    Limited Slip Differential options

    Hi,
    I've had my 996 now for about a month and the only thing I am truely dissapointed about is that it does not have a limited slip differential (LSD). PSM does not come close to making up for it. When trying to put powerdown in a corner and the brakes come on it is not a good feeling. I would rather modulate my traction myself with the gas pedal than have the computer step in and do it with the brakes.

    What are my options? I prefer to low maintainance with a gear type LSD instead of a clutch type. I've used Torsen's (in my S2000's) and been quite happy. I see that Quaife makes one for the 996. What sort of LSD was offered in the 1999 Carrera? Should I look for one to pull out of a wrecked car? Order the part from Porsche? Part from a Turbo, GT3?

    How will the LSD interact with the PSM?

    How hard is the install?

    Any advise would be great.

    So I answered a few of my own questions.
    The LSD from the 2004 40th Anniv. Ed is 996-332-083-00
    I was quoted $5505 plus 9 hours R&R.
    The entire transmission is $11,595!

    Wow - that is one pricey LSD. A nice aftermarket one is much less than half as much and probably better (Paul Guard). I think you may want to consider whether the PSM on the Anniversary cars is tuned differently to accommodate the LSD. Since your PSM will not be so tuned, it would be worth knowing.

    I think adding the fantastic Guard LSD would be dicey, since it would likely interfere with PSM - usually have much higher locking ratios than the one in the anniversay 996 (GT3 has much higher locking ratios too - that's the reason GT3 has no PSM).

    It has been confirmed that the 40th anni ed. does not have a modified PSM. The LSD is a low 22% locking.

    Ok - good to know. I guess that is the best/only solution then for a clutch-type LSD - too bad it's so pricey...

    That is the remarkable thing. It is NOT a clutch pack type LSD! It is a gear driven type. The Quaife equivalent is only $1,395.

    Here is exactly what Porsche say about the LSD of the 40th straight out of the differences manual.

    Limited-slip differential
    Because this vehicle is equipped with PSM and a limited-slip differential with a high locking rate would work against this system, a mechanical, asymmetric, limited-slip differential with locking rates of 22% in traction and 27% in overrun is used.

    Probably a pain to adapt but you might look at a '99 996. Mine has Traction Control w/ ABD and a mechanical LSD w/ I think 40% locking under braking. I didn't like the understeer w/ the stock front 18" tire sizes so I've been running 235mm wide up front/ 265 wide in the rear and been enjoying it for 8 years. There're must be a mechanic out there somewhere that could swap one from a wrecked car or rebuilt unit. Might be as costly as the option you've already found though.

    99 was the last year before PSM, so while LSD was an option in 99, it was not made to be compatible with PSM. The Anniversary model 996 and Sport Suspension PASM 997 were the only ones (other than GT models)...
