Tiptronic 2.0: Porsche Working on 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox
    Date posted: 07-26-2006

ZUFFENHAUSEN, Germany - A series of patent applications filed by Porsche hints the German carmaker is planning to replace its existing 5-speed Tiptronic gearbox with a new 7-speed double-clutch gearbox in the Boxster, Cayman and 911.

It was originally intended to be launched on the recently introduced 911 Turbo, but delays in the development of the new gearbox now mean it is unlikely to appear until the face-lifted version of the current 997-series 911 is unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year.

Although remaining tight-lipped on when the new gearbox will be introduced, Porsche's head of R&D, Wolfgang Durheimer, describes the double-clutch system as a significant breakthrough. "It will take us to the next performance plane, particularly in terms of acceleration," he told Inside Line.

Porsche is planning to offer the 7-speed unit as an option alongside its standard 6-speed manual gearbox. The existing 5-speed Tiptronic is expected to be dropped, since the new gearbox will have both manual and automatic shift modes.

Porsche isn't the only carmaker planning to introduce a 7-speed double-clutch gearbox. Volkswagen is working on a similar system, albeit for transverse engine applications, as the next step up from its existing 6-speed DSG unit; it could be used on future Polo, Golf, and Passat models. And Audi is using the same technology to develop such a gearbox for longitudinal engine layouts.

What this means to you: Porsche is taking its time sorting its new double-clutch gearbox, but you can be sure that when it arrives, it will give its cars a major boost in performance.

Based on the water venue backdropped by vegetation-deprived rollers, I'm guessing New Mexico, Arizona, or So. Cal.

Ah yes, just over the border from northwest Arizona, and just east of Vegas.

    RC, don't gamble too much.

    Re: 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox

Enjoying the weather RC? Did you get the 110-115F temps that we have been having recently or did you make it during the 'monsoon' season where is is now humid and only 100F . Hope you made it to the giant hole in the ground.

    Re: 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox

We enjoyed Las Vegas a lot, very warm, in the 110s to 120s and it wasn't too humid (aprox. 50-60% humidity).
Lake Mead was real fun, we just had rough water on one day due to strong winds (very refreshing) and had to return to the Marina because it got to dangerous with the kids.
Definetely a spot where we would love to live.

    Re: 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox

I will be flying there tomorrow, I hope it's nice!

    Re: 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox

    RC,

We went thru LV 2 weeks ago and it was 121, too hot to go outside. We came in from Cal where it was 118, also too hot to be outside. Now wew are in Santa Fe and it's in the 60's....cool for us Floriaians but better than the 120's. Nice mountain roads here in New Mexico, but as usual I'm driving a Yukon...yuck!!! A few years back we were in Montana on the "American Autobaun" and I was driving a minivan..story of my life. Someone wrote a song about me and it goes "must have been in the right place with the wrong car, wrong place with the right car".

    Re: 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox

Before i got my 360cs, i either test drove or caught a ride with the list below:
    1) 996 X50 with tiptronic and six-speed
    2) gt3 cup car with sequential trans
    3) 360cs and f430 with f1 trans
    4) bmw smg for m3 and m5

Bear in mind that prior to this, i was always a six-speed manual transmission kinda guy. But i fell in love with the F1 Race Mode in the stradale and just had to pick one up. That said, IMO, i hated the porsche tiptronic but loved the gt3 sequential and thought to myself that if porsche could get the gt3 sequential to work in a street porsche, that would be great. My point is this: Ferrari's F1 trans and Porsche's sequential trans are light years ahead of the tiptronics, hence porsche really needed to deliver on this DSG. That said, if they do, it will make the DSG porsche much much better. If the porsche DSG is just even half as good as a gt3 cup sequential or ferrari's f1 trans, it will be awesome. For those contemplating a porsche tiptronic, i highly suggest you catch a ride or test drive option 2) or 3) above and see for yourself what a proper race transmission is all about. When the DSG comes out and if it is even just half as good as ferrari's f1, rest assured porsche's tiptronic will be obsolete(we don't see porsche racing tiptronics now anywhere, now do we?). I don't mean to be harsh, but for those contemplating a tiptronic now, you need to understand what you will be getting into. I know what i say here might offend a lot of tip guys, but for those who are still on the fence, please, for your own sake and your wallet's, test drive option 2) or 3) before wiring your money.

couldn't agree more and would like to add one suggestion. Instead of trying the exotic cars above just get a drive in a golf vr32 or audi 3.2 with DSG. because that runs much smoother than an SMG and is very close in feeling to what the PDK will be (being exactly the same technology). You will be blown away by how smooth the gearchanges will takes place! no interruption of pull, that's just amazing!!

first time i drove it and then got back in my manual 996tt i felt the gearshift and the timeloss at each shift made it feel like relict of the early days of motoring..

    Re: 7-Speed Double-Clutch Gearbox

In his short interview in the British GT magazine, Herr Rohrl says "In two years, the Tiptronic will be replaced by the new six-speed double-clutch gearbox." But I can't wait two years! So maybe I lease the Tip now...
