    Post Warrenty Repair$: can you handle it?

    Gotta little squeek in my rear PASM strut which I gotta get checked out. Started me thinking about what this would cost me to replace struts in the years ahead after warrenty is gone. Seems like a guess of us$5000 would be cheap.

    My warrentied CD would have cost us$2500 to repair an I have this feeling Porsche might get on the Ferrari and Pharmaceutical Company bandwagon and start charging the pi** out of "captive-audience" owners for major parts in the future. A simple lawmover ignition part cost me us$130(?!) recently (made in mexico too!) so I think this "screw-the-owner" trend by manufacturers might get even more popular in the future.

    Should we just plan on a us$25,000 repair budget to keep these cars rolling for ten years?

    Seems a wasteful shame to have to dump (more likely: trade in) a perfectly good car a month before the warrenty expires.

    I'm not confident that even an extended warrenty would suffice seeing that the warrenty company has to stay in business and make money and THAT might be tough with Ferrari-scaled Porsche repair costs.

    Anybody thought about this or know something?

    i have an extended warranty that will be my a few years....i think they're worth it, but many on here will disagree.

    either way, i paid about $2500 which will get me about 2 or 3 more years....in addition, i gets me a tire & wheel warranty. to me, easily worth it

    Non-PASM suspension has at least 2 advantages:

    1. Can swap for coilovers without the computers freaking out.

    2. Can replace them inexpensively when worn out.

    agreed. but by that standard wouldn't a honda accord also be cheaper? :-)

    Yes, it might even be cheaper than buying new PASM shocks

    But seriously, coilovers are better than PASM for some applications (i.e. trackdays) and that is not an option if you start with PASM...

    to be honest i couldn't comment on that. i know there are many different view points on non-pasm vs. pasm, and whereas i have plenty of track experience, i don't have too much with P-cars....so i couldn't tell ya

    i do know that in general, the reliability of an active suspension is lower than that of a non-active usually.

    i also know that on all the cars i've raced before, which have mostly come with in-bound springs, i've replaced them with coilovers.... :-)

    Well, Grant, don't know about the cost of replacing dampers, but if you were to get a 997 GT3 you could have PASM and coilovers!

    That is true, however, I suspect that some more serious track rats would prefer to substitute something like Moton or Ohlins external cannister adjustable shocks. There you can adjust Nitrogen pressure, as well as independent high and low-speed compression and rebound rates. Unfortunately, I don't think you can retrofit that stuff without confusing the onboard computers...

    I agree with MMD's general thesis and for that reason will never own another P Car out of warranty. I did that once and it was not a good experience (and that was in the old days). I also purchased an extended warranty for something like $2,000 because that seemed like the sensible thing to do. Of course, when the car broke and I went to collect on the warranty, the warranty company (Fireman's Fund) claimed that the specific failure was not covered by the warranty. But if the car broke in a slightly different way, then it would be covered. What a bunch of crap. I got in a pissing contest with them and it got me nowhere.

    My advice to you all is to stear clear of both P Cars out of warranty and extended warranties. I have a buddy who owns a 993 that needs about $8K of repairs right now. I told him to sell the car and start over.

    It comes down to:
    What will you replace your P with?
    If it is a much cheaper car (ie: honda, entry level BMW), then it would make sense to sell it.

    If it is another P, then you will be paying a lot more per year for a new car then you will for repairs of your "old" car. However, you will have a newer car. - and one wonders if you should have just leased in the first place??

    Many PASM-equipped cars have aftermarket coilovers. The dealership can simply reflash the ECU to keep it from "freaking out."
