Re: The 960 will be 10 years too late

Guys thanks for all the good posts, but I've thought about this a lot. A 991.2 GT3 w manual is the only 911 I would consider, but honestly I'm just not interested in rear engine handling characteristics.

Ive got a few things I would rather do:

Complete a Clos de Goisses vertical starting with 1996.

Find the right Lange Zeitwerk, maybe one of the 2012 Luminous ones.

Get my house furnished exactly the way I want. I'm about to order some Walter Knoll 375 bar stools. My team 7 flaye table and aye chairs will arrive in May. Minotti lounge Seymour for the living and maybe a Georgetti Arabella as an occasional piece in the master bedroom.

Have Robert Lang make me some more origami pieces.

And I've got one or two more really difficult ones, but I need to see if they're even feasible...

But I genuinely appreciate everyone taking the time to reply. Rennteam is really like nowhere else.

Ever driven a 991 GT3? It's surprising how mid-engined they feel now. Quite different from previous generations..

Dave I haven't; the .2 GT3 looks like a great car both by specs and photos. But it would be difficult to use as a DD and I won't compromise about layout - midengine for me please.

The GT3 doesn't really feel like a mid-engined car but it feels very nimble and it provides an amazingly direct drive feel, especially the GT3 RS. Still feels like a RWD 911 though in my opinion. Smiley

The problem with modern cars, like the R8 for example, is the fact that there is a basic setup (chassis, steering, AWD, etc.) and then the manufacturer comes and slaps various driving programs on it. I can basically program my R8 in a way to make it extremely neutral, up to a point where I can do crazy stuff even on public roads without the car behaving unpredictable. Try that with a GT3... Smiley Then, I can switch the AWD to a RWD setup and the rear comes as much as on a GT3. I have to admit that I love these many different setups but they actually make the car more difficult to drive because in every single mode, you actually get a different driving behavior, probably the reason Chris Harris felt annoyed by these driving modes in the R8. You need weeks, if not months to experience all the different modes and adapt. in the GT3, you can basically turn to Sport mode and turn off ESP. Not very much to choose from and this makes the car highly predictable because the basic character doesn't change. Have you ever turned off ESP in the R8 and switched to Performance mode DRY? Good luck with that, the car behaves like a wild bull and not necessarily in a positive way. Probably the reason why in some reviews, the R8 gets thumbs up and in others it doesn't. The R8 is very sensitive to driving modes and ESP setups, which can be a problem when the "wrong" one is chosen for that particular driving.

Maybe this is actually the problem of the R8: It can turn from a racer to a comfort ride and vice versa and depending on the mode you're driving in, you get a certain impression of the car. During test drives, people usually don't have the time or the nerve to try the various setups, so they usually end up in Comfort or Auto mode.

I know...this is an issue in my opinion but many competitors are not much different. Lots of settings as well.

Another problem is that the car's manual doesn't help...at all. I had to get myself a technical handbook for internal use only to get a better glimpse of the functions. Really dumb. Smiley

Well, both have the Audi rings... indecision

Everyone interested in the R8, I suggest trying to take a tour at Audi Sport manufacturing.

They build the R8 there, they only assemble the RS cars. angry

    Everything done by hand...

Space Frame with Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers, the R8 and it's LMS race car brother share 95(!)% of parts. Engines share 99(!)% of parts. No kidding. The LMS car uses the unmodified engine from the R8 road car. Only difference is the injection system because of the rules.

Fun fact: They assemble the Huracan in Italy but they pre-build (space frame, body) the car in Germany at Audi Sport and ship it to Italy.

All engines (R8 and Huracan) are manufactured in Hungary on the same assembly line. Gearbox comes from a Swiss manufacturer (I think the same one McLaren uses).

Not your regular Audi, even if it may not look that way.

Smiley Oerlikon Graziano is the gearbox manufacturer...now I remember. They make the gearboxes for the 12C and 650S as well and maybe for newer models too (not sure though). Also, they make the Aventador gearbox, which sucks. Still wondering why they cannot make a DCT like in the Huracan/R8 for the Aventador. Maybe because of higher torque? Smiley
