Tom is correct (asymetrical clutch type with greater locking under braking than acceleration). Of course, remember that in the US, no 911 has an LSD unless you buy one of the GT cars or a Turbo (optional on Turbo but standard on GT2, GT3, CGT). We cannot get one on a Carrera

Someone please explain to me why a performance car, like the 911, would not come with a standard LSD across all ranges in the U.S.
Moreover, someone please explain to me why do we always get all kinds of performance options and technology deleted here in the US across all makes!

But you're paying 30% less than we do (and that's before taxes). The price difference has to go somewhere.

Wait a minute! I thought 911 comes with LSD, and Cayman does not. If 911 in the US doesn't come with LSD, why would one choose a 911 over a Cayman!
Tell me it's not true...

I am true
I assure you that you cannot order a standard 911 (non Turbo/GT model) with LSD. The last time you could was with the 2004 40th Anniversary model (limited production). Other than that, the 1999 996 has been the only US-spec water-cooled 911 with an optional LSD.

Grant is correct, currently in US only the GT3/GT2 models (rear LSD standard) & Turbo (with the optional rear LSD not compatible with Tiptronic) have LSD.
In the rest of the world you can get the optional -20mm sport suspension (code P17) for the Carrera model (its traditional non electronic shock and spring sport suspension, sportier and lower than the PASM) and this includes a rear LSD, but it is not available in US. So the Carrera can come with rear LSD but not US models.

We can't blame manufacturers for each country's tax policies. However, comparing pre-tax prices shows vastly different profit margins.
In Europe, street prices follow the traditional "1 USD = 1 EUR = 1 GBP" convention. So, in most EU countries, we're paying 45% over the US street price. In the UK, even more (hint: smell the coffee and join the dark side!).
However, US prices are indicated before taxes, while EU prices are always indicated after a 15-20% VAT is applied.
So 30% is a fair assessment of the pre-tax US discount.

Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase an after market LSD (either clutch type or torque biasing type) to retro fit a non GT car (997 C2) manufactured or distributed by a specialist transmission company, perhaps a motor sport specialist?
