    PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

    Hi Guys,
Went along to the porsche day at Silverstone on Monday, AMAZING DAY!

Had the oppturnity to try out my iphone 3G with the new PCM 3.0. Noticed a few people on here wanted to know if it was compatible. Well, im glad to inform you that it is! It works with the PCM under the hands free profile. It downloaded all my contacts onto the PCM and worked no problem! It also connected to my iphone using the audio interface and played music, however, im not sure you can do both, as the iphone switched to airplane mode in order to work. I didnt have a chance to have investigate this further as my time to drive came along!

    Hope this answers some questions

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

Do you need the telephone module as well?

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

    yes you do.

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

Depends on 'which telephone module' you are referring to. I think you need the bluetooth telephone option, which uses the mobile phone as the phone and just uses the PCM as the user interface and phonebook.

I don't think you want the phone prep (which puts a phone INTO the car that can handshake with your phone to use its SIM card or allow you to plug in your SIM card)

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

I didn't see this posted elsewhere, but regarding the iPhone and PCM 3.0, the iPhone isn't supported for charging with the audio interface. Older iPod models work (e.g., 5g). Wonder if this is something that Porsche can address? (not sure if it's just a cable issue or more than that)

As older iPod cables are compatible with the iPhone for charge+data, I would imagine this is a software issue either with the PCM or with the iPhone.

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

Not compatible with all iPhones or just not compatible with the newest iPhone "3G"?

The iPhone 3G removed the legacy pins on the connector that used to be used for charging over firewire, and now only supports charging over the USB pins. Many aftermarket charging stations and cables use the old firewire pins in because you can push more power through them and charge the phone more quickly. Any third party dock connector that relied on those firewire pins will not be able to charge an iPhone 3G.

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

    Nugget is correct.

I found that the old iPod devices used the firewire interface (which was 12v) and the newer iPod devices now use only the USB interface (which is 5v) - supposedly some firewire interfaces were burning up USB devices. So, the Porsche audio interace uses the firewire interface and won't charge USB interface iPods. bummer.

I'd think there's got to be some aftermarket firewire->USB interface dongle that steps down the 12v to 5v, but haven't had a chance to check into it yet. Porsche could address this if they wanted to - at least as simply doing a new cable.

worst case for charging on the road, the USB port in the audio interface does charge the iPhone when you connect it using a normal iPod cable. I was just looking to have to avoid still having to use a cigarette lighter power adapter...

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

    Thanks Very useful info

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

I haven't tried it but this adapter sounds like it would solve the charging issue with the 3G iPhone and the newest iPods.

Thanks! Just the type of device that I figured someone had to have

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

I found out that the newer ipods and iphones are no longer compatible with older interfaces as far as charging goes. Why Apple changed their designs, I'll never know but I found a solution:

    http://www.scosche.com/passport

It's coming out at the end of this month and should fix these issues.

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

Ok, so both of the two seem to do what one needs:
    http://cablejive.com/charge_converter.html
    http://www.scosche.com/passport

The trick then is just get one of these, and install it inline with the IPOD cable under the center console. That will take some more work to splice it in, but then you end up with a clean USB pin charging solution from your Porsche ipod interface.

So where can one buy two ipod interface connectors to splice into the cable on the Porsche to get this converter installed?

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

The Cablejive one seems like it'd be a bit too big and costs more too.

Interesting idea to install this under the pod interface but I wonder if this would cause the older ipods/iphones not to work. Maybe it'd be better to just plug it into the newer versions instead.

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

I haven't seen much mentioned about the 40GB hard drive that comes with the Navigation option. Does this allow music to be copied from other devices like the iPod?

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

I think that those adapters are a band-aid. The iPhone has a great clean audio interface and this device adds another electronic stage in the mix. I agree that Apple was wrong in changing the interface, but PAG should fix theirs.

In the news cars there is not a whole lot of space to store an iPhone/iPod and its bulky cable - to add an adapter plug compounds the problem.

Re: PCM 3.0 and iphone 3G

If you look at the specs for one of the two (cannot remember which one) it states that it only does the power signal transfer and conversion, from the 12v Firewire pins, to the 5v USB 2 pins. All other signals are passed through untouched.

If Porsche were to implement a fix, this is exactly the same thing they would do to their interface, they would have to add a 12vdc to 5vdc converter with regulation (thats probably what the circuitry in those is about).

I will agree, Porsche needs to come out with an official fix for this, that replaces the cable under the covers from the PCM to the iPod outlet with a new cable and electronics to allow charging via BOTH the FireWire and the USB 2 pins of the connector.

I understand that, but I am always leery of additional switching electronics near the audio signals. PAG should replace the cable adding the 5V supply in a compact form packaged inside the connector. Will they do it right? we can only hope.
