    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

No comments. It's going to be THE best modern classic.

BMW pledged to provide ALL parts for 50 years..

It beat the F360 in 2003 in handling, acceleration and braking. It has the beautiful BMW E39 M5 engine series S62 making 400HP.

It looks way better than the SL and will be timeless, it already it.

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

I've always liked this bmw a lot. imo its the kind of car that will always be a classic and always be desireable. that said its also the kind of car that only a real car enthusiast can appreciate, i don't think the general audience does. in fact im pretty sure most bmw owners don't even know it exists.

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

haha its so temping. I love the simple design, referencing to the beautiful 507. It just has a BMW badge and doesn't even say Z8 anywhere... It must be quite the head turner where ever it goes because as you say, it is not very known, apart from being in the James Bond movie.

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

Thanks so much for the link Smiley

My wife bought a 2001 Z8 this summer with just over 1,000 miles of use.  It's the Bond color scheme of silver body with black top and interior.  It joins her '72 3.0 CSi (listed below) in the garage.

We "updated" it with Alpina springs and dampers, Dinan caster plates, the factory "performance package" suspension reinforcements, and tossed out the run-flat tires for Michelin Pilot Sport 2s.

    It's simply marvelous.

I'm in love with the Z8, my neighbour next door has one in black. If it wasnt because of him, I would see one every 10 years , its probably more easy to see an FXX on the roads rather than a Z8 ! ....

In my opinion its a beautiful car, but I'm sure BMW regrets in some way the launch of this car, or the approach they did to the market,  it was toooo expensive back in the day....

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

True it was and still is pretty pricy. Currently they go for $125,000 around here if you can find one. We had one in our BMW showroom for sale for over a year. Finally it had a SOLD sticker on it but was still displayed. I spoke to the manager about the sale, and he admitted he bought it himself

Disagree! The Z8 was always a crap of a car power wise and handling wise! So I would never say it was the the best modern classic. It might be an interesting shape and design but nevertheless, the car handles and performs crappy!

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

Didn't the Z8 have the same engine as the BMW M5 of that time? 5.4 litre V8 400bhp?

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

Yep - it was the same engine AFAIK. But - the handling of the Z8 wasn't sportscar like. Couldnt competet at all with any other sporty cars of that time. My uncle owns one and I drove it many times - the car is crap!

    check this:

and this car should behave even better as it is an "Alpina"

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

Actually its a 4.9l V8. I know the engine well , definitely not the weakness of this car. Never having driven one I can't comment on the handling.

I just said it will be the best modern classic. Try finding parts for a F360 in 50 years time... Also yes, the engine is the 32valve M5 one which perhaps is slow to some, but i think it's quite enough. It handles and performs crappy as compared to what? a 2011 F458 Smiley

I love it, probably cause it see it as the PERFECT West coast cruiser... which is even what JC concluded in his sketch. Obviously only crazy people would track this thing....

I think this nails it - the car is a cruiser and not a sports car! Smiley

So you do it like Nick and declare that the car was bought by your wife... Smiley

Just kidding, you have a fantastic line-up in your garage. May I ask what significantly transformed the handling in your opinion? Did you use the EU or US spec Alpina suspension?

The car was priced similiar to the 993 Turbo back then, I had a long chat with the responsible sales manager at the local dealership back then. He pointed out the exclusivity compared to Porsche and I am fairly certain that this was part of BMW´s sales communique.

BMW incorporated some technological highlights on this car that certainly did not make them earn too much money with it. Apart from the aluminium chassis, it must be the only car with neon indicator lights at front and rear. Quite tricky to incorporate...

By the way, very nice pdf-file from the BMW Z8 club.

    Re: 1135 Quality Z8 Shtos

Ferdie:   May I ask what significantly transformed the handling in your opinion? Did you use the EU or US spec Alpina suspension?

It was probably all of them taken together.

We used the EU-spec Alpina springs and dampers and I suspect they provided the majority of the improvement.  This can be intuited from old US magazine road tests where the Alpina version was thought to handle better from back-to-back testing with a standard Z8.  The Alpina progressive-rate springs have more variability in their rate than do the standard springs.  The front Alpina USA springs were actually the USA Z8 springs due to headlight and bumper height regulations, thus necessitating the EU-spec conversion.  All the Alpina vehicles I have ever driven seem to steer with more precision and handle better than their donor vehicles.

The Dinan caster plates add more self-centering to the steering feel and make the car track subjectively truer as one goes down the road.

The Michelin PS2's are a world apart from the OEM run-flat tires, which felt like they were made from concrete.

    Cheers,

Thanks for your explanation, Mike. I follow your opinion on suspension and tires...
