    DSG gearbox

Any views on wether I should wait until the DSG is finally launched or just go ahead and order a manual? Porsche being Porsche ,the DSG will surely work well and the thought of spirited driving with an efficient padlle shift ala Ferrari , is rather exciting. Am I right in thinking it'll perform like a manual ?

    Re: DSG gearbox

I am waiting for the adaption duplec multiplyer made from unobtanium which will be released in 2066 to celebrate the battle of Hastings.

    Re: DSG gearbox

DSG will probably come out Spring 2008. You could have at least 20,000 KM of fun by that time!

    Re: DSG gearbox

I have DSG on my car and love it. Being able to bang off shifts without pressing in the clutch is great. I don't want to own another car without it.

But this is the Boxster board.
I heard it would be introduced in MY '66 on the 911 and the Boxster wouldn't get it till MY '67.

Ferrari F1 (or SMG from BMW if you want) and DSG (at least from VW/Audi) are two pairs of shoes. At least in their latest versions the F1 is the perfect substitute for a manual, whereas the DSG behaves much more like an automatic gearbox and therefore is the substitute for the tiptronic (which it actually will replace) for me.

What I'm trying to say: if you drive a F1, most of the time you want it to drive with the paddles, there are only a few situations like heavy city traffic, traffic jam of if you are very, very lazy where you let the automode do the (little - since there is no clutch pedal anymore) work for you. An automode which delivers absolutely satisfying gearchanges in the latest version of the F1 by the way.
But if you drive a car with DSG you let the DSG do most of the work do for you - at least I do, you use it as a proper automatic transmission and due to the absence of rev-variation you also have the feeling of driving a true automatic. Changing the gears with the paddles in a DSG car just doesn't make as much fun as it does in a F1/SMG car.

Very good point, Rossi - DSG = enhanced automatic gearbox, but not a substitute for those who prefer a manual gearbox for the more driver involving experience. Hence, if Werner is a "manual guy" it doesn't make sense to wait for the PDK.

Thank you. You've clarified and answered what I really wanted to know. I am, as you put it ,a "manual guy" and was hoping for real life paddle involvement and auto for peak traffic only. Not a permanent auto with shift paddles. If you are right PDK is not what I am after.

What I said about DSG applies to the DSG of Volkswagen/Audi only. We all have no experience about how a Porsche PDK will be. But since the PDK will be the technical brother to the DSG and since it is said to replace the tiptronic, it is fair to assume PDK will behave not different than DSG and therefore will be nothing for us "manual guys".

    Re: DSG gearbox

Rossi, I am confused by what you said. Because the DSG seems to be so universally praised (the best semi-auto gearbox, faster shift times) and the SMG has received alot of criticism. I am a total "manual" guy and love it. However I haven't driven an SMG so I can't relate to what one is like.

    Re: DSG gearbox

I am a manual guy and I love the DSG on my A3. I could care less for the CVT Tiptronic on my A4.

Let me put it this way: DSG is a fantastic tranny but to me it just feels like an automatic gearbox. Gearchange may be quicker than in the F1 (if it's true, there are different opinions about that as well) but it doesn't feel like that. No rev-variation, no jerk from the car, nothing. I just can repeat myself, with DSG I let the tranny do most of the work, with F1 I want to be in charge most of the time.
