Finalizing order and need some feedback

Hey everyone....im about to finalize my order this week in Dubai for an October production 997S and would greatly appreciate your comments :

    997S $79,400
Metallic paint (Seal Grey) $ 740
    Sport Chrono Pack $692
    Sport Seats $665
    Fire Extinguisher $135
Leather Seats with Full Leather Interior (Black) $2,513
    Telephone Module $ 712

Some questions i would greatly appreciate your help on:

    1. Sport Shifter (Code XCZ) $ 520. Is this option worth going for? I understand that the standard manual gear is already 15% shorter then a 996. Will this option make it easier and more sporty to drive and better acceleration times? The dealer was not sure.
    2. Sports Exhuast System (XLF) $ 1,581. Other then having a noiser and nicer sounding exhaust, does it also give more power?
    3. The full leather interior is an expensive option and any comments on the Leather seats with Leatherette interior (Code 983) $ 1,225. Again the dealer was not too sure. I have owned a 996 with full leather and was nice. But not sure about how the leatherette interior is like and what the difference over a standard interior is?

Finally any options you think i missed out and should go for?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

Can't help much because I haven't seen the 997 in the flesh yet but assuming the gear shift linkage is the same as the 996 (big assumption and I really don't know), you can do it as a DIY project for $US 200 and have some personal satisfaction in less than 2 hours (parts from B&M are identical to Porsche, except that they are blue instead of black).
For the rest, though it's very expensive and I won't be paying for it myself, the full leather is really nice.
    The sport exhaust is great!

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

    hi
sport shifter is definetly worth going for, specially at this price.it will give you faster shifting and consequently better performance, dont even think about it..it worth. for the sport exhaust it has nothing to do with performance ,its just aural .the 997s already has a very nice engine sound ,but if you like more ,go for it. i strongly advice you to go for full leather interior, even tough standard interior has a very good quality ,all leather is just so much better and its even much nicer than 996 full leather because you have visible stitching on all the dashboard.
i would advice you to add 2 option :
1-option XPA wich is the thicker sport steering wheel in leather ,that has a better look and better feel
2-option 635 that is park assist just because its practical
    enjoy your car!

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

sportshifter is worth it, but if u are unsure, try one out, or leave it off your order, you can always add it later.

sports exhuast can also be added later, it is VERY worth it, leave it off for now if you want.

full leather, you MUST get, without the porsche interiors look very cheap. and it is highly impractical/impossible to add this option aftermarket.

of all those, you MUST get full leather

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

Short shifter is worth going for if you don't mind that you have to push hard in the gears when the gearbox and oil is cold.
Please think about this before you order, maybe not an issue in Dubai, but in other country's definitely

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

Unless you've driven a car with a short shifter and are comfortable with the increased shifting effort, I'd suggest driving one before you finalize your order, or drop that option and get one installed afterward if you are able to drive one and like it. I have the B&M under car short shift kit and highly recommend it. Here's a thread from when I had it installed:

    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=porsche&Number=27978

The sport exhaust is a definite must, and at that price I would order it with the car, so you'll have the dash switch, and the slightly different exhaust tips.

Full leather is a must on these cars. My first 996 didn't have it, but my last 2 have, and there's a world of difference. Of course, all the PR pix we've seen of the 997 include full leather, so who knows what the plastic interior will look like, but if it's anything like the 996 or Cayenne (the texture looks like the surface of a basket ball that was left out in the sun too long ), I wouldn't want to stare at that while I was driving.

On the sport seats, I suggest sitting in them before you order--on the 996, many people (including me) felt they were uncomfortable, especially around the shoulder area.

    Bose vs Sport Exhaust?

Is the Bose system worth it? Would you guys get the sport exhaust over the Bose system? I'm trying to not go too crazy over the options...
    Thanks.

    Good suggestion.

I think, maybe, Porsche used Teo Fabi to approve the sport seats.

The sport seats do have better side bolsters than the stock ones. But, higher up the back-rest, where one finds the "wings", they cause MY body to "pop out" of the shoulder retention feature for lack of a good fit.

I have them in my '01 TT Coupe and they always seem to push on my scapula, which prevents my upper torso (between my shoulders) from coming into comfortable contact with the back rest. This causes the intended shoulder-retention "socket" to be less effective, forcing me to have to brace myself by gripping the wheel harder than I would like for support in corners. They are NOT a good substitute for GT3 seats!

As a practical matter, the 996 sport seats may only LOOK sportier than the standard seats (with their eye-catching hard backs, etc.). Compared A/B (01' has 'em, '04 has not - I learned), the regular seats give 95% of the holding power with far fewer comfort or ingress/egress issues.

Future order guides might want to call them "Sporty Seats" instead of sport seats

    YMMV.

Definitely not. If sound quality is important have a system put in by a car audio specialist. The sports exhaust is a much better option.

Mike has given you excellent advice (as usual), but I would hold out some hope that the new 997 sport seats are improved in this area. They look quite different than the 996 sport seats in photos, but the proof is in the sitting

    My personal two cents:

    1. full leather is important on a Cab but not necessarily on a Coupe. The 997 S looks nice without full leather too but of course the leather provides that certain look and feel.
    2. the short shifter won't really give you shorter shifting times and yes, the Aisin gearbox already uses a shorter gear way.
I would go for it anyway but it is your choice.
    3. Chrono Sport is a MUST. Everybody who will drive it, will agree with me.
    4. the sport exhaust does not give you more power but a very nice throaty flat 6 sound. I would go for it but the 997 S is already a little bit louder than the 997, so this is really some sort of personal preference.
    5. Telephone module is OK but don't forget the BOSE and the CD-changer!

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

Everyones got good points regarding the various options. Unfortunately, now I'm more confused...well I got a couple of more months before I'm ready to place a order. Hopefully, I'll have things sorted for my order by then...

the standard sound system of 997 is much better over the 996,but i would go for it instead of sport exhaust just because you cant retrofit bose ,but you can put the sport exhaust anytime.
go for bose ,and retrofit the exhaust later

    agreed 100% !!!

    agreed 100%

as i have always suggested to people who are pondering what options to order and have a few that are iffy...

order as many as you can , especially the ones that aren't retrofittable, and order those first.

options like seats/exhaust/(to some extent) -lights (even though you will lose the autoleveling feature in xenons from aftermarket) - short shifters/coloured trim pieces can always be added aftermarket

get the important things, like bose, PCM, full leather, suspension/stability control

those are things that you may end up regretting not having, and unlike the things mentioned earlier, you will have to live with your decision.

    Re: agreed 100% !!!

i am glad to read that the sport seats can be added later.

i had them on the 996 turbo and they were really unconfrtoble.so i decided not to put them on the 997s.but just in case one day i wanted to add them...
instead i ordered the bose system which i think is worth going for.

Sport chrono is FUGLY! soft leather (?) seat inserts

Why would you want a huge wart on your supposed-to-be-retro sleek dashline?

That thing looks like a conspicuous dumb afterthought, aftermarket addition IMO.

Also, I forgot what it is called, but the "soft" or "natural" leather inserts on the seat cushion and back is REALLY nice in earlier 996s. The standard leather seats are a bit too plasticky, vinyl looking I think.

    Get the Bose system!!!!

This way at least you have the holes cut and the grilles for the additional speakers, even though you may want to change the speakers.

probably cheaper and better looking than getting a whole new system hacked and wired into the interior panels

Sport shifter is a matter of personal preference ONLY

It doesn;t improve anything (unless maybe you race the car).

It just feels harder, more notchy. I've had both and actually prefer the stock unit.

It's like fake gates, the system is a cable system and should FEEL like one, right?

If it were direct linkage to the tranny, (like, say, BMW) then it should feel notchy, right?

Frankly, Mike, I doubt that too many of the people at Porsche today would remember who Teo Fabi was.

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

    1. I'm not sure
    2. MUST have, no question asked
    3. Not really worth it IMO.

Other than that your options sound pretty good .

I must be getting too old for this stuff

I couldn't think of a Porsche racing pilot of reasonable fame that was more compactly built than he

Re: Finalizing order and need some feedback

1- Don't know as I've never tried it, but from the forum literature, I 'd YES.
    2- YES, naturally.
3- YES, and it should be standard on a car of that category.

Hmm. You could never say that Walter Roehrl is compactly built, so I get what you mean.
