    Porsche Vehicle Tracking System

Using the Porsche GB car configurator I found that this was added automatically as part of the UK spec for a 997TT which adds Pounds1,917 on to the base price of Pounds95,923 (this figure also includes sunroof and top tinted windscreen). I suspect its an adaptation of a Navtrak or Tracker system for Porsche vehicles. I wonder if they will charge another Poundsxx to switch it on as they do with the Navigation system on the PCM! . Below is an extract from the Porsche e mail newsletter that came out today:

The Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) is now available for your Porsche as part of the Porsche Tequipment range.

The system features automatic driver recognition and theft detection throughout Europe 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. It achieves this through use of an Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR) card, which you hold separately to your car keys. So if your car moves without your ADR being present you will know about it whether you are at home or abroad in Europe.

Specifically developed for Porsche, it is the only system tested and approved by Porsche following achievement of the Thatcham Category 5 standard.

Many insurance companies are now insisting that Porsche vehicles are fitted with a Thatcham approved tracking system. Porsche is the first vehicle manufacturer to offer vehicle tracking which is Thatcham CAT5 approved and has achieved the accolade of being the only vehicle tracking product, so far, to be successfully audited by the Association of Chief Police Officers.

For further information about the Porsche VTS or to have the system installed in your vehicle, please contact your nearest Porsche Centre.

    Re: Porsche Vehicle Tracking System

The "problem" with such tracking systems is easy to detect: a factory installed system will always be installed the same way, with the same parts, at the same location.
Unless Porsche plans to seal this system with a titanium/carbon shell and a self-destruct system , I think that sooner or later it will be pretty much useless because professional car thieves will soon find a way to get around it or to deactivate it.
This is why I don't believe in factory installed systems, unless they're really COMPLETELY INTEGRATED into the car's network and can't be deactivated or fooled around with.
And since a retrofit is possible (or even necessary), I don't think that this system is really safe on a longterm run. It may help with amateur car thieves but it shouldn't help against professionals I'm afraid.

    Re: Porsche Vehicle Tracking System

AFAIK this is a dealer fit option and not factory fitted.

With my current car, my local BMW dealer fitted a tracking device and informed me that they have 3-4 different locations where they can install it so, at least in the case of my current car, the device may not be in the same place as for another vehicle.

    Re: Porsche Vehicle Tracking System

Its a rather expensive option to if I remember correctly. 1500EUR or something. The normal insurance for the car is good enough I think. Who want to get the car in return after a scumbag have driven the car like a maniac towards the russian border? ... The only reason for having this system would probably be for helping the police with busting thiefs. For me I would not have anything against specing up a new car for the insurance-money

I don't know about Sweden but over here in Germany, you usually get the first 6 months of ownership a new car, after that only the market value at the time of the theft. And trust me...you'll loose a lot. Furthermore, you also have to take in consideration the waiting time before the insurance actually pays (30 days in Germany, if the car shows up later, it is the property of the insurance company) and of course the waiting time when you order a new car. Especially regarding the 997 Turbo, ordering a new one could involve a few months of waiting time, even longer in the first year of production.
So as "bad" as a factory build vehicle tracking system seems to be, it is better than nothing.

    Re: Porsche Vehicle Tracking System

You're probably right on the target regarding the insurance companies and that the payout when the theft is a fact will be rather low compared to what you have to pay for a similar new car. I was a bit ironic in my post and of course this option will probably be useful when the the theft is reality...

I would just imagine the big-brother effects by installing this... Soon it will be possible to see your friends position in the PCM-screen when driving.. .Or perhaps see all other Porsches nearby similar to the fixed POI's for official Porsche dealers nearby ... And why not connect this to the rennteam account and reply to posts via PCM-phone.... ok... time to stop now
