Question for those who were in Geneva.....

So what were your thoughts before and after you finally saw the Turbo in the flesh?

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

i couldnt go but many friends did ,it looks so much better in the flesh ,but all of them told me that the real blast is the gt3...

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

Even in real, there is something that I don't like in the new front design!

But anyway, it's a really nice car...surely better in real than in photo!

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

I have just returned from the press days in Geneva and will post pictures and impressions today. First impression: if one expects a major design change, you will be disappointed (especially in a car show environment with other super exotics). If you respect Porsche's evolutionary engineering and design approach, you will be mightily impressed. Back with a fuller report today.

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

I also visited the press days in Geneva and saw the 911 Turbo in reality.

I can say that the new Turbo looks nice, but the difference to the old one is not big. It's an evolution.

For me as an owner of a 996 Turbo (450 PS,620 NM, 2002, 25'000km) it makes absolutly no sense to go for the new one. The differences in style and Power aren't big enough to invest around CHF 60-70k that would cost a switch. For less money I can upgrade my Turbo with a bigger wing and other things from Techart...

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

Well, I confess that I don't like the style of the new Turbo. The original design of the 997 has here lost its purity and and harmony. There are much too much appendices and openings of any kind that decorates all the perimeter of the car. In particular, the rims are incredibly ugly and reinforce the impression that the car is perforated everywhere, the led bars do not seem to belong to the car and the fog lights are just inspired by the Renault Mégane RS.

The car looks a bit less busy in black, a color which tends to hide the exhuberances of the body.

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

I saw it yesterday. It's much better than the photos especially in Basalt and the wheels are really great in the flesh. It is necessary a more complex and less cohesive shape than the the other 911's but certainly stands out a s a proper Porsche turbo.

But for me it was overshadowed by the stunning looking GT3 which drew the crowds (and me) like a magnet.

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

I was greatly disapointed when I saw the TT in flesh. the design of the car is not good at all and the new wheels are just crap, IMO. I changed my minde, I wont be getting the TT convertable. The GT3 on the other hand is a different story what a car, I love it.

Twenty years ago when I bought my first 911, , one's heart started pounding faster when one came upon a Turbo on the road , compared to a base Carrera .
Today, I'm feeling that "vibe" has been passed on to the GT3/GT3RS . The Turbo is still the " top " , to use Porsche's internal lingo , but I'm feeling more "fast GT" in the SL65 vein but with better dynamics/handling.Maybe it's because it's too easy to install an OEM 500-650 hp motor in ANYTHING now , from truck ( like Dodge Ram RT10 pick up ,Cayenne Turbo S ) to "minivan" ( MBZ R63 ) to wagon ( M5,E63,RS6.. ) , to innumerable sedans, coupes and sports cars.

I say yes to the GT3. Visually, dynamically its spirit is fun.

The Turbo is just too serious and looks to over fussy-busy. Its overweight and has too much mass that Porsche has cleverly engineered to hide.

    Fast, but no joy.

I'd bet most people's tastes in cars evolve over 20 yrs....as do their driving skills and risk tolerances....

I think it's great that today one can seriously contemplate using a trio like 997TT, 599 and CL65 as commuter cars (have a couple of colleagues who will be using this exact trio of cars for daily use in 2H06)...and esp use 997TT and 599 as wkend twisties cars...w/CL65 as ultimate mobile office for 280 blitzes btwn SF-SilicVy....and get GT3RS/FXX as wkend track cars if interested.....

Sure, lots of cars w/500hp+, but the number of cars w/power, useable mid-range torque, steering precision/feel, brakes, handling, all-weather traction, safety systems, etc in one package is kinda limited: it's still only the 997TT IMO

May feel more confident in 997TT's uniquely balanced excellence by driving it aggressively and extensively back-to-back vs alleged competitors (and given most dealers/pals won't let you drive their 599, etc hard on test drives (if test drives exist for hard-to-get cars), may want to acquire a couple of the alleged competitors short-term to do your due diligence).....you may amuse yourself in discovering the glaring dynamic weaknesses of many 500hp+ alleged competitors.... ....let the poseurs and dreamers endlessly debate styling nuances and 0-60MPH times of cars most will never buy (or drive).....

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

I'm glad I grew up in a time in the US ( in the 60s) when it was special to see a new XKE, Ferrari 275 , even a Sting Ray roar by. Porsche's 356 were odd bug/frog looking things with a funny raspy engine sound . MBZ's were driven by old men or " old maid " schoolmarms like my ancient algebra teacher. BMWs were little 1600s and later the " Bavaria ". Audis came on the scene in the early 70s with the farty little cars like the 100.Toyota's product line was basically the box that was called a Corolla.
Today's kids see all these mega cars from Asia , Europe and the US all lined up on every other trendy street corner in any US town with half a million people - it must be pretty mundane for them .
OTOH, here in Palo Alto , I have YET to see a single MBZ R-class on the road or parked six months after intro , LOL . What a dud - but that's what MBZ deserves for dumbing down the nice looking Vision GST into the lump that the production version became.I'm sure a town like ours was a high target - but instead, the Volvo XC90 is cleaning up here in that 7 seater category .

    so true...

Re: Question for those who were in Geneva.....

I liked the turbo but it had the wrong color (silver, should be red, yellow, blue or black) and the rims don't go with the silver they had.

The white GT3 next to it was stunning.

I reserve judgement on the turbo until I see a cab version in a nice color with XRR rims!
