    993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

There are cars that are available for sale for the same approximate price with warranty. I would like your opinion on what would be a better car to buy for a weekend toy, long term value, etc.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

No comparison.....the 993 Turbo S has achieved collector car status due to it's low production and being the last and fastest of the "air-cooled" turbos. It will maintain it's value for a long time.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

    I also voted 993TTS.

However, my answer would have been different if you needed a daily driver. Then, clearly, the 996TTS is the better car.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

I'll second (third?) that. Given your priorities, the 993 is a much, much better choice. It's actually faster to boot.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

Thanks for the votes guys. The 993 turbo s is dark blue with grey nappa leather and has only 16000km on the clock. My decision has been made much easier.

That sounds like a nice car! 993TTS is definitely a classic - I would get that in an instant

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

Totally agree. The 993TTS is an all-time great car.

The main advantage of the 996TT is its ready ability to be hyper-tuned up to 600HP with lots of packages available, and with engine rebuilds tunable to 800+ with daily driveability. So get both, but get the 993TTS first.

Of course the 993TT is tunable too (500hp is very easy, 600hp possible), but maybe the ceiling is a little lower than the water-cooled car

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

You guys are pretty tough on the 996. The collector-side of the 993TTS S is of course something but that does not make you drive better. As far as I'm concerned the 996 is a superior car to drive in almost all conditions. A key distinctive point compared to the 993 is the extreme stiffness of the 996 TT chassis. So I voted 996TT: because a Porsche is there to be driven, not to be "collected". If it's so much of a "collector" car you may even be scared to drive it as it should be then where's the fun?

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

No doubt the 993TTS is a classic, but the 996TT is really better in almost every category. I've had both.

Better doesn't always mean more enjoyable. I think theh 993 has more compact dimensions that give it a more sporty and tossable character and is more beautiful (and better made).

But, the 996 is certainly more stable and more secure (PSM)

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

993 Turbo S... It's a absolute classic and looks 100X better than the 996 Turbo. Sounds much better to and that car YOU will have to drive, In a 996 Turbo I've heard that you are just a passenger while the car does its own thing i.e its more challenging.

    Both cars are awesome though

Had both is succession. The 996tt is a much better car in everything but.. it needs a stiffer suspension and at least ecu programming to start exploiting its potential since porsche under tuned the car for marketing reasons. The 993tts is nice but sorry it just can't do the things that the 996tt can, not even close. The 996tt has huge potential while the 993tts is pretty difficult to drive fast - at least for an non race-driver and on public roads. The 996tt you can push hard and hard and enjoy its (and your) limits with safety. If u try that on the 993tts then..
Having said that the 993tts (although its really a 993tt with many options) is more rare and quite a car to have as a classic.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

Thats just what I meant... The 996 is much more capable, but I think the 993 is more fun (while not really safer/faster) to drive

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

Appologies for jumping in on an old thread, but could someone list the differences between the 993 turbo S and 996 turbo...or perhaps point me towards the info?

    Thanks in advance.

To me, the 993TTS was the epitome of 911Turbo styling, the 996TT/TTS are just a bit more GT-ish, and gone are the classic solo round headlamps-fortunately brought back on the 997 series.

Inside, the 993TTS interior is less refined than in the 996TT/TTS, but even more modern in the 997 (my main gripe with the 997 inside is the steering wheel and too much darn gray and silver plastic on the dashboard).

The 993TTS versus 996TT/TTS engines are wholly different, yes both are GT1-based, dry-sumped 3.6L Boxer 6's, but:
    Air-cooled vs. water-cooled,
    443 peak hp (Europe) vs. 420 (a DECREASE ),
431 peak lb-ft torque vs. 413 (lower again),
    2 valves/cylinder vs. DOHC 4 valves/cyl.,
    Max boost 0.94BAR vs. 0.80BAR,
And the 996TT went to Variocam Plus, taking the original Variocam system with phase-shifting, variable-valve timing acting on intake valves, and adding a two-stage, variable lift via variable hydraulic tappets....I'm starting to get out of my knowledge zone here, this thread definitely needs a good Fritz post to bring it together....

Regardless, both cars are READILY TUNABLE, up to 600 peak HP reliably without major engine reinforcements, probably the most important feature that both iterations of the 911Turbo have in common.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

Thanks for the info Turbo Al
I hate to sound like such a n00b...but then again, I'll never learn if I don't ask.

No problem Neeso. This is a great forum. Lots of info., especially on Porsche cars from usually unbiased sources.

    Re: 993 turbo S or 996 turbo ?

I didnt go throw the posts i just state my opinion

I used to own a 911 3.6 Turbo Still to Date the only Car i felt sorry that i Sold it out

I bought the car for a good price from a dear friend, and i resold it for a higher price then what i paid for, maybe 996TT value wont hold as good as 993 S, 996TT more comfortable, But style and i would say quality even you shut the doors of the 993 or 911 u will feel the differnce btw the both cars, 993 & 911 FUN to drive, if you are gona keep the car for couple yrs go for 993, and if you wanted speed, handling, & comfort go for the 996TT

Here a PIC of a car that i felt sorry i sold it out
