The BMW M5 still sitting at the dealers exhibition

    IMG_0516.JPG

The new BMW M5. I was lucky to get one.
This BMW sells very well. In the German car forums, the buyer complain that they have already ordered in October 2017, but just now, May/June, they can expect the delivery. (If they’re lucky) Any today ordered M5 will not be delivered before January 2019. (German market)

What happened that I got an M5 anyway?
My dealer, (I’m a  customer for years), had a new M5 in his exhibition since 2 days, which he wanted to use as a demonstration car. I was in the shop to mount the summer wheels on my BMW 7 series and saw the brand new M5, which was there completely in my desired equipment. That's exactly how I would have ordered it! Since I know the manager of the dealership because of a different business connection, I was able to proverbially persuade him to sell the car immediately. It was just a stroke of luck.blush

My new M5 with the color Daytona Grey is of course equipped with carbon roof and ceramic brakes. In addition full leather and Alcantara and the track package, which contains among others the sports exhaust and the speed unlock to 305 kp/h.

    IMG_0570.JPG

The black carbon roof is a nice contrast to the lighter color and fits well to the wheels
    IMG_0571.JPG

I will use the car for business, so the  upcoming M5 Competition is out of question for me. The extra power is comparatively marginal, but the suspension is even harder and stiffer.
The acceleration of the Comp. 0-200 kp/h is claimed to be 10.8 sec.
In the latest issue of the German „Sport Auto“ however, the „normal" M5 has already been measured with 3.3 sec. (0-100 kp/h) and 0-200 kp/h with 10.9 sec.

In a comparison test with the E63S+  the German "Autobild" even recorded for 0-200 kp/h a value of 10.15 sec. (!!). I think thats insane and more than enough for a business sedan.

    IMG_0565.JPG

Now to the car itself. The break-in time takes unfortunately 2,000 km. During this time the maximum speed is of 170 kp/h and a maximum rpm of 5.000. Last weekend I was on a short vacation in Austria, u.a. on the Grossglockner High Alps passage. (Who doesn't know: highly recommended). So I was able to cover 800 km.

    IMG_0721.jpg

Always nice to see: the Grossglockner Alps

    IMG_0749.jpg
    IMG_0742.jpg

Despite the break-in time I can already say: the M5 is a fantastic car and it has far exceeded my expectations. Of course I didn’t do a test drive before and only tested the previous model 2 years ago.

The new M5 has made a huge leap in development and this not only refers to the new 4WD, which is possible to completely deactivate, but it affects the entire vehicle. Pleasantly firm and comfortable at the same time in the "Comfort" position of the adaptive suspension. The steering is sporty and very precise, also adjustable in 3 positions.

For everyday use also very pleasant:
The sound with the exhaust flaps CLOSED is always present as a subtle, well-balanced V8 sound without ever being bothered or obtrusive. More rumbling in „Sport“ or "Sportplus" position. (Flaps still closed).
With open flaps and position „SportPlus“ however, you get a heavy thunderstorm, with nice backfire. angry

    IMG_0590.JPG

    IMG_0582.JPG

Anyone who’s familiar with the tuning of earlier versions of this M-engine (S63 engine in the M5, X5M, M6) knows that BMW didn’t always had a lucky hand in tuning the exhaust systems. The new M5 has done a lot better, but hasn’t lost its typical sound, but much refined.
No question, the AMG E63S has the louder, deeper and more typical V8 sound in any case.

However, since we have a G63 in our garage as well, I can give my ears a bit of deep AMG sound whenever I need it.

    IMG_0574.JPG

The BMW interior is often described as boring. Yes, it's the way you get used to it. In today’s multiple ways to set up of a car like the M5 I am glad that there are no experiments to operate those cars. Everything is located where you expect it, so you can focus on driving, rather than on the operation. If one will call this „boring“ than I like my boring M5.

Finally I’m definitely very satisfied with the M5 so far as that can be said before the the break in period ends.

Congratulations on your new vehicle.  Between the new M5 and E63+, Audi will really need to step up its game to even remain relevant with the RS6/RS7.

Great write up, thanks. Looking forward to getting one too.

Supertest in sport-auto is also very positive.

If available as a station wagon this could be my next car

thanks for the nice review. i had an F10 BMW M5 and my main issue with it was that it felt sooooo heavy, particularly on twisting roads. also ESP cut in all the time, it was really boring (the mid setting was a bit better though). do you still have that feeling of numb heaviness or is that 'gone' with the current version? enjoy the car, peter

It seems that BMW have excelled themselves with this car.

Superfast, lighter than the competition and with the added versatility of on demand AWD/RWD at 3/4 the price of the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

Hasn’t that become Porsche’s new strategy for its entire portfolio: just as much performance as the competition, but with a higher price tag?

According to the Auto Zeitung magazine the BMW is superior to the Porsche in all dynamic measurements and equal on braking (a BMW weakness up till now) and all at 38.000 EUR less.

    An excellent package.

The Panamera is 30% too expensive for the higher models so that falls in line with the above.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate your comments since I acquired the M5 spontaneously.wink
I’m surprised by the pleasing development of this model and the almost positive tests results of the media.

    Another detail:
After 800 km in mixed driving the consumption is at 12 liters / 100 km.Of course no revs above 5,000 rpm. In quiet driving on country roads, the consumption is even only 10.6 liters. Very surprising.

    I’ll keep you updated.

You can switch off ESP (DSC) completely. In spite of AWD, the curb weight including 90% tank filling and a driver with 75 kg is at  1.930 kg. Carbon roof and ceramic brakes save weight and bonnet and front fenders are made of aluminum. If you look at the lap time at the Nürburging, then you get the impression how nimble the M5 is drivable.

    Thanks a lotSmiley
Small note: my dealer gave me instructions on how to handle the carbon brakes. He warned that in the first 1,000 km, the braking effect is not fully developed. My impression: braking with these discs is like anchor throwing.  A light touch is enough. My wife was surprised while driving my first few km about my driving style, I would always brake so abruptly, she said. Wifes ...Smiley

    Sport Auto Supertest M5

    Time: 7:38,92 (E63 S AMG estate 7:45,19).

More in the next Sport Auto issue...I think.

I have no information about the tires used and the dyno result for the M5 (E63 S had 650 hp or so...).

Unfortunately this can take a while...stupid 3000 km (first 1500 km very strict, 4500 rpm and not faster than 140 kph Smiley and afterwards rising slowly speed and rev figure). After that 3000 km, I have to get the rear axle differential oil exchanged and then I'm good to go.

According to an AMG engineer in the AMG Owners Lounge, the break-in period for the E63 is very very important, the engine is highly break-in sensitive (power-wise) and furthermore, the rear axle differential can overheat and be damaged (it runs on a different oil during break-in).

OK, it is official now...the M5 tested in Sport Auto had 671 hp... angel I just hope the customers get the same power.

In the case of the tested E63 S estate (651 hp), there are reported customer cars with up to 690 hp, so let's hope that BMW didn't "prepare" this car only for the press.

They typically don’t. There were reports of 340i cars hitting 330 hp at the wheels, which would put the engine at around 380. Officially the car has 330 hp, so maybe they report the wheel hp, not the crank hp. Smiley
