Italian Military Police Adopt Lotus Evora S

The Carabinieri select British manufacturer Lotus to provide rapid response vehicles in Rome and Milan.

As Italy celebrates 150 years of unification, Group Lotus celebrates an exciting cooperation with the country as two Evora S models have been selected for a very special military duty. The headquarters of the Carabinieri in Rome played host to the event where two bespoke Lotus Evora S cars were handed over by Group Lotus Chief Executive Office Dany Bahar.

    "Excellent British engineering from Lotus"

The Arma dei Carabinieri, a division of the Italian army, play a similar role in Italy to Scotland Yard in the UK and work with the civilian police to provide a crucial service to the public. The Evora S models will be made available to the units based in Rome and Milan.

In preparation for the two year stint with the Carabinieri, both Evoras have been equipped with some of the very latest voice recognition technology including the EVA (Enhanced Vehicle Automation) system. A special portable refrigeration compartment has been fitted behind the front seats which will allow for the rapid transport of vital organs and blood required during medical emergencies.

Commenting at the handover event Group Lotus Chief Executive Officer Dany Bahar said: “We are extremely proud to be working with such an iconic and professional organisation as the Carabinieri who play an integral role in Italian society.”

“Everyone knows that Italy has more than it’s fair share of high profile sports car manufacturers so it is a real honour for a relatively small British brand to be in this position. The feedback from the driver training on the Evora S at our test track was very positive, it’s such a responsive car to drive, I think the teams in Rome and Milan are really going to feel the benefit of working with our product.”

Carabinieri spokesperson, Colonel Marco Minicucci said: “Our special Lotus Evoras combine the very best of our technology with excellent British engineering from Lotus. Not just anyone can drive these cars, we carefully selected some of our team to attend a driver training session at the new test track at Lotus’ headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk where they learnt all about the very special characteristics and incredible potential of the cars.”

What I was referring to, is that in 2008, the italian police receive a Gallardo to play with:

    And they crashed it:

    So, now they get evoras...

Maybe this toy (nice car, but I don't know any duty which can't be done with a police sedan) will help Lotus drivers when speeding in Italy ...

Re: Italian Military Police Adopt Lotus Evora S

The only reason I can think of is that Lotus gave them away for free to create this type of cheap publicity

If the Carabinieri paid for these, my only response is: this shows why Italy may need a Eurozone bailout in 2011-2012

These cars don't make any sense in the hands of police. If they need rapid response vehicles, sporty sedans with lots of horses are the better choice, especially since they can fit in all the equipment.

I remember seeing a GSG9 team (at that time, they were responsible for protecting such transports) following a money truck from the german treasury (see photo). They were following in a very old BMW 7 series...looked kind of funny, four guys with masks and no, they weren't thieves, they had a police light on the BMW.

This is an older photo but it shows how much stuff a rapid response team needs to store in a car. It may be less nowadays with modern equipment but still...

The Evoras will be used as pursuit vehicles, just like the Gallardos. They won't be required to carry a small arsenal inside their tiny boots.

They got the Evora S. small car, good in handling, nice horse power. Now need only to know how good are the drivers.

In a similar vein I remember travelling through Germany in around 1981 and seeing a few Polizei 911's on the autobahns and near the border crossings like the one below. I recall seeing one that was a targa and the officer in the passenger seat was sitting with a semi automatic machine pistol in his lap.

A couple of years ago I believe I saw a 997 Techart that had a Polizei livery. It was looking really great, silver and green :)

Re: Italian Military Police Adopt Lotus Evora S

The article mentions a two year stint. I have to assume this is a cost free promotional venture.

Regarding the Gallardo and just who are you going  to get to drive these cars: A veteran officer was training a young female officer fresh from  the training academy. When they were engaged in a traffic pursuit, she drove the car up to 65mph in a 65 zone and let off the gas. He told her  to floor it and she said that was the fastest she had ever driven. It would be unsafe to drive any faster.

He asked if she hadn't ever taken a car out to a desterted stretch of road and run it up to 100mph. She said no of course not, that would be  illegal. He then asked if you are pursuing a speeder while driving at the speed limit exactly how long do you think it will take to catch them.

The majority of officers aren't good at driving fast and aren't good with handguns. Fortunately the criminals don't know which officer is responding.

Re: Italian Military Police Adopt Lotus Evora S

There is no need for high speed pursuit cars, especially not in Italy.

Even in Germany, most stealth (those without any markings) Autobahn police cars are high power sedans, usually V6 models of BMW, Audi or Mercedes. Nothing really special, they do 250 kph at best.

There is no need for such cars because:

    1. you usually have the license plate (and a nice video/photo of the offender or at least of his car with the license plate)

    2. you can easily shut down an Autobahn by setting up an artificial obstacle, slowing down the traffic or even stopping it (german police does this all the time)

    3. there are helicopters patrolling and almost every region has one in the air most of the time and/or it can get one into the air within 15 minutes

    4. a highway isn't really a city where you can hide with a car

There are so many possibilities, so I actually think that this whole Lotus/Carabinieri stuff is just a publicity stunt. Italians love cars, so maybe Lotus provided some cars for showing off but I doubt that they are going to be used in real pursuit, at least not effectively.

No, there is no Porsche police car in active duty in Germany.

Re: Italian Military Police Adopt Lotus Evora S

You 'd be surprised by the need for quick cars in italian A and B roads (assuming that the choppers have the autostrada covered, which is not always the case). Then again this is more of a publicity stunt than a true need.

Probably it is not active but it is a good looking car. Unfortunately it seems that I can't insert a picture here, from my iPad :(
