    Autocar first drive: BMW M3 saloon

    No doubt about it, the M3 saloon is a stirring car to drive - a supercar-destroying four door, packing one of the world's most electrifying production engines and a wonderfully responsive rear-wheel drive chassis to match. From high speed grand touring to challenging back road flings, there are few cars on sale today capable of matching its mesmerising depth of performance.

    But despite the added practicality it brings to the experience, the saloon lacks the singularity of purpose exhibited by the M3 coupé, which for now remains our favourite.

    I don't like it when a car magazine can't get the facts right about a car they review, yet alone one as popular as the M3. For example, the interior in the saloon is the same as the one in the coupe, yet they say that the saloon has too much plastic compared to the coupe. They also talk about the 6 speed dual clutch gear box when it's a 7 speed.

    If you are going to write about cars be sure to know the car(s).

    1. Which "supercars" does it destroy?
    2. Theres nothing special about it's 400hp V8 - Ferrari did one of those yesteryear.
    3. There's plenty of cars around that price bracket that can give such "depth of performance".

    Why would BMW publish identical acceleration and Nurburgring lap times for the Coupe and Sedan? How do they justify the expense of that carbon fibre roof and the lesser practicality of a Coupe with less seating and luggage room? You would think they'd at least say the sedan is 0.1sec slower to 60 mph and 1 sec. slower at the Ring.

    Otherwise, why wouldn't everyone opt for the cheaper car with more room and two extra doors that's just as fast (straight line and track)? Looks alone?

    I hope they don't sell that thing in NA. It looks like a baby M5. The best thing BMW did was stop making 4-door M3's.

    Actually the 4-door E36 M3's are heavily sought-after for track use. They are stiffer and form the basis of a faster racecar.

    +1 to Grant and boytronic.

    They are cocking up the marketing for sure. It's good, but its not THAT good.

    The previous generation 4 door M3 was a truely amazing car, this one will simply be a copy of the coupe with 2 more doors so its easier to justify buying as a practical car.

    I believe it cannibalizes glory and prestige from the coupe for no good reason. Isn't the M5 supposed to be the 4 door M car?

    I'm sure when the 4 door 911 comes out (Panamera...) all 911 drivers will be slightly negatively impacted in terms of image. It is not a sign of a company becoming more practical or well rounded, it is about a company selling out from it's core principles.

    4 door cars are compromises and they compromise everything they are related to in the brand.
