    Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ??

Hi all, first post and looking to become a new Porsche owner. I was hoping I could get your expertise concerning a 997 I test drove today.

I test drove an 05 997 C2S, black on black today at the local MB dealership that came in on a trade 2 weeks ago. The car is an early 05, that has the 762 launch code, with about 19K on the odo, It's loaded with PCCB, Adaptive Sport Seats, Full leather, Sport Chrono Plus-Nav, Self Dimming Mirrors, 19" Zone Z1 Wheels, PS2's and Bilstein PSS9 coilvers - installed in 07. The stock suspension is not included.

I learned the coilovers were installed by a small, local race shop. The person I spoke at the shop with said it was the first set of coilovers he installed on a 997...the alignment was done elsewhere.

I noticed during the test drive that the steering wheel shimmied moderately at speeds greater than 55. Then, holding the wheel firmly and accelerating from 65 the car would pull noticably to the left, then straighten out the moment I let off the throttle. The car also felt skittery in the curves and straightline - generally not a very stable and planted feeling at speed at all.

After the test drive I stopped by the local Porsche dealer to have a couple of the mechanics who I befriended take a look at it and get it up on the lift. We discovered that the distance from the top of the tire to the top of the RF wheel well was "two fingers" and on the LF it was only "one finger". The LR was also lower than the RR, though not as much.

So, is this just a simple 4 corner height adjustment and alignment issue or could there be other underlying issues involved causing the problems?? I'm guessing it's simple, but I'm hesitant to buy as is. BTW, the sales price I negotiated was contingent on passing a PPI and test drive and I have it in writing. I suggested to the MB dealer I'd like to have them have the ride height adjusted properly and then aligned, then drive again to see if the issues have been resolved.

I appreciate any comments or suggestions. Cheers

    Run

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ?

Are you sure that the previous owner didn't use the car to run in an oval?
The setting you report seems to me an asymmetric setup typical of an adjustable suspension setted for a track day over an oval track.

If not then have the suspension properly checked and adjusted back and then test drive it again.

    Good luck

    Cheers

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ?

Sounds like the kinematic toe adjustment is off - needs a new alignment with corner balance...

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ??

dont buy it - there are plenty of other good cars out there. If somebody has messed about with their car from stock like this I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, irrespective of if its correctable or not.

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ??

Everyone to their own, but unless you really want the lowered hard ride then find yourself another stock car with the PASM system still in place.

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ??

This sounds like it's (1) a problem that may or may not be rectifiable and/or (2) a custom set-up that either (a) had a specific purpose (ovals) or that (b) just didn't work as intended.

In any case, there are lots of nicely depreciated 997S cars on the pre-owned market especially in the run up to the facelift this year. I would give this car a miss and look for another instead.

    Happy hunting

BTW, used prices will most likely fall once the facelift is available.

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ?

Run, like ballmon and others say.

    Why?

Because maint on Porsches is extremely expensive. Massive cost of trying to fix what's wrong with the messed-with car you're looking at will probably kill your enthusiasm for your "new" car.

Among other things? First gen PCCBs are problematic if I remember correctly.

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ??

The folks that installed the PSS9 shocks simply did not do it correctly when they adjusted the height! These are excellent shocks and it should only take a few minutes to fix then all will be fine. I would love to trade my PASM shocks for those, I had them on my 996 and had the same installation problem when they were first installed and then I took them to someone who set the height correctly. No big deal - you are looking at a 'Launch Car' that listed for almost $100K - with all the goodies. Use the poor handling to drive the price down, buy the car and then spend an hour of labor to fix it - I bet it will be perfect. Else let me know who the dealer is and I may trade him my (identical) car which still has PASM.
    Peace

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ?

Another vote here for running for the hills...my friends' bone-stock '05 997S felt absolutely planted and exhibited none of the offensive traits you mention. Find one closer to stock form, it's a fantastic car out of the box.

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ?

Yes, I'm sure of that. If anything it may have seen a track day at the new Miller Motorsports track 45 minutes from here, however the previous owner said it was not tracked. My guess is it was simply poorly installed/adjusted. We'll see. Thx

    Re: Test Drove 997 C2S Today...Suspension Issues ??

Thanks all for your comments and advice. It's always good to get some unbiased opinions. Seems it could simply be an setup issue with the coilovers or it could be something more...

At first glance when the car was up on the rack after test drive the adjustment height on the front shocks appeared to be about the same, judging from the threads showing under the lock ring, which should equate to approx the same ride height on the fronts. With that said, I can't exlain why the LF is ~1/2" lower unless there are other underlying issues.

Rest assured I'm in no hurry to buy.
