    Porsche replaced my engine!

I have a 2004 986 with 32,000 miles on it. I broke it in exactly in keeping with factory guidelines and had the 15k and 30k mile service done on time. I pulled up to a red light and heard a ticking noise. It sounded like a lifter noise. I was about a mile from my house so I drove it home. All gauges looked normal and power didn't seem reduced. I phoned the P dealer from the car and, as it was 4pm on Friday, he told me to bring it in on Monday morning. On Saturday I didn't use the car. On Sunday I ran a short errand and noticed that the ticking was gone. However, the engine started to run rough at idle and, looking in the rear view mirror, I saw what I thought was my exhaust. It seemed darker and more visible than usual so I brought the car right home. Monday morning, I called Porsche and had them bring it to the dealer on a flatbed truck. On Tuesday, the P service department phoned and began by saying, "Your new engine should arrive tomorrow and you can pick up the car the day after." HUH! My new what? For some reason, part of the valve train exited the engine through the valve cover. Removal of the oil filter showed some metal bits were already circulating. So, a brand new engine was installed in my car and the old one was put into the crate and shipped back to Porsche for an autopsy. I've never heard of anyone having to replace an engine in a car. Heck, I've driven cars 125,000 miles with the original clutch. I was going to move up to a 987S or a Cayman S when the 2007 models come out but this burst my Porsche bubble a bit.

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

Thats cool you got a new engine. Maybe if you trade it in now for a 987S or Cayman, you can use that as a selling point

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

I was wondering about that. If you told a buyer that the engine had to be replaced would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

Trade in the car in the same dealer to get the cayman.
They cannot question, why, how and the workmanship.

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

Actually a small number of 996/986 engines have been replaced by Porsche, with no questions asked. Porsche does not let the dealers repair them, but rather has them put in a "new" engine and then the engine is sent back to the factory. It's hard to get accurate data, but I've heard from a number of dealer mechanics that the number is small and typically the failure it was caused by a "manufacturing defect". I've also heard that a replacement engine really does not impact trade-in or re-sale values.
I'm talking about engines that "fail", not those replaced because of chronic RMS problems.

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

    HI,

Actually, the number of engines replaced is not at all small something like 5%-7%. That's a HUGE number. Depending upon the degree of defect, the RMS is either replaced with a two year warranty or the engine is replaced with either a New engine or a 'Rebuilt' one. An acquaintance just had a New motor installed in his '04 Boxster S due to RMS failure.

The problem is inherent in the casting procedure which Porsche does. They use a method which supposedly requires no final Machining (Line-Boring) the Crank opening. If the Block is defective, the RMS will not seal properly around the two halves of the block. The degree of defect(s) will determine the degree of RMS failure.

The RMS is usually a Progressive Failure, that is, it starts out slowly leaking and gets worse in time. But a number of them (like my friend's) have been sudden. With these sudden failures, internal engine damages usually occurs, so the engine has to be replaced. Porsche and the Dealer look at each on a case-by-case basis and determine whether the engine is Kapoot or can simply be repaired.

    Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

I agree with you, but as my post said, I was only commenting on failures NOT related to RMS.

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

u mean !? u pulled the rpm to the red then what happen?

i did pulled mine on second gear the rpm up the the top and sudden engine lost power!but after i change it to third gear ,the car back to normal. is that the problem? but that was on my 996 c4s,

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

No, that sounds like the rev limiter kicking in. I didn't go near the red line. It just happened.

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

    see..that break-in stuff is crap.

I tend to agree. The only cars I ever had problems with were the cars I did a careful break-in with.

All cars I drove like I stole them, stayed mechanically unbreakable. Maybe coincidence... but I think that the break-in phase in general has minimal to none influence on the longevity of your engine.

    Re: Porsche replaced my engine!

    Really?
i did care break in and just over 2000 miles
but the engine got into 5000rpm so smooth, i don't even notice if my stereo is loud.
