    AMG ONE

The AMG One is finally ready.

Now Mercedes and Red Bull can finally battle off track too with this and the Valkyrie.

Personally I like the Valkyrie better, 11,000rpm V12.

Gordon Murray's T50 just became old news. Either of these 2 are so much better, much more of a driver's car with the dual clutch transmission so one can keep both hands on the wheel for maximum feel of the road.

Surprised Gordon didn't put carburetors on his engine to keep the old timer theme going with the manual gearbox.

SmileySmiley and print his name on every component as well.

    Re: AMG ONE

I saw a video from remove before race and when he said that this engine will find it's way eventually to the C class in a certain form (V6 1.6)  it's game over for the car for me.  Nothing comes close to Cosworth in comparison.

    Re: AMG ONE

Ridiculous concept imo. Why would you want an engine severely restrained by rules for a competition it's not competing in. yes

    Re: AMG ONE

If I had the money they would go to GMA, even though I am not sure I understand the choice of gearbox. Surely Gordon has his specific ideas where some might not be overly modern, but on the other side I am very impressed with the speed he and his team has developed this car. The engine seems to be a masterpiece.

I think the Aston will drive 10 km, and then sit with the mechanics for a few weeks and then being repeated over and over until the owners are not willing to accept this anymore. The Merc I have no idea about, but again I could be concerned that the car has been delayed over and over. There is a reason for this and likely due to challenges which did not find solutions as easily as Merc had hoped. I hope that the solutions chosen are not causing issues in the future.

    Re: AMG ONE

All three engines revs to over 10,000rpm, but the T50 has the easiest job, smaller displacement V12 with small pistons.

The Mercedes is second, engine was already in existence and they only had to adapt it for street use. Which is why it has taken so long, it's not easy to adapt the F1's engine for street use with the hybrid system.

The Cosworth V12 is the gem, it's not easy taking a 6.5L V12 to over 10,000rpm.

Nothing impresive for such a car.

    Re: AMG ONE

It certainly is a weighty addition considering that the ICE power plant is good for less than 600 hp.  Evidently that whizzo four electric motors and battery offset any potential lightness to that platform.

    Re: AMG ONE

Production of the Mercedes-AMG ONE customer vehicles has started

The exclusive car production is completed by hand at a total of 16 assembly and testing stations.

A general overview of the production steps organised in 16 main stations:

    • Station 1 to 4: Assembly of the mechanical parts and all low-voltage components as well as installation of essential powertrain components including vehicle electrics.
    • Station 5 to 6: Assembly of high-voltage battery and high-voltage connections, test runs of combustion engine and electric motors, and commissioning of the vehicle.
    • Station 7: Interior Installation.
    • Station 8: Start of exterior body panel installation, doors and quarter panels. During this process, the pre-finished body panels; front clam, rear clam, quarter panels and doors, meet the main assembly line from the sub-assembly area of the facility. Here, too, the special challenge lies in the sometimes very different customer wishes.
    • Station 9: Continue exterior installation. Front and rear clam.
    • Station 10: Final installation of exterior body.
    • Station 11: Assembly of wheels and floor panels.
    • Station 12: Adjustment of wheels and headlamps.
    • Station 13: Roller dynamometer for testing the vehicle in all driving modes.
    • Station 14: Four-post NVH test (noise, vibration, harshness), fine-tuning if necessary.
    • Station 15: Monsoon rain test.
    • Station 16: Light booth with visual inspection of all surfaces and technical function tests of all components.

Something doesn't work with this car for me... I saw it in the flesh, and yes it looks impressive, but not as the pricetag suggests. I feel the should have gone for a way more radical design, I feel like you can see the weight of this car... I love AMG but here I have got to admit that in this category the AM Valkery is a wayyyyy more impressive car in every aspect. But that's just my opinion winksmiley

    Funny you say that.

A number of years ago, on a 918 owners gathering, we were discussing the AMG ONE and the Aston. One of my friends lamented the fact that he wasn't able to get a ONE, and had to 'settle' for the Valkyrie instead.

Ran into him again at Geneva Autoshow where Aston had the mock up there. He was second guessing the purchase and wanted to cancel, I told him to hang onto it, the Aston will be a much better car. I honestly think that.

Now with both cars out, I guess I was correct all along. And I believe he is getting his soon enough.

Best bit, his Aston will be road legal in the USA while the AMG ONE will not be. AMG must have had at least 25-30 cancellations from the American buyers when they were notified of the fact that the can won't be legal in the USA.

    Re: AMG ONE

Nothing about this car attracts me, the engine, the weight, the sound, the design, the development time, etc... the only thing this car has in common with supercars like the Valkyrie or the T.50 is the pricetag...

    Re: AMG ONE

I agree with your statements. Nothing to be really excited about which is a shame.

    Re: AMG ONE

To be honest not that impressed with the time.  I'm sure weather wasn't ideal: temps, dark,  blah blah blah.  If Porsche makes a 992 GT2RS I expect it will be close to if not beating this time.

    Re: AMG ONE

The last GT2 RS slightly refined by Manthey Racing did  6:43.30 on the 20.8 km circuit.

So, this €2 million+ outlandish vehicle using F1 tech and aero and all the high-end performance hybrid complexities managed to beat a tuned up previous generation 911 Turbo by some 8 secs. Honestly, I am not impressed.

The AMG ONE should have approached the 919 Hybrid Evo time of 5:19.55 to be justify the cost of the project and to be worth the price they are charging.

Even on a single lap, he had to lift off in order to conserve power. Not impressed also, considering price and gazillion years of development…

    Re: AMG ONE

Anyone that put deposits down for this, and the Valkyrie, thinking they'd have the ultimate road cars must be kicking themselves right about now.

    Re: AMG ONE

    I'm against the grain.

I think this is a super impressive time. A good 20+ seconds better than a 918, maybe 7 years after. I discounted the Manthey tuned GT2RS as that a tuned car, 'almost' factory but not quite. This is a factory stock car.

What is 'worth it'? Faster car worth more? More luxurious worth more? Or the badge worth more?

I can take a GT2RS and set a lap time at my track, and some bozo can jump into his $20k Formula Ford or a 80k Radical and set a quicker time. Actual fact. A GT2RS can do low 2 mins, 2:0something at best, while a Formula Ford in good hands can do 2mins or even sub 2 mins laps. Radicals are doing sub 2 mins laps.

A Chiron is comparable in price, but a lot slower, more luxurious however. So is the AMG ONE better? Depends on ones point of view.

Van Gogh's painting are accepted to be expensive. But are they good paintings by merit? Or only by reputation because who painted it? I would argue his paintings are garbage. It's only bid up astronomically because some people have interest in keeping the prices high. My son did oil painting lessons when he was young. He did one when he was 6, it was of a vase with flowers on a table by a window. I think he did a better job painting something than Van Gogh. Why would I pay $200 mil for a Van Gogh when my son did a better painting for free? Is that the argument? What is 'worth it'?

I haven't sat in a AMG ONE, nor did I order one. I have friends that have, and they went through fittings. The AMG ONE seat is night and day more comfortable than the Porsche buckets. And trimmed just as nice if not nicer. So by the standard of luxury, the AMG One wins over the GT2RS already. The better performance is just the cherry on top.

Going back to the GT2RS, or even the new GT3RS. They are faster than the 918, a lot cheaper too, but are they the better car? Do people lust after a GT3RS as oppose to a 918? I think not.

The AMG ONE should be celebrated, that Mercedes went through the whole process to develop the car. they could have abandoned it a long time ago, they didn't. Unlike say Red Bull, who abandoned their part in the Aston Martin Valkyrie project and let Aston finish it by themselves.

The only thing odd was that on the lap, the sound of the car is awful, and also it seems the car can't quite get to 340km/hr, it hit a wall at around 336km/hr then it comes right back down. But that's nitpicking, the cornering speed of the car is amazing.

Another thing is, Maro Engel seems to be taking a drive around the park during his attempt, he doesn't even seems to be taxed one bit. Very relaxed. Unlike say Bergmeister in the GT3RS or Lars Kern in the Manthey GT2RS, both of them are quite busy inside the cockpit. The Porsches seems to be very much on the edge already while the AMG ONE has something left on the table.
