    Tiptronic S Program Remapping

The new boxster with 3.4L is said to have some remapping to its tip s gearbox. Would the software be upgraded for improved response on my 987s 2006 3.2L. This is a question for tip s owners only.

Finally, I have yet to reach 5000 km yet so I had not redlined or went past 5500 rpm. However, a few tip s owners did mention that the system will adjust according to your driving habits and if you drive more leisurely it responses accordingly and if you are more aggressive, it becomes more responsive. Hence, it has some learning to the system. I wasn't aware of this feature but does anyone know from first hand experience.

In any case, contributors did tell me to rev up the engine a bit every morning and the response would improve over time. Ideas? Inputs?

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

For what it's worth, 5000km is uneccessary, the owners manual states 2000KM.

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

I was told by experienced Porsche Sales manager(more than 20 years experience) there is no need to baby it after 3000kms. Opinions vary on this board, but 2000miles or 3000kms seems to be the number of K's for run-in.

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

i have already gone past 6000 once.. couldnt resist... since then i have been trying to keep it 2000rpm but it would end up to around 4000rpm

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

what about the possibility of remapping like the 2007 987s? In the press release, it mentions:

The Boxster and Boxster S can be supplied with the revised Tiptronic S transmission, which has new hydraulics and electronics as well as variable shift programs. When combined with the Sport Chrono Package, the sporty characteristics of both these mid-engine roadsters can be experienced even more intensely: up- and downshifts are made only at engine speeds above 3000 rpm; downshifts for engine braking are subject to less delay and take place at higher engine speeds. In the manual-shift mode, up-shifts are not made automatically when the engine reaches its maximum rev limit. "

I supposed since I do not have the new engine, a new program simply wouldn't do it no?

Ptcja, are you mostly driving your tip on manual mode or on auto? If you're driving mostly on manual mode I can't see how a re-mapping of the tip-s can improve the performance unless the shift is quicker. I used to drive my Box on manual mode always and when accelerating hard it would even shift by itself at red-line. From the sounds of it the next 987's will not upshift even at red-line, which I guess would prove to be useful mostly during track racing eg tight corners in 1st gear.

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

Any of you guys driven the Cayman S? It does exactly what the 2007 Boxster will do. The shift is way more aggressive than the 987S - I drove one very very hard the other day - very different animal to the 987.

The automode is not very good for the car at all..... The porsche manual says you shouldn't lug the engine and you will find if it is in auto when driving in congested city centres the rev's will fall lower than 2000 frequently - even lower sometimes. Porsches should always stay above 2000 - I usually sit around 3,000 and have never had a single problem in the 34 cars I had the pleasure of : )

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

The shift pattern will have been altered to coincide with the different power crves of the 3.4 engine - it may also have bene modded to make it a bit more agrresive if sport chrono option isn't specified.

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

mostly auto mode I do really... nonetheless, the tip s is always sluggish and at max can only be said as ADEQUATE for the 280 hp engine. The Cayman S' tip was a lot more aggressive but it could also only be called at max a bit more than Adequate. I bet they can't compare to the DSG auto mode of a VW GTi or steptronic of AUDI TT (new)

In city driving I do nothing more than the auto mode but from reading the owner's manual, auto mode without rocker buttons means you have to control the upshift and downshift by pressing full throttle position (flooring it) for kickdown or 80% of it or using pressure on braking and accelerating to shift. However, no matter how hard I floor it, I find that (for e.g, going up a bridge or needing to rev and go faster) there is a big lag and lots of hesitation in the program. However, on the rare occasions on using manual forcing kickdown in gear 1 or 2, it can maintain a much higher rev with better engine sound and better use of the engine's potential. Hence, my observation is that it is much better to drive around all the time using manual if you want better response. The auto mode can never predict or shift fast enough. Most important, it is definitely the case that the Rev Range if driving fully automatic is always kept below 2000 - 2500 in city driving.

    Re: Tiptronic S Program Remapping

Ptcja, I too found it frustrating driving my tip in auto mode, and as you said it may not downshift even when flooring it say, from 5th gear. So I learnt to drive it on manual mode all the time, often downshifted 2 gears for quick accelaration eg. overtaking a truck on a freeway. I also test drove a 987S tip previously and found auto mode similarly slow in up and downshifts and once got beat by a 6 cl Camry cos the Boxster automatically took off in 2nd. Had I took off in 1st in manual mode it would have been different.
