    Autobahn rocks D

Just a short story about a "race" with a 996 on the autobahn - up to 210 km/h not a big difference.
At 220 km/h the 996 overtook effortless. But then the 996 guy gave up in a long curve at 258 km/h - I didn't try to overtake him, because he used the (left) fast lane already.
Bottom line: I LOVE German Autobahns and Porsche

I never ever felt so secure as in a P-car going beyond 250 km/h

When we went in high speed convoy on the autobahn with you last month we were also amazed at the stability and composure at a speed of 255km/h (159mph). No sweat at all. SWMBO who is normally nervous at high speeds was not at all worried, a pretty good barometer. I was also impressed at the discipline of the German drivers, totally unlike the UK where cars such as ours are all too frequently deliberately blocked by poor and jealous motorists. Next time, I must ask her to take a photograph of the speedometer

    LOL - hilarious.

For those of you not familiar with 'Rumpole of the Bailey', a drama about a crusty old barrister (advocate), "SWMBO" means 'she who must be obeyed'!

    Re: Autobahn rocks D

Same experience I had last year on my trip to Italy.
No real difference in handling and stability between going 150 km/h or 250 km/h.
And yes, the Germans are way more disciplined and considerate on the autobahn than any other people I have experienced.

Was driving home from a trackday some weeks ago and following a fellow trackday attendee in his GT3 (996)...and I must say the GT3 made my Boxey look as if it was standing still. Flooring it from 150 km/h I had no chance in hell of keeping up with him.

Porsche-Jeck, the 996 you were "racing" must have been a non-S, cuz he would have pulled away from you in an S-model.
Unless your Boxey is on steroids or he didnt like going fast.

...who "borrowed" the title from H Rider Haggard's book "She" about an mythical immortal Egyptian queen Ayesha exiled from her home country for murdering a High Priest. This character was supposedly inspired by the Balobedu Rain Queen Masalanabo Modjadji. The title is short for "She Who Must Be Obeyed", a translation of the Arabic honorific used for Ayesha by the Amahagger, a tribe whom she has enslaved.
A film was made based on the book starring Ursula Andress.

    Here endeth todays' lesson.

Yes, it definitely was the 3.6 L 320 hp engine. Of course he also pulled a little bit stronger (compared to the Boxey) at lower speeds, but the real advantage became obvious at higher speeds (> 200 km/h) only. I'm sure it would have looked very very different against a 997 S

Of course it wasn't a real "race", just kind of "private Supertest" Still lot of fun, because it was my first encounter of that kind in my new P. and I prefer to compare the cars' differences in real life rather than studying all the official numbers (0-100 times etc.).

There are a lot of P-cars over here in the Cologne/Düsseldorf region but to tell the truth, 99 out of 100 drivers never push their cars beyond appr. 220 km/h (I drive on the Autobahn everyday, so my observation should have some statistical relevance).
For sure driving at high speed is only one of the many joys of driving a sportscar (and not the most important IMO - some curvy countryroads are the real blast ), but I would hate not to have the opportunity to drive that fast now and then without putting the driver's licence at risk.

Talking about lane discipline: yes it's quite O.K. on the Autobahn compared to other countries but it's not as good as it has been in the old days - in the 70s it has been very simple: the fast lane was more or less "reserved" for the powerful cars (basically P-cars, Merc and BMW) - the rest of the crowd used the right lane

Actually we had a good opportunity to test the excellent brakes yesterday as a young girl (stuck behind a truck driving 100 km/h) pulled over onto the fast lane with her old Golf not realising that we approached with 250 km/h.
My sixth sense told me before that it would happen so I was prepared for some hard braking action anyway. It was far from a real emergency braking but the young girl looked somewhat pale afterwards

Talking about girls - the test against the 996 was somewhat unfair, because the 996 driver was alone in his car whereas I had my wife with me as a passenger

Who wouldn't have obeyed Ursula - ehem, some thirty years ago

PS: dreamcar, thanks a lot for emailing the incredible vid of the Moscow tunnel (I didn't believe my eyes )
Any chance to upload it on Rennteam

Don't be afraid my friend - we'll take it easy with your brandnew toy in September
I just returned from a wonderful top down tour (we have 30*C and perfect blue sky at the moment ) exactly along the roads I have in mind for our joint ride - some 150 km, of which 100 km basically consisting of nothing else than corners and constantly changing elevation
Also had a nice encounter with a 996 TT driver on the Autobahn: we have been cruising with the top down at low speed (120 km/h) due to a speedlimit and the 996 TT overtook us very slowly: the driver leaned over to the passenger seat and started waving and laughing. When the speed limit zone ended he mashed the gaspedal
The funny thing was that he really wasn't able to pull away when we followed for a stretch of 15 km because he had to slow down now and then due to slower cars (my max.speed with the top down was appr. 250 km/h and I would guess the 996 TT reached 270-280 km/h before he had to slow down). So basically he "cleaned up" the fast lane for us . We had several occasions when we approached the 996 TT with 250 km/h or so just when he accelerated again from 160-180 km/h after "cleaning up" the fast lane. We never really had to slow down when coming nearer because he accelerated so effortless from 160 km/h to 250 km/h - very impressive I only can imagine how a 997 TT will pull away with even less effort

    Re: Autobahn rocks D

Sounds great- you're a very lucky man- glad you're enjoying your baby so much! I can't wait! I wish it was possible to "clean up" the fast lane here in the States- that's where slower traffic often camps out.

Enjoy, and be safe my friend. Almost into double digits now- the countdown is going fast.

BTW, I forwarded your German soccer fan pic to a gf and she said she sure hopes women aren't that friendly in Germany.

Double digits Awesome, you're very close already
Your gf does not seem to know very much about German girls Single reaction from my wife was: "From where do you want to get the second girl ?"

    Re: Autobahn rocks D

Yeah, I'm amazed at how fast time is going by - I hope it doesn't slow down until I pick her up.

Nothing wrong with the first girl either.
