    996 Changes?

What changes have been made on the 996 since it's introduction? Are any years better than others? I know about the changes on the Turbos already but don't know much about the regular 996. Thanks in advance.

    Re: 996 Changes?

In 2002, motor increased from 3.4L 300hp to 3.6L 320hp, stiffer chassis and different headlights among other small changes...

    Re: 996 Changes?

Before the face lift (MK II) that came in '02, '00 996 got e-gas which '99 models didn't have as well as clear lens in the front HID lights Vs. orange strip like Boxster.

    That's all I can remember.

    Re: 996 Changes?

Thanks guys. That was what I was looking for.

Is the 2002 much better than the '01? I don't think that 20hp is a big deal but what about the stiffer chassis? Is it noticeable?

    Re: 996 Changes?

    Some interior changes:

2002 marked the advent of the glovebox (and the extinction of the little map holder tray underneath the steering wheel).

In 2001 or 2002, the trunk and hood latches (to the right of the driver's seat on the door sill) became buttons.

Cupholders came in 2001 (Audi style), and, in 2002, they became a little better integrated into the front center console (right underneath the air conditioning vents, thus changing the shape of those vents slightly).

Radio changed in 2003 to a different Becker unit with a MOST system.

In 2002, the instrument dials changed slightly (where the "cut out" section in each dial became smaller), and the digital speedometer was moved to the analog speedometer. The 997 apparently has moved it back to the tach.

In 2001 or 2002, the steering wheel changed from a four spoke wheel (with an embossed crest) to a three spoke wheel with a metal crest (first it was silver, then it was colored). The three spoke wheel also has those little ergonomic bumps at 10 and 3.

I think the non-full leather dash has evolved to a better plastic material over the years, too.

That's about all I can remember.

Yes it is. I would suggest you to go after 02 and up models. You get "refined" package with better performance.

From everything I've read the 20 hp difference is noticeable. The motor is more responsive and has better torque (again, from what I've heard). It seems that the value of 996s have been dropping pretty steadily to the point that you could get a pre 2002 model for about the same cost as a nice 993. I would guess that the improved 2002 models won't see this kind of a drop very soon. So if you want to save some cash, get the first iteration, but you don't want to drive a 2002 model and regret the decision. If I were to choose, I'd get the 3.6 liter motor. You'd also probably save some cash if you wait until the 997 comes out, no matter which one you choose.

    Re: 996 Changes?

If you want to go for a 996, go for a facelift car. You can recognize the facelifted cars pretty easy, they all have the Turbo/GT2/C4S/Targa frontlights and 20 HP more power (320 HP or 345 HP with Porsche powerkit).
I cannot recommend buying a 996 before MY 2000 but this is just based on personal experience and the experience of owners I know.

Caution: the new 911, the 997, is soon available worldwide.
As soon as the 997 hits the streets, 996 prices will start to drop and I expect a pretty nice batch of used 996 to be available next year from most dealers worldwide at attractive prices. So don't rush in buying a 996 now, wait if you can.

I also want to give potential C4S/C4S Cab buyers a personal advice: think very well about your buying decision because the C4S/C4S Cab is based on "old" 996 technology and the 997 is definetely the better buy right now, especially the 997 Carrera S. The 997 Cab will be available spring (Germany) next year. You don't have to listen but also don't say I didn't "warn" you. Don't forget that the 997 is much wider than the standard 996 and almost close to C4S width.

    997 C4S?

How different will that car be when it arrives? When will it arrive? Will it have the wider Turbo body? The "Big Reds"? Sports suspension?

I'm not planning on changing my C4S until I see the new one and until Porsche introduce DSG, or whatever they will call it, but it would ne nice to know in advance.
