Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

The Carerra S wheels: Okay okay, I don;t just want to jump in and hate them, but without having seen in person them I'm looking to order the car _without_ them.

Is there something I'm missing? What is the general opinion on these wheels? What were the designers thinking when they decided on them? Is there some precedent for them in Porsche's history?

I see the "same" wheel design on the Ford Escape! No kidding: the same square notches where spoke meets rim!

Somebody help me feel better about these wheels!

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

If it makes you feel any better it resembles the Lambo. wheels.

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

thanks Ron, nice comp. Maybe this is hinting at a new direction in wheel design. Insted of modifying each individual spoke there's more complex, overlapping patterns to come?

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

Hey believe me, those wheels of the "S"model are just amazing.
In my opinion those wheels are stunning, probably could be its size, but definately the design is excellent too.
Soon I'll post photos of my 997S, and I'll focus some photos to the wheels from different angles.

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

These S wheels are looking 100% better in real life than on pictures!

BUT - for me the new Sportline Trims would be the choice!

    saab designer is coming .....

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

Although I suppose I should reserve judgment until I see them in the flesh, I think the standard Carrera S wheels are ugly with a capital U. Too busy, too many holes. By contrast, the Murci roadster wheels, while a little too busy for my taste, are beautiful.

After seeing that Lambo wheel I suddenly feel so much better about the 997S wheel!

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

    poursha,

I have seen them in real life myself and while large sizes like 19" can work miracles, this is a hopeless case
They are still butt ugly. Well, not exactly ugly, they are not ugly by themselves, they would work on a SUV for example, but in a sportcar they look outdated in a sense that both their spokes and center hub are very wide which make them look clunky and heavy. Like the wheels of 80's sportcars that were so small in diameter that the spokes were short and wide. Then they removed ALL sharp edges or sharp angles that would make it look a bit more aggresive or sporty, and finished it all off with 10 large holes that along the 5 other wheel nut holes make it look overly busy. I think they tried too hard to make a "different" wheel and pissed out of the pot.
The steering wheel however looks better in person than in the pics.

    ...

I think the wheels are stunning also. The remind me of the Fuchs wheels on the earlier 911s.

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

I initially thought there were too many holes in the wheels, but they have grown on me. They look good at speed to if the magazine pictures are anything to go by.

Re: Can somebody explain the look of the S wheels?

They just take getting used to,and i beleive as others have said, that they will look great in the metal,i think you should order them after all its one of few distinguishing features from the base carerra
