I've worked with many programmers who could not see the value in "simplifying" their user interface functions. They couldn't "get" why it would be of value to reduce the number of steps necessary to excecute often used commands.
I have not used iDrive myself so I am basing my impressions solely on the many reviews I have seen. But from what I have read, there are many often used functions that require far too many steps to excecute; things like the climate control or radio functions that would be easier to use if they were separate buttons or knobs on the dash.

Why I-drive just totally sucks.
Go test drive a M6.
See how many steps and screens it takes to get FULL MAX power. Its ridiculous.
5 I-drive screens and 2 other different switches later you finally get FULL POWER. Ducky!
What programmer thought of that? What manager signed off on that? and worse yet - what BMW executive said lets accept that? !!!
They seem to have ZERO knowledge of and no talent for MMI -
Man Machine Interface when it comes to controls.

Idrive (if you understand the logic) helps you to concentrate on the street. You have just one controller and the levels. It is so easy if you have learned how it works. Some people need one day some maybe one week. The people you couldn't use Idrive can't use an Ipod or a modern mobile phone.

I think the i-drive is the best user interface in the market. A person with a normal IQ will find it intuitive with in days. The m button makes everything even simplier. You can pre-set all the vehicle settings for race situation.
I drive is less distracting when compare to Porsche's or older bmw's. It's more distracting when you need to look for a button out of so many buttons.
