    Re: BMW M5 Crash

Well, this isn’t the whole story. I heard already yesterday about.  The 63-year-old driver was accompanied of his two sons, with an M6 and M5. (Previous model). Good to see on the 3rd pic from top. They drove rather at high speed. Was it a „race“? This will remain in the dark....yes

Anyway, it was a blessing in disguise for the unfortunate driver, as his sons as first responders freed him from the wreck.

In the engine bay arose smoke, which was smothered by one of the sons with a fire extinguisher. After all, the M5 seems to be more stable than I supposed. Hope the driver is still alive.

    He is very lucky!!!!

    Re: BMW M5 Crash

He is very lucky that the crash wasn't that bad. Yes high speed, but he bounced off the rails and then flipped a couple of times in the grass which is more than soft compared to suddenly coming to rest against a bridge post of concrete wall. Modern cars are pretty damn safe, the Autobahn is safe too and combined death was avoided here. He's lucky his kids saved him probably very quickly, otherwise the burning inferno becomes the post-crash death trap.

    Re: BMW M5 Crash

He was lucky that he hit the divider first, which took off some substantial amount of speed from the car. The bouncing and flipping also reduced speed again, luckily. If he would have hit another car at that speed, he would have been dead. I'm always very cautious when driving at top speed on the Autobahn and I always have my headlights turned on, something which many high performance cars drivers tend to forget to do.

I also never pass other cars at 300 kph or so when there are more than two cars on the right. There is too much of a risk that someone may start changing the lane.

High speed driving is a risk but a risk you can control if you respect certain rules.

So what was the reason for the crash? Really lucky to get out alive since the roof has moved inwards substantially...

A driver apparently changed lane in front of him and he (M5 driver) panicked.

Maybe he did not have the SportAuto test brake pads installed Smiley Seriously, driving very fast in a sedan that heavy is much more risky than doing the same with a sportscar. The weight and also the suspension setup is a major risk in extreme situations.

    Re: BMW M5 Crash

I agree with RC, doing such speeds only with very little traffic and good conditions. Risks are just too big.

Thanks. I luckily never had to make a langechange manouvre at 180 mph but, assuming that ESP was engaged, such a spin must've caused by physical contact with another car or the guard rail, shouldn't it?

    Re: BMW M5 Crash

ESP still have to operate within the laws of physics, if the steering input is big and sudden enough, no amount of electronics can save the car.

Well the weather has been pretty crap with rains and drizzles these last few days as well, and temperatures pretty low.

In fact you can see how wet the mud is in the photos.. Could have had something to do with it

Like the report said...the driver panicked because of a car changing the lane in front of him. It happens pretty often on the Autobahn, even when I drive with active front lights. People apparently can't really appreciate distances and speeds and others are just plain stupid and they do it by purpose. It happened to me twice that I was driving aprox. 260 kph or over and a guy in front of me changed his lane to mine and forced me to drive behind him for a couple of km at a speed of under 160 kph for no reason. These people just don't realize what could happen if someone approaching with 300 kph from behind, would hit them in the rear, it would be a disaster for both.

Last week i have drive to the north of germany (weener) and i see many kilometers of autobahn without the draining asphalt. this may also have influenced the crash?
