What harm can a little weight do?

    Re: PANAMERA - The AD

Thought you folks might enjoy this old photo I took of a Gulf 917 at speed at Watkins Glen in the 1970's.  It was raining like H that day so you imagine what Rodriquez (or Siffert) had on his hands.  Contrast this working brute to the cleaned up Gulf 917 in the ad.

I had the pleasure of meeting both Rodriquez and Siffert with Phil Hill in Monaco in the early 70s.  Siffert and Rodriquez died later in shunts on tracks around the world.

A pair of 906s at the Glen in the 1970s.  2.0 liter displacement if I remember correctly...

butler0-R1-E006.jpgAnd finally (hope I am not a boring old codger here, but these are all pics of working examples of models in the Ad), a Watkins Glen pic of a 908, 917, Ferrari 512, and a 906 (obscured partially by spectator and about to be sucked up by the more powerful cars).

    racerx:

There was no need to make the panamera SO BIG. It could have been at least 3 inches lower with 2 coming from that un-used headroom and 1" from lowering the seat to the floor. And maybe even more on the ride height of the vehicle.Smiley

I completely agree. I'm also disappointed because Porsche has taken the decision to offer the Panamera as a 4-seater only. For some people this means a no-go because they have three kids or two kids and a nanny.

I am one of them. I've got 3 kids...so I would never by this car. Not that I would now, but maybe when I' ll get older I could be interesed in one.

Great pictures, did you make them? The accessibility and soundtrack must´ve been intoxicating, unfortunately those cars, as gorgeous as they look, only come to their own when they are racing so I missed out on that experience.

Well, there are still some historic races on the horizon... Smiley

    Re: PANAMERA - The AD

Thanks Ferdie.  Yes I did  take these photos, and used to follow Porsche (and Formula 1 as well) racing during those wonder years.  The 917 was a monster, and Siffert and Rodriquez were splendidly talented, ferociously competitive even with each other, and tragically star crossed.  Andretti in the Ferrari 512 was the adversary.  Porsche/Ferrari rivalry at its most riveting...

Yes it is too bad because it could have been unquestionably the best luxury sedan on the market, performance is there, craftsmanship is there. but they went off a cliff when they messed with their original sketch.

You would have been the target market.

Porsche showrooms could have been quite the place had the design been a winner and the CGT remained a production model upgraded with time with paddle shifters and a new 600hp GT.  - A few poor decisions.

Thanks Wonderbar, those are amazing pieces of history!

    Very nice Misha!

I suppose that's what it was originally going to look like.

    Re: PANAMERA - The AD

    Thanks Spideridol

After a visit to Porsche showroom and looking at Panamera from all angels , I can say that M. Mauer and his team did a great job .  In real ( specially with air suspension - to lower the car and make rear and front at the same height ) Panamera is so well proportioned and very very mighty .  Like each and every Porsche  ,  Panamera  looks way better in real than on pictures .

This drawing is wonderful 'dream'  that was successfully transferred into 'reality'
