    Asset appreciation

In EVO this month, they attempt to qualify what cars might go up in value from £4K up to £250K. Whilst I get that this is a worldwide forum - would anyone care to share views on what usable and fun asset might appreciate in value over the next 5 years? Not looking for investment advice, or retrospective appreciation stories - just what might be in the precipice of reasonable return.

    Re: Asset appreciation

In my opinion, cars and art should never be in "invested" in on a short term (5 years). It is almost impossible to predict the outcome/price development, especially in the price range you mentioned.

I'm no expert though, so maybe some people can provide a better perspective/analysis.

Also, if a car is valued at 100k, this doesn't really mean that you get 100k. It depends...how high the demand is, if a specific person wants to have that car and so on.

Look at stamps for example (I know, this is a bad example but anyway): They have huge value in catalogues but when you try to sell them, you can be happy if you get 10 cents on the dollar. Just saying.

Whatever you do you need to add maintenance costs to older cars. And they can be a lot.

    Re: Asset appreciation

Good pint about liquidity - this is very true for things like private number plates in the UK. I wasn't necessarily thinking purely of vehicles though - I guess watches spring to mind?

    Re: Asset appreciation

IMHO there are no fun appreciating assets.

Very few cars go up in value. And only older models that require specialty caring for.

Watches are very illiquid assets, and the dealer margins are so high, you cannot win.

Real estate: in the fun places, the market being very efficient, prices have already rebounded from the lows. Also real estate in general are very bad investments once you factor in maintenance and taxes. And if you actually want to use the place and thus decorate it and bring it up to specs you want, there is no money to be made.

In short, IMHO, the only way to make money with fun assets is to buy at distressed prices, which are now hard to come by...

Usable and fun with a moderate appreciation trend in the next 5 years  are in my opinion (staying with Porsche):

The1988-1989 G models 911s, Porsche 964 Carrera 2 , 993 2/4s and Turbos  . They can be bought with a budget from 30-35 K eur (964), 45-55 K eur (88-89' G model) , 60 - 70 K eur (993 2/4s) to 85-95 K eur (993 Turbo)  - referring always to cars in very good conditions.  Mileage is important but more is the condition , history and provenance. Those will very likely appreciate due their usability, enjoyment and by being relatively scarce (compared to modern Porsches production numbers) .  If properly maintained and serviced they will last "forever" .  I had few of them and I always regret letting them go but that`s another story. Not too demanding to service provided you have a good independent or a Porsche official service with a Classic certification.

If your budget allows you more then I would buy a 964 RS or 993 RS which in this case are truly investment grade cars as well as great fun (provided they are bought on condition). No other RS built after them (maybe with the exception of the GT3 RS 4.0) are investment grade.

    Best appreciating asset, wife.

From zero value to half your net worth right after marriage. During your married life, her value goes up every year as your net worth grows, and when you die, she takes the whole chunk.

The  E30 BMWs are slightly appreciating here because kids keep crashing them. It's already more expensive than the later 3er E36, which won`t ever be a collectors item as it was meant to be recycled. I hope that my dear E34 535i will be worth something to someone someday. They are dirt cheap right now.. and by that I mean under $1,000! For a good working car.

Smiley Actually, since I married, my net worth declined. Hint: She loves shopping. Smiley Thanks god she has her own practice, so she adds money to the family too but usually I have to pay for everything in the family, including her gifts and shopping and she pays for...some of her shopping. Smiley On the other hand, she is a wonderful wife and takes very good care of us three (me and kids), so I guess I shouldn't complaint.

That sounds more like a liability than an asset.
