    997 GT3 Good News!

Today i heard from a truthful source that the next GT3 (997) will get a "similar" engine to the GT1 derivates.
Well whatever "it" meant by similar, but the most important thing is "it" confirmed that the engine will have a dry sump and it will get A LOT more power. How much this a lot more means i can't tell for sure.

About an rs version and the 997 gt3's weight i got no concrete anwser...

    Very Clear!

I would love to get a definition of "similar" from your truthful source. It has pistons? Check! It has valves? Check! It's a flat-6? Check! Oh well I guess that's it then!

    So much for useful information...

    Re: Very Clear!

That is great news! Wonder if it will be a 3.8L dry sump motor (like 993RS or 964RSR)?

    Re: Very Clear!

    Thanks for the news!

    Re: Very Clear!

Dario, its amazing, you're always superquick when it comes to read news on GT3 - wonder why??

    cheers

PS: will be at lago maggiore this weekend, are you going to be around?? if yes, lets PM

    Re: Very Clear!

Turbolite i let you know something for the week end..

And for the Gt3 news..can't sleep to know more..

I check way too often, people around me think I'm nuts.

    Re: Very Clear!

    Le chef,

i dont want the source to get trouble because of what i write here...but...
just suppose the source was a he and he replied to my question: will the 997 engine be a Gt1 derivate like the 996 gt3 engine?
He just smiled and said, similar. Sorry more he didn't want to tell me about it.

But the most important thing for sure is that he said: it will be dry sump and have a lot more power!!!

    Let's wait and see

    Re: Very Clear!

A lot more power for Porsche is 15-20hp. The GT3 is going to need more than that, or either much less weight, to compete with today's crop of insane performance bargains (i.e., the new Z06).

Yeah, it will weigh at least as much and have 100hp less than the Z06...

    Re: Very Clear!

Yes, that will be a problem for the GT3, which is Porsche's track-focused car. I seem to remember an NSX with an incredible time around the ring, besting many more powerful cars.

I know the Z06 will have the chassis and suspension befitting its race heritage; however, I can't imagine the dynamics of the car will best the GT3. Yet, if the GT3 is a marginally better handling vehicle, it still will not make up a 100hp difference. Porsche needs to make a 2500-2600 lb car to compete with the power it offers. I guess only the turbo will offer performance near that of the Z06. I'm guessing AWD is got to offset some of the extra weight of the turbo.

    Re: Very Clear!

The Turbo will be much too heavy to compete with the Z06 at the track - it will weigh around 3,700 lbs and AWD is a detriment at the track (unless it's raining).

    Re: Very Clear!

AFAIR Autobild stated a time of 7:56min for one lap on the Nordschleife for the C6 Z06.
If that time is correct, a 996 GT3 mk.II (7:54min) should already be sufficient...

Eliot, that 7:56 time for the Z06 was for the C5 version which had 100hp less and much less refined brakes, suspension, tranny, etc...

    Re: Very Clear!

Hm... OK, I'll have a second look at the magazine tomorrow, thought it was the C6!
    It was a recent issue.
    cu later!

I'm certain that the C5 did 7:56 and that the new C6Z has not yet posted a time. It is due to be made public any time now (people are anxiously waiting to hear what it can do). Most people think it will be 7:4x.xx

    Re: Very Clear!

With all the hype, if this new Vette doesn't equal the 7:32 of the Carrera GT it will be a little disappointing. One of my driving instructors at the PDE very seriously intimated that the new Vette would best the CGT and the Enzo. I'm still thinking a turbo 911 is going to be competitive -- ok, maybe a 997 derived GT2.

I disagree. I think most people are amazed by a $65k chevy that will equal or best the $180k 996 GT2 or the Ferrari 430. The CGT and Enzo are in the realm of hyper exotics and are much more advanced than the Z06 is. The Chevy has nothing to prove against those half million dollar cars. A low 7:4x ring time would be extremely respectable. If it simply breaks 7:40, that's amazing. Didn't the CGT get a 7:28? If the vette cost $200k and had 700 hp, then it should be the CGT, not at $65k and 500 hp.

I guess if I get one I'll have to eventually put a race suspension on it, a cup car aerodynamics package, and a weight reduction plan in the spirit of your carbon fiber RS masterpiece. Then Z06s can eat my dust.

    Re: Very Clear!

Oh, I'm amazed and impressed by it alright. Maybe I'm being a bit rhetorical and indirect, but what I'm simply suggesting is that the hype has been tremendous. It's hard for any car to live up to that, no matter how good it is, and how good a value it is.

3700lbs. That's chunky! Murcielago chunky! Source?

    Re: Very Clear!

I don't have a definitive source - just rumors that it will gain at least 50kg (110 lbs). The current car weighs close to 3,600 lbs in street trim...

    Re: Very Clear!

German "Auto-Bild" from today. Corvette Z 06 Nürburgring Time: 7.40 min. The driver was Jan Magnussen. No danger for the CGT's time.

    Re: Very Clear!

    absolute monster time!!! chapeau Covette!!

It is highly unikely that the new turbo will be slower on the NS. The Corvette is an attractive offer at its price. But its not a true competitor for a Porsche turbo.

Well, if the time were indeed 7:40 I would have to correct myself. However, this 7:40 time seems more of a rumour than a fact...

    Re: Very Clear!

I doubt the TT will be able to do 7.40, to heavy. so for $70000 the z06 is fantastic value and a serious alternative to at leat a Cayman RS if not to the new GT3.

It depends how you look at it MKSGR,
From a performance point of view, it will most definitely be a competitor of the Turbo.
And from a marketing point of view, it is more than ever a competitor of the Turbo, the car market today is so versatile, I mean, even for a specific type of clientele, the upcoming M5 Touring will be a competitor to the Turbo (the family man who wants a fast autobahn cruiser)
It's farfetch but I hope you see what I mean, it all depends what you want to do with the car.

Turbo will be as usual, the best package, but now, ask yourself, if you lived in the States,
    A 997 Turbo full of options or a nice Boxster S AND a Z06?
    Humm....
