From everything I've heard the TT is a beast great but vvv quick - suggest if you go that way, be careful not to overdo on the throttle until you learn more about it. Never fancied a cab myself so can't comment - the driving experience is bound to be less pure (apart from the sound, wind in the hair etc).
This sounds like a great topic for RC - Mr TT himself!

The 996 was built in a time whe Porsche was in a more difficult situation and had to cut some costs in the 996 such as the Boxster front. The 997 comes in a totaly different time for Porsche now, its has more reliable engines (its the same ones as in the 966 but with 6 years of ironing out all the problems and imporved), has a much better chasis (improved, more rigid, much better performing), and is clearly better built and quality inside. You can say the 996 was the beta version of the 997...
I would keep that particular mechaic who said something like that away from my car if were you BTW
