    Sport exhausts for 996

    Hi all!

I feel I "need" a sport exhaust for my 3,4 C4. No headers this time, just new mufflers with original cats intact. I leaning towards a Fabspeeed system.
I`m sceptic about claims of increased performance, but it's the sound I'm after!

Any experience on different systems would be welcome!

    brgs,

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

No experience with Fabspeed but I had TechArt on my 996 and opted for Porsche Sports Exhaust and I've been happy ever since .

ThecArt didn't sound like a Porsche at all but since I have installed the PSE, believe it or not, I don't even turn on my stereo anymore.

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

    Björn,

I don't know how the Fabspeeed system sounds. All I can say is that the Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) for the 996 sounds absolutely fabulous.

I had it installed in my car, a C4Cab, roughly 5 years ago and I still get comments (mostly good ones) from friends and by-standers. Let alone the goose bumps I'm getting, particularly when driving through one of the many tunnels here in Switzerland.

IMHO it really is the 'best' sounding 'regular' 996 I've ever heard. BTW, the price of the entire system was CHF1,980 + CHF880 to have my dealer install it.

    Hope this helps.

    Gregor

    I couldn't agree more, it's fantastic

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

You really should hear the Porsche sport exhaust, before you decide. In my coupe, I personally don't think it's loud enough. I don't want excessive noise, however I really thought it would be louder than it is.

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

I've installed 2 Stainless Steel Fabspeed mufflers about a year ago. I'm quite satisfied with them. They sound great and are easy to fit (you can do it yourself). Don't worry about the claimed HP gain, at least I haven't noticed anything. On the other hand, it's quite obvious that the engine breathes much better, that you can feel. PSE is probably even nicer in terms of sound and quite sophisticated with the on/off switch. But price/quality wise, IMO Fabspeed is a better buy. My Fabspeed cost me 950 EUR all incl. (home delivered by courier company). I estimate PSE will cost you close to 2300 EUR all incl. (not only is the part itself more expensive, it also requires a specialised Porsche technician to fit it).

These pics show you the internal difference between stock and Fabspeed mufflers

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

    Thanks for the input everybody!
I'm conviced that PSE are great. Even if they don't claim any performance increase I'm sure that the "original" product is at least as good as any in that department. P are probably just more honest in that aspect... I think the added hp from just a muffler-swap on a car like Porsche are mostly psychological anyway. Which is OK by me.

    What about intake/air filter systems?
Full stock, stock airbox with aftermarket filter or full kit?

    - Dr Carrera,
Thanks for the pix! I'm still leaning towards Fabspeed as the product/price seems hard to beat.

How do you find the noice (sound!) level of the Fabspeed from inside the car? I have a coupe just like you, and jnx's comment is interesting. I want to hear the exhaust from inside the car when pushing on a bit, but I definitely don't want any booming resonance while cruising at a steady throttle. There are sound- and video clips at fabspeed.com but for obvious reasons these need o be taken with a grain of salt...

Is PSE retailed through Porsche dealers and sounds like it is available in the states? What is the o/off switch?

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

@ Björn: IMO Fabspeed is a good compromise between sporty sound and everyday usability. There's no resonance, except between 2.500 and 3000 rpm while accelerating in normal traffic. When tracking the car the moment between 2.500 and 3000 rpm is so brief that you don't even notice the resonance. Cruising steadily at comfortable sound level is no problem. My wife noticed the change but she can live with it. On longer trips, my 2 children in the back even succeed in taking a nap . Of course, you should not expect Lexus or Cadillac sounds If you want to keep that option, PSE would be the right buy for you. But believe me, for the driver the sporty sound quickly becomes addictive. If I had PSE I would not much use the "off" button

@ Rossodino: Indeed PSE is a original equipment part from Porsche AG and must be available in the US. Just ask your dealer or consult the Porsche website.

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

Get the Fabspeed. PSE is way overated IMO, the build quality, at least on the early PSE, is crappy. The newer PSE with the larger "bypass" looks to have a better build. This is the early version, nice.

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

I had PSE retrofitted to my '02 targa and I chose not to put the switch. It takes around two hours to install it this way, or aroundeight hours to install with the switch. It sounds wonderfull, like it's supposed to sound. In fact, I still miss the sound as Porsche doesn't offer a sports exhaust for the turbo.

    Re: Sport exhausts for 996

Check out GHL's on rennlist, eli@pelican has a deal, aroud 700 for the set. I have them on mine, very happy. Slightly louder than stock whilew putting around, when you get on it, sounds like a cup car, louder than pse at wot.
