    997 v 997S

    This has probably been discussed already but what are your views of how much better the 997S is compared to the 997? Would you say it is like comparing the 996 3.6 to the 3.4 or are the differences greater than that? Hope there are others out there going through similar a similar decision process as me - on paper the 997S is so much more desirable of course but there must be reasons why porsche produced the 997....

    Also, for those that have driven both S and non-S versions - do they sound noticeably different?

    This cars have complete different power-delivery.

    The 997 come in low turns, very similar to the 3.4. On higher torque - nothing special happen. The 997S is different, this car feels more weak than the 997 in low turns, but between 5000 and higher, the car feels and sounds like a rocket.

    I have testdriven the S and was a little disappointed. Yes - its a explosive fun on higher turns, but on a daily use (city, country roads) you normaly switch early and don't push the car that hard. The S is made for a very active and sporty driving. Always on high turns, late shifting - like you drive on the race-track!

    So - testdrive both before you take a decision,

    thanks L@rs that's good to know. Will definitely test both. Is the S really weaker in the low RPM range or does it just feel that way because the high RPM is so stunning? Would you say for high speed cruising the S is not necessarily better than the non-S?

    Hi Lars
    Well, you drive a light 330D everyday that makes much more torque than the S, and your 345 Hp 996, compared to the 355Hp powered S, wont loose that much in any power range, so I'm not surprise for your disappoitment after the S test drive.

    I agree with Lars. I bought the 997 not the 997S because I want to use the car as a daily driver and the 997 seems to be more suitable for this task.

    Buy the 997S if you go often to a track.
    Buy the 997 if you drive your car each day.

    Just my opinion.

    Actually here in the U.S., where you're forced to have PASM on the S, the 'regular' 997 would be the track car of choice.

    I too intend to use the car everyday so such considerations are foremost on my mind ... are you saying the 997 has more useable torque than the 997S, or is it just that most of the 997S's abilities are realistically not going to be used in a daily driver hence it's in a sense a bit wasted/unnecessary?

    Saw the pictures of your car in an earlier post - BEAUTIFUL! are you enjoying your 997?
