Here is a nice summary of Porsche's mid-engined cars...

    From Edmunds Inside Line:

Re: Here is a nice summary of Porsche's mid-engined cars...

Sheesh they butchered the 914 info. Never trust Edmunds for anything historical. Some minor corrections and additions.

Go look at a 914 body. There is not a single flat surface on it as they said. Every single body panel has a
compound curve or a bow to it.

And neither Porsche or VW designed the body. It was designed by Goggomobile of Germany. Luggage room is almost
    twice that of a Boxster.

And the 914/6 had a 110hp engine that was a detuned version of the 125hp 911T's so as to make it slower. That plan failed. The car was still quicker and faster than the 911T.

There were few 916s made at the factory, but the Factory sold many M471 kits for dealers to make their own to sell.

The 914/6 placed first in the GT Class at Le Mans in 1970. Some thing a Boxster has bever achieved.

Herr Peich had built for himself a 400hp 914 that used the 908 8cyl engine, that was his daily driver car back then.

    And on and on..Edmunds, ouch!

Compare the side windows of a 914 with the Carrera GT. Their shapes are identical, that and their floor mounted pedals link them in Porsches DNA, while the Boxster is just a interloper.

...And they neglected to mention the 1996 (993) 911 GT1 StraBeversion.

Perhaps someone "in the know" in PAG logged on here ( ) can drop us a morsel of rumour on a REAR-engined, 997-typ, 911 GT1.

I had a 240 hp 914/6 that was alot of fun:

They finished ahead of all the 911s. Maybe thats why Porsche never enter the race again with it.

Mike, were those flares rolled out with a baseball bat?
    Beautiful car!

Felix, Porsche pulled the plug on the 9i4 racing effort for exactly that reason. The car had a longer wheelbase than the 911, better aerodynamics, better hi speed stability and weighed less.

However with 911 sales the money maker, there was no sense
in embarrasing them by running 914/6's against 911's. So it made no sense financially to heavily develop the 914/6 more.

    Thanks so much!

The flares were a "copy" of 911 Carrera flares of the day. They were done by Stoddard's body guys who were quite talented. They did a 356 from "spare" parts for one of Ferry Porsche's major birthdays as a present from the Porsche Club of America. After viewing it, Ferry announced that it was better turned out than any 356 that the factory ever built. True story

Those Stoddard guys were incredible. Are they still as talented there?

Please anyone dont think I was being facitious about the baseball bat, its a old bodyshop trick to roll a baseball bat between the top of a tire and the inner fender to flare the fenders.

    Interesting 356 story

I know that Ferrys last personalized car was a 986 Tip that was green/green/green and that they made the last 928 green on green also. Do you know what the color was for his 356?

So far here on Rennteam, no one yet has confessed to a green interior.
