    Windshield suction cup damage?

I just bought a Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector and the owners manual says that the windshield suction cups may permanently damage the windshield because some Porsches have a protective film on the inside the windshield.

Has anyone used suction cups for their radar detector, etc? any damage? Do you think it's safe to use?

    Re: Windshield suction cup damage?

    huh? never a probelm here

    Re: Windshield suction cup damage?

Suction that sukker to the windshield. Porsches do _not_ have that notorious coating.

Tip: apply a thin film of lip balm to the cup to make it stick better and longer.

    Re: Windshield suction cup damage?

It's a good excuse if you want to return it after the 'test' period. Otherwise I have never seen an issue with suction cups.

    Re: Windshield suction cup damage?

I read somewhere that this was a problem in "older" Porsches which had a film on the front glass. This film is not on 997's, 996's or even 993's. I have not had any problems nor have I read anywhere of anyone having problems. Those with 993 or pre-993 era cars may have input.

The only problems I have seen though is those little suction cups will flatten, distort and lose their "suck" with time, so keep spares and a strong power cord handy.

Yeah..., think it over..., it's either an excellent tip or a catastrophic error.

Right! and a mess to clean. I think suction cups should be perfectly clean, grease free and they should be replaced periodically, say every 6 months.

Any "mess to clean" worry is making a "mountain out of a mole hill." Wipe glass with lip balm then clean it off with microfiber: done.

Get an electron microscope and look at lunar-esque surface of glass and silicone. BTW, I got a feeling the air molecules and atoms will be too small to see in same view.

We have a suction-cupped window accessory for kitchen window. Thing kept falling off window every week or so. Slapped on some lip balm and the thing has been stuck for more than a year.

    Go figure.

    Re: Windshield suction cup damage?

then I'm gonna put lip balm on my x-girlfriend and stick her to the windshield of a passing truck.
