'm guessing this company does really good custom early 911 projects, possibly with updated motors. These are very attractive setups, but you don't have to go to the UK to get them. There are some evil geniuses at TRE motorsports in southern California that will build anything you want starting with an early 911.

    Rick - that link didn't work for me either. I think Keith's suggestion is a good one. I've never been to the shop nor seen one of their cars, but Dave is a very nice guy on the phone.

    Since the Pound is so strong relative to the dollar, I think looking at TRE might make more financial sense too.

    You all are exactly right, the above co (appears) to be able to build some evil cars. I will also check out TRE, as I would rather spend $$ in the US than overseas. One thing that interests me with 911classic is that they find an old chassis, strip/repair, then galvanize the whole thing to prevent rust, a problem with these older cars.

    Looks like a great place from the website! If you find something special while you're there, I wouldn't let the import process scare you. I've never done it myself, but I did inquire and it's pretty easy with a car over 25yrs old (1980 or older now - time flies).
