is audi going to buy ferrari from fiat?

fiat as usual is in financial trouble and is considering selling ferrari to raise money.

wouldn't it be nice if porsche were the buyer instead of audi?
the combination of ferrari style with porsche engineering would be awesome!!

Re: is audi going to buy ferrari from fiat?

that will NEVER happen. Audi already has Lambo... why do they need ferrari?

Ford has Aston Martin and Jaguar - what's the difference? I could see it...

Yeh, and that's what you would also have said about VW, which has owned Audi for decades, if you heard rumours of VW wanting to buy Bugatti or Bentley....

Guess who owns Bugatti and Bentley.

Maybe I'm missing something but doesn't own GM a pretty heavy chunk of Fiat and don't they have the right to buy Fiat (and Ferrari) first in case of a sale?
Ferrari in US hands...I wouldn't be surprised to see that sooner or later.

As far as I know, Porsche is in no position to buy Ferrari or any other car manufacturer. They're actually more likely to be bought themselves by VW sooner or later...or Audi (which would actually be the same ).

Enzo Ferrari would flip in his grave if GM buys Ferrari . Even though financially they could probably support Ferrari much better than FIAT.

Look what Ford did for Aston, as long as they away from the engineering and design they'll make money.

We just have to wait and see.

    ignacio,
Where did you hear this news from, regarding Ferrari's acquisition?

Re: is audi going to buy ferrari from fiat?

As I understand it - and I could easily be wrong, I have no knowledge of any of this other than what I've found on the web - the original agreement between GM and Fiat was signed in March 2000. Fiat swapped a 20 percent stake in its Fiat Auto unit, comprising the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands, for 5.1 percent of GM stock, worth $2.4 billion at the time. The agreement gave Fiat the right to sell the remainder of Fiat Auto to GM from 2004 to 2009 at "fair market value".

It gets more complicated after that, but the point is that the GM option applies to Fiat Auto, not Ferrari/Maserati.

Ownership of Ferrari itself also is a bit complex.

Re: is audi going to buy ferrari from fiat?

Oh yes, VW will buy Porsche? Sounds good, but it will not happen in the next 10 years. But it could be a good possibility to get back to the roots.
I tell you guys, the 997 is nice, but if the 998 (2010?) won't follow an other strategy, than the porsche image will go to finally lost.
Only VW or Maybe BMW (I hope that at this time Bangle will be out of charge already) are able to keep porsche as porsche. SPORTSCARS (only) Made in Germany.

Question: what would be Ferrari without Fiat in the background (money, development capacity, etc.)?
Could they survive without "mother" Fiat? Have a look at F1 cost and I think you find your answer.
If GM decides to buy Fiat, I really think it'll be the whole package including Maserati and Ferrari. Otherwise Fiat would be worth a piece of junk...to say it frankly. GM needs Ferrari for marketing purposes.
Let me take Ford and Jaguar as an example: is the current Jaguar model line better or worse than 10-15 years ago? I'd say it is more attractive and quality has improved too. I don't think GM buying Ferrari would really be a problem as long as Ferrari is allowed to do their stuff by their own.

Regarding VW and Porsche: Ferdinand Piech still has a great influence over VW, even if he isn't the boss anymore. And as you know, Piech is the son of Porsche's sister and a member of the famous Porsche family. IF Porsche will be sold to a bigger company or IF Porsche sells a part of their shares to a bigger company, I'm pretty sure it'll be VW and nobody else.
Right now Wiedeking does everything possible to keep Porsche independent and this is actually what most customers and probably most employees prefer. If the 4th model will be a success and if the 997 sells well (Porsche doesn't need record sales numbers), Porsche can stay independent for the next 10 years, I'm pretty sure about it.
The US market counts most: if the US economy recovers (and signs are not bad, despite the war in Iraq and the current terrorist attack and threats in Spain), Porsche will have some nice suprises for their shareholders over the next few years.

I don't want to hide it: I never liked Porsche's cooperation with VW. The Cayenne is actually a rebadged Touareg which has been adapted to Porsche "standards", I don't try to push the truth away from me, even if I own a Cayenne Turbo.
But if I look at the quality level of the Cayenne, I have to say that it is even higher than on the 996 and Boxster. And we're talking about a COMPLETELY new product in it's second production year. I remember my first 996, one of the first customer cars in Germany (built dec. 1997). Quality impression was horrible, cheap plastic everywhere and dozens of little problems which drove me crazy. The car even spent one week at Werk 1 and one week in Weissach(!) to get everything fixed. Porsche Service was great but the quality of the first 996s was definetely horrible. This is why I never can recommend buying a 996 or even Boxster from the first or even the second production year. The Cayenne is a different story, no real problems so far, only little flaws which have been fixed even during production very fast.

Re: is audi going to buy ferrari from fiat?

whats next?! a corvette chassis based ferrari?! (like the vw based porsche)

Re: is audi going to buy ferrari from fiat?

I dont think that will hapend, but who knows? Everone is buying everyone and owns a little piece here and a piece there... So maybe we will see a reliable Ferrari (= owned by, say, Toyota).
