Unsolicited opinions on a new 987S

For those of you considering a new Boxster...some comments on a new 987S:

    • Atlas Grey is beautiful. Pictures and interior lighting don't do it justice. See it outside.
    • The round sport steering wheel is almost a must-have. The size, shape, and leather are great.
    • The 18 inch wheels look good and ride nicely. They don't fill out the wheel wells quite the way the 19s do, but they are unique to the Boxster, they suit the car, and tires are much less expensive.
    • The standard stereo is so-so. I haven't heard the high-end Bose, so I can't compare.
    • The standard interior is a vast improvement over the 986 and 996.
    • My windstop rattles above 45 or so. I removed it and don't miss it. But I live in Florida where a little extra wind is welcome.
    • The car is comfortable as a daily driver and for multi-hour trips.
    • I have PASM and Sport Chrono, but haven't really tested them yet. PCA DE in a month though...

    YMMV, my 2 cents, etc.

One other thing...Larry "Rev" Reynolds at Champion was a dream to work with.

Re: Unsolicited opinions on a new 987S

My comments, one month on (nearly) :-
Full leather much better than partial, ungainly central joins on dash top on non-leather cars are hidden.
Sports steering wheel OK, thicker, smaller diameter rim very good, but big centre boss a bit ungainly.
Sports seats, very very good - if you are not too broad shouldered.
Driving position and controls perfect - except for fiddly PCM.
Gearshift 3rd - 4th a bit notchy, slightly longer travel than expected so I initially crunched gears a few times.
Heated seats, my wife uses it, I don't.
Bose excellent, but I don't listen to it very much as the engine sounds better.
Fuel consumption 26.5mpg on Optimax, OK I'm running the car in but the engine is presumably tight. Better than expected.
Rear visibility when reversing - I've got used to it.
I don't like not having a dipstick. The electro-gizmo says it is not using any oil.
I don't mind not having a spare wheel until I get a puncture.
Probably the most comfortable long distance car I've ever had. Refinement exceptional for a soft top car. PASM fabulous.
19" wheels give visual drama, fill the wheelarches better but make brakes seeem tiny, especially the rear. An extravagence, really, like the Bose sound system, but they do look the business compared with the 18" IMO.
Navigation very quick and accurate compared with CD system in my last BMW. Extraordinary detail on map, even my tiny 6 house cul-de-sac is on it. BUT the PCM is very fiddly, almost dangerous, to use in detail when actually driving. Having to "confirm" that I will obey the traffic laws before I can access the navigation every time is a right PITA.
No rattles, no squeaks, no faults, no complaints. Quality of build, fit and finish exceptionally good.
More than enough performance for congested, speed limited, safety camera infested UK roads, especially once its run in.
The driving experience just gets better every time I drive it. I MUST do a high performance driving course so I can fully appreciate the car's abilities.

Sport seats are an absolute must, they give so much more support than the standards one. Being broad shoulderd is not a problem, being fat is...

They're not that much more supportive..I'm not fat but I do have broad shoulders which don't fit really.. on long drives it can be uncomfortable..

Wasn't really serious. I like the sug fit and the support the sport seats give me. I test drove a 997 with the standard seats and didn't like them, maybe because they are wider also? I'm 192 and 92kg (and not fat )and I can fit in my 986S sport seats, also after a 5 hour drive they are still comfortable.

But I guess it's all a question of personal taste
