    Windscreen chip REPAIR?

There's been a lot of discussion here on windscreen replacement, but can't find any on windscreen repair.

I caught a "brick" full on last week - right in my eye line.

I'm told that the resulting damage can be repaired by drilling through the chip and filling it with resin. It's supposed to be a permanent and invisible fix!!

Anyway I'm having it done tomorrow for about Pounds40. Figure it can't do any more harm and is worth a try before embarking on a full replacement, unless anyone here has tried it and had problems with it?

Would be glad of any observations please - thanks.

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

Tried it on my car but was too damaged and couldn't be fixed so a new screen it was!

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

A brick? This is what we refer to as a brick. You're lucky to be alive. Seriously, let us know if that fix works.

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

I'm confused, too, and also from the UK. Is a North W brick different from a South E brick?

Seriously, the proposed fix sounds interesting. Which company(ies) are you thinking about doing it?

Also I have a v small but quite deep scratch on my paint (Atlas Grey) - any idea how to get rid of/disguise that?

    Thanks,

    SoS.

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

LOL - I said "brick" because it was bloody big whatever it was!! Didn't stop to try to find it, too busy trying to stay on the road. Seriously, it sounded like a rifle shot while I was cornering at high speed - don't recommend it.

Glad my seats are a dark colour - the stains don't show.

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

Meant to say I'm having it done tomorrow morning and will report back. According to the guy I spoke to, it's supposed to work so long as the chip is no bigger than a one pound coin!! We'll see.....

Hello, I've just become an "addict" - knew I was spending too much time here!

My other half had a similar chip fixed in this way on her freelander. Not sure of the quality of the job done, but it is still very obvious, although it has stopped the crack spreading. It's over on the passenger side, so not a problem for MOT. Unless yours is completely invisible when repaired, it might be an MOT failure.

Be interested to hear how good a job they do.

Also, I had a very deep paint gouge 'repaired' by a Chips Away guy. (Franchised 'we just paint the chip' outfit). Again, not sure of the quality of the job, but while it is disguised and does protect the metal, it didn't bring the damage back to the same level as the surrounding paint (you can still feel it), and is still pretty obvious. Metallic is difficult to match without spraying the area. Again, I'd be interested to know how you get this fixed, and how good a job they do.

Sorry to hear of your misfortunes!

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

If in the UK, you call that big glass thing in front of you a "windscreen" (it's a "windshield" in the US), what do you call the mesh screen that you put up behind you in the cabriolet (which in the US is a "windscreen")? Do you call it a "wind deflector"? Just genuinely curious and not at all trying to be a smart ass.

    I'll be a smartass..

We call it a "deflector" - which is the same as we call someone who pi$$e$ off to China!!

    Re: Windscreen chip REPAIR?

Had the job done today with mixed results.

The guy was very helpful and knowledgable. The organisation is called 'OPTIC-KLEER' and they have franchises all over the UK.

The two main problems for me were that the chip is right in my eye-line and also I left it too long for the best results. Small star shaped cracks were already appearing around the chip making the treatment area that much bigger. If I'd had it done straight away, the fix would have been much better.

As it is there's a vast improvement and had it not been right in my eye-line I would have been totally satisfied. Also the damage is now stabilised so no chance of cracks. Because it wasn't perfect he didn't charge me which seems very fair.

I'll now wait until the summer and get a replacement screen as chances are I'll pick up a few more during winter from gritters etc.

As I said - anywhere else on the windscreen I'd have been more than happy.

    Cheers, John

    Hi S of S,

The guy I saw yesterday didn't touch bodywork but I asked a pal of mine who does about your scratch. He said it depends on how deep it is and where it's situated. If you can feel it with your fingernail it's most likely a respray job to get it perfect. As the paint is fairly thick on P cars and dark colours are softer, you may find a skilled rub and polish will help disguise it.

Best check with your friendly bodyshop.
