If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

of Autocar the British publication. Several articles on Porsche and including computer renditions of future models.

They believe there will be a 911 SUV. Also they claim the 997TT will have limited production of 4000 per year except for the first year which will be more.(Yea Porsche! Maybe your learning something ) The article on the Turbo is very detailed though it reads like it is out of the Porsche Turbo brochure.

Bad news on the Cayman. They claim very sluggish sales and Porsche is contemplating introducing the RS version soon to perk up sales.

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

One look online at new Caymans available makes their claim look very true. Its not a bad car, its just overpriced.

Juat what would a Cayman RS be like?

I would say Cayman RS price will be around 997 GT3 range and it'll be placed between Carrera S and GT3. More expensive than CS and less than GT3 .

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

Make a caymen with a 911 or gt3 engine.. and I AM SOLD!!! That would be a DREAM car.

Agreed! MkI or MkII GT3 motor would be perfect with LSD gearbox and adjustable suspension for less money than a GT3 would be great. Even better if they can drop weight under 3,000 lbs

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

Porsche have spent a lot of time positioning the Cayman so not to impact the 911 too much.

I don't think they would abandon that positioning so quickly. I expect a Cayman will come out which tops the standard 911, but not the S. It would damage the 911 as the premium model too much.

As for pricing, who knows. I'd expect a top Cayman to fall somewhere around the price of a base 911.

It's a shame. The Cayman has HUGE potential. They can make it very very fast for less than 100,000 euros,I'm sure.

I've read an interview of Wolfgang Dürheimer and he said that Porsche is now capable of building its own platform for the Panamera because of the good sales of their current models.

I think Porsche focused too much on making money. It's not a bad thing but I think they risk losing their credibility.
Also,I think that the 911 and its RR layout is now more a philisophy rather than a technical choice.I think Porsche should stop producing the 911.Otherwise,Porsche will build slow, overpriced cars(compared to the others). But this will never happen thanks to the marketing departement.

Your right. In the article they quoted a highly placed Porsche official saying that they would protect the 911 under all circumstance. It is their flagship model.

That's a little frustrating for me. Why does the 911 have to stay at the top if they know they can build something better?
I won't lie, I do like the prestige that the Porsche badge carries, but when I think of Porsche I think of great dynamic sportscars, not just the 911.

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

Remember the 80's. We know we're all expecting the upcoming 2007 928 TT, aren't we?

That said, I wish Porsche offered a GT3 Cayman, even at the same price as the 911. Since it costs the same to build, why not let customers have a choice between rear-engine and mid-engine setups?

I said this in another thread but I think this bears repeating. The main reason the Cayman is floundering is because customers see it as less value for more money than a Boxster. And they're right. As much as Porsche wants to market the Cayman as more than a hard-top Boxster in order to justify a $5k+ premium, customers won't be fooled.
(on the other hand, a Cayman S is as much value for less money than a base 911, so it all evens out! ).

The problem is that at current USD/EUR exchange rates, Porsche has to sell the Cayman for more than the current price of a Boxster. I expect Porsche to raise Boxster prices in the near future to fix those issues, until Boxster and Cayman prices achieve parity.

That, or the result of the 2006 elections forces the current administration to reconsider its foolish economic policy and restores the dollar to its Clinton-era value. Maybe Democrats could make use of this: "A vote for us is a vote for cheaper Porsches!"
(yes, I know I should not expect too much for them either )

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

Damien from a business standpoint Porsche is doing the right thing. The 911 is a cash cow and until sales slow down why should they bother? Continue selling it with periodic tweaking and not worry what others think( several auto critic's). So long as the customer is buying it, that is all that matters.

If I was the decision maker for Porsche, I would do the same thing.

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

    Me too.

Selling the Cayman above the Boxster S price is marketing genius.

That said it won't last, they will have to go even price as sale of Cayman dwindles. Maybe they will include more free options at the current price point.

Interesting, about 4K 997TT/yr globally...vs 5K F/yr globally.....sounds like alleged F exclusivity is more urban legend than reality.....

And given that 997TT and 430 cost roughly same in EU; are similarly easily available in London/Munich/MonteCarlo; and have similar unremarkable resale value.....I can appreciate why our Euro friends scoff at the naive US fascination w/430s....a fascination that would prob quickly dissipate if F shipped 50-60% of 430 produc to US mkt, instead of curr 33%....

Produc vols (and fact lots of SF guys buy cars from both SF region dealers and some source new F's via brokers from LA F dealers) may explain why I tend to see more 430s than 996TTS crawling around SF city streets (>1yo cars of any mfr I view as about as obsolescent/used as any >29yo chick...or last yr's cell ph/iPod ).

Just gotta get both 997TT and 599 in 2H06 to have best exs of latest tech advances and street driving expce offered by P/F...at until 997TTS and Enzo 2.0 (and inevitable, quiet software tweaks for 599 tranny/stab ctrls, etc) come out in next 12-18 mos.....

That's 4k for the TT alone. Add another 30,000+ 911. And it's not so exclusive.

While Ferrari builds 5000+ for all models including: F430, F430 spider, 612, and 599. Still urban legend?

Exactly! They'll have drop MSRP $10-12k to meet sales quota.

Still urban legend ....IMO, only relevant annual produc vol comps are the 997TT/430/65 and up-lvl model lines of any mfr (i.e., the $150K+ price category); these model lines of F/P/MB compete for the wallet share of the same buyer base, w/buyers owning one, two or even more copies of 430/997TT/65/599/612 in their fleets ....and given most mfrs are part of some larger entity, I don't bother counting Fiat produc w/F, Chrysler produc w/Merc, VW-Audi produc w/Lambo, etc etc.....

Prob 90%+ of casual observers can't differentiate 355 vs 360 vs 430; can't determine if a 550/575/612/599 is a F or a Mustang (those horsies all look alike anyway)....and most think all Boxsters/911s look alike, too....but 99%+ of casual (or critical) observers aren't potential buyers of $150K+ cars anyway....

    Come on. A 911 is a 911. Whether it's a 911, 911S, 911Cab, 9114C, 911C4S, 911C4s cab, 911 gt3, 911 gt3 rs, 911 turbo, and 911 turbo cab...did I miss anything?...It's all apples to apples. They all share a lot of same parts.

As for the supposed limit to 4000 units per anum, that's how Porsche thinks they can sell. If they thought they could do 10,000 per anum, that would be the "limit."

I suspect after the initial curiosity, there will a decline in sales for the TT and will force Porsche to produce TTS sooner then they'd planned.

For me going that high it will be too much, don't you agree? I think it should be between Carrera and Carrera S and even then it will make just more confusion!!!

Re: If your a Porschephile you must read the recent issue

I wish porsche would through their product structure to the wind and just be like AMG & stuff the biggest engine into the cars that they can.For example the SLK AMG is faster than some of the more expensive AMG models. And unlike Mercedes, Porsche has the chassis capability to handle the extra HP (meaning they wont just be straight line performers)

It will never happen. The Eleven can't go away and it will never be mid engined. It's not just the markenting department but something that will always be Porsche.
