JoeRockhead:Nice. Have you done the exhaust yet? I have GMG headers with the 200 cell cats on mine. GMG exhaust is going on in the spring most likely.
No, I have been looking into the offering from the Swiss tuner Sportec with ECU upgrade and sport headers. Takes her to 420hp. The dream would be the DeMan 4.5l upgrade. I need to figure out the costs and if it can be made road legal in Switzerland. I rather spend the money on that than a GT3.

It's a great option. My factory warranty is up in just over a year, so might consider the same, The reviews for it are great, and you can add tons of power and fix the gearing issue at once. Downside is resale would be tougher I suppose.
d997h:Seriously, having talked to some GT4 drivers on track, all seemed to have fun but complained a bit about „lack“ of power (since all 991.2 S or 991.2 sometimes, passed them) ... fortunately, my GTS seems not to be tunable that much ...
Yes, the drivetrain is all parts bin. The 9A1 engine with that old Audi-sourced manual transmission. The engine itself is not bad. I like the character and it is well suited for public roads. It is also race proven with the GT4 Clubsport using it. The 718 Clubsport is using the same engine. Porsche did not give it the 4.0 which is in the road car.
The gear shifting is very mechanical and super precise. The greatest feeling. The gear ratios are however sh*t and does not fit well to the engine. A terrible match by Porsche. Fixing the gearing seem to fix the perceived power issue. This is about USD 10k including work.
Upgrading the engine and fixing the gearing seem to be when the real magic happens. See the DeMan 4.5l conversion. It even outruns a 991.2 GT3 RS.
Then again, the car is not about being the fastest

There are conflicting views on the resale. People pointing to Sharkwerks converted GT4s selling used at high prices. Then again, if you do the DeMan, would you ever want to sell it? There is nothing out there like it. The closest is probably a 4.0l manual 997 GT3 RS, but it is likely tame in comparison

It doesn't make sense to convert a relative new car. Now if it was 20 yo that is another story.
Still, I don't understand car marketing. Why manufactures put such long gearing? Is it for test emissions purposes? Or to mute hard launching and accelerations.

I would convert mine instantly if I could
The gearbox in the Boxster/Cayman was sourced from Audi and developed back in the 80s/90s. As I understand it was used in the Audi models with the same model names. Porsche needed a gearbox for the 996 Boxster back in the late 90s and the rest is history.
To me, the first 5 gears are too long and the 6th gear is too short.
"The gearbox we have, don't get me wrong, it's an old one, an existing one and changing the gear was just technically not possible... We would have loved to have seen that, [the gearing] a little bit shorter, but technically there was no way." according to Frank-Steffen Walliser (WhichCar, May 2020).
It beats me how a guy in a shed (in relative terms) seem to have done what Porsche's engineers could not do. Of course I would not have expected Walliser to answer "we could not be bothered" or "then our profit margin would have contracted" or "it would get too close to the GT3", which are the more likely explanations.
Andreas Preuninger once said that the long gearing in the GT4 was due to emissions. This does sound like another excuse.
When Porsche released the 997.2 GT3 RS they shortened the ratio 13% compared to the GT3. No technical issue? It goes without saying that this greatly contributed to the better Ring-time over the standard GT3 thanks to faster acceleration.

the gearbox on 991 GT3s are just excellent and geared correctly.
They protected the 911 by doing a so so job on the GT4. old 997 has similar power to GT4 and behave differently. the GT4RS will carry RS badge so it could eat the 991 series and being justified. I believe this is one of the reason why 992 GT3 will have exotic materials and high retail price. base GT3 will have to be better than the little brother RS.

Plus, the 981 GT4 was a test for Porsche. I don’t think many believed it would become such a success. Hence a minimum amount of changes keeping the cost / price down.

mcdelaug:Porsche engineers the 918, but can’t figure out how to get the gearbox in the Boxster right for 25 years? Blue’s explanations above are more likely the truth. Sad to see lies and excuses from PAG leadership...
I just summarized the info I collected from a few tuners who changed the gear ratios and hundreds of posts on Rennlist on the topic
It turns out this old Getrag gearbox is quite robust, except for 3rd gear which is prone to failure in early 2016 cars. So much that Porsche seem to replace the whole gearbox no-questions-asked on warranty.
Anyway, yes it is sad that Porsche did not put the tiniest effort into changing the gear ratios. Walliser’s answer in the interview is admitting to the issue, lying about the reason and offering PDK as the solution

Interesting, that is what read too from US owners. It took a long time to source new gearboxes. You would have thought more of these were around.
Since the whole gearbox is being replaced it is hard to know what has gone wrong. Sharkwerks reportedly opened a gearbox and found that the fixture of the third gear cog had been changed by Getrag. Under some unknown circumstances the welding seem to break causing the cog to spin instead of drive. 99% of the cases I read about it is this third gear failing.
Maybe the same guys who designed that cog got to work on the GT3 engine later
