    [News] New 4-door Bentley Continental

    And some info:

Bentley has unveiled a new saloon, reviving a classic name from its history, badging it Continental Flying Spur. The all-new four-door Grand Tourer joins the Continental GT coupe and Arnage limousine in the Bentley range. A fourth model, a cabriolet based on the Arnage is anticipated to complete the Bentley range in 2006.

Pricing for the flying Spur is expected to be similar to that of the Pounds112,750 Continental GT coupe that it shares much of its technology with. Most obvious is the sharing of the 6.0-litre, twin turbocharged, 12-cylinder engine which develops 552bhp, which gives the Flying Spur the ability to exceed 190mph. Unsurprisingly with all that power the Continental Flying Spur gets a version of the four-wheel-drive transmission of its GT coupe relative, too.

    Design

Elegant and understated style was the aim of the design team and first impressions suggest they've been successful. The quad headlamp arrangement and bold grille of the Flying Spur are an unmistakable contemporary Bentley trademark, the rest of the car exhibiting stylish, yet muscular restraint. Bentley's head of design, Dirk van Braeckel said: "We were very conscious that the Continental Flying Spur had to make a sporting statement when people first saw it - after all it's a Bentley."

He adds: "From the beginning, Bentleys have been quite reserved when it comes to design. It has always been recognised that Bentleys are much less ostentatious than rivals of similar price. The new Bentley Continental Flying Spur embodies that Bentley ethos of understated elegance."

    Inside

The interior is bedecked in the quality leathers and wood veneers that typify Bentley cabins, chrome bullseye ventilation outlets and organ stop controls ensuring the Flying Spur's cabin is familiar to existing Bentley owners. Customers will be offered the choice of either a four seat layout with a central console between two electrically operated rear seats, or a full-width rear seat.

Standard equipment levels are comprehensive, with four-zone climate control and an advanced infotainment system, Chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen stating: "The Continental Flying Spur has all the technology our customers will want and need. They will not have to trawl through an options list for hours with their dealer because everything is included. What they will enjoy, however, is the experience of tailoring the car to their taste and style."

    Engine

In addition to the sumptuous luxury of the interior the Continental Flying Spur offers supercar levels of performance. The 6.0-litre, W12-cylinder engine produces its maximum torque from just 1,600rpm, ensuring effortless pace. That mighty powerplant enables it to despatch the 0-62mph dash in around five seconds and reach speeds exceeding 190mph - should your meeting be in Germany. Bentley doesn't quote a consumption figures yet, but except little more than 15mpg on a good day.

Four-wheel-drive ensures that all its power can be used, even in poor weather conditions, while air suspension allows you to adjust its levels on the move, from cosseting to sporting. Combined with a six-speed automatic transmission that can either be left in fully automatic mode, or manually controlled by the driver via paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel, the Flying Spur will be able to morph from refined limousine to sports saloon when the mood takes you.

Re: [News] New 4-door Bentley Continental

    Excellent find.

Re: [News] New 4-door Bentley Continental

Beautiful and elegant with a touch of the 'old' style. Just enough 'Bentleyness' too distinguish it from the rest of the luxury sedans. I love it.

If I had the money I would definitely go for it. The rims are a tad too discreet though. Otherwise, it is beautiful inside out.

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

A few days ago, I was invited by my Bentley dealer to a ride & drive event featuring the new Flying Spur.

For any of you that have driven the Continental GT, there will be no surprises. The Spur is merely longer and more spacious. One can sense the longer wheel base through a slightly less sensitive steering feel, but all of the road manners, speed and comfortable luxury are there in spades.

    I want one!

The interior of our test car had Sadle as the main and secondary hides with the standard burr walnut wood treatment:

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

It's a few inches shorter than my Arnage, but it has convincingly more back-seat spaciousness.

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

I had to order my Arnage w/out a sunroof to clear my balding pate! I have about an inch of head clearance with a sunroof fitted to the Flying Spur.

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

The back seat experience is hard to describe, but wonderful.

The rear door windows are quite long compared to the front side windows. They are also longer than the rear door windows in the Arnage. It also seems that the sills are higher in the Spur such that (with all the wood and leg room) there is the sensation of riding in a private rail cabin. It's quite a regal feeling, and one bound to impress rear-seat passengers. Much more the elegant back-seat ride than the Arnage, IMHO.

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

Here' a pic of the rear leg-room. The flash came on for this one and it looks a bit too light to my eye.

This car also has the full width rear seating. I think this configuration adds to the spacious feeling and I wouldn't order the "4-seat" console option for the rear (reminiscent of the Continental GT - see back seat pix in 1st post, top of thread) because of this opinion.

One can play around with all the color and trim options here.

    I'm currently zeroing in on Sadle(main)/Cognac(secondary)/two-tone steering wheel/Dark Saphire/7-spoke 18" wheels.

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

That interior looks wonderful Mike. Not necessarily a fan of luxury sedans, but that seems like a wonderful car for the right occassion.

Let us know if you get one.

A recent Autocar review had the Flying Spur topping out a 208 mph at Nardo! That's a wee bit faster than my CGT!!!

It's about 10 lbs/hp (5500 lbs / 552 hp) - about the same power to weight as a 997 Carrera. And it corners with very little body roll and a lot of grip. It's actually quite a drivers' car disguised as a big sedan.

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

Mike, thx for pics. What's the steering feel of the B like vs S55/65? I've always been uneasy w/cars like S/CL w/monster engines and relatively flat, computer-controlled suspensions, yet steering feel reminiscent of Cadillacs from 80s (or prior)....perhaps it's best to view all these limo-like cars as designed for those who need/want to be driven around (like many in NYC region) where rear seat accommodations and brand image win the day....

Re: Bentley Continental lacks the magic

In the 70's, hideously comical Rolls Royce body kits were sold for VW Beatles.

Apparently they sold some in Germany and the Germans got carried away with themselves. Fast Forward 30 years later....

The plastic radiator grille, VW Phaeton engine, chassis and gauges, and interior bits just dont add up enough to be distinctly attractive as a "Bentley."

Enjoy one if you will, but there is no honest sense of occaision to it because its not honestly a Bentley.

Its really just a VW Phaeton in a German's idea of a Saville Row suit.

You might as well just get a 12cyl Phaeton and chip it for
the extra "Bentley" hp. It has a lower center of gravity, less weight and will cost half the money of its costumed Dresden cousin.

Well, Jim, I guess we'll just have to stick to pre-owned Bentleys, then. One just can't have a new one that's not German in some way or other, including any built since the end of the 20th century. How sad it must be for you.

Which makes all Porsches gussied-up Beatles and Z06 Corvettes are tweaked Caprices with Cosworth-Vega pretentions?

Since you haven't driven a Spur (have you?), perhaps knocking off on the hot toddies while at the keyboard would improve your reputation

I've driven enough cars in my life to know better. I started with a Triumph TR-3A in 1968.

Re: Bentley Continental lacks the magic

    Nah Jim,

There's more to it than that. I don't think the Phaeton has the twin turbos, for one. And the quality of the switchgear and leather interior is vastly different from the VW. Drivetrain similarities aside, the Flying Spur is a much more stylish, even gracious, automobile than the Phaeton. A bold, elegant exterior design and a sublime interior for at least 50K less than the Arnage make this a no-brainer. I don't care what the "old school" Bentley snobs say, this is the best 4 door product with a Bentley badge you can buy. It has a modern drivetrain, a new design that is not confused with any non-Bentley product on the road and while expensive, is still the "value leader" in the ultra luxury 4 door segment.

Mike, I assume the Arnage will be going away to make room for Flying Spur?

And thanks for linking the configurator...personally I like Cypress exterior with painted 8 spoke 19s, Ochre main hides, Beluga secondary hides, Madrona veneers, and Ochre seat belts and carpets. If I wanted a blue car change the above to Silver Lake exterior, Portland main, Nautica secondary, with the seatbelts in Portland but the carpets in Nautica. I couldn't decide whether Madrona or Maple would look better with that combo...I expect you'll spend a few hours playing around with that configurator.

Anyway, keep us posted, it sounds like a fabulous car that would be a beatiful and capable replacement for your Arnage.

Go drive a Spur when they come to be generally available, and see if you still think so. Actually you could try out a Continental GT now, and the experience wouldn't be far off.

If you have ever driven an Audi A8L, the Spur is better to drive, IMHO. We Mid-Westerners like AWD in our off-season vehicles, but we also prefer them to be quick and handle well, too.

Bentley is made all the better by the German techncial know-how to which they now have access. They seem to have kept the style that carried them for the decades after their engineering became "quaint". Without either an American or German (maybe Japanese) owner, they wouldn't have been able to keep up at all. The Continental GT and Flying Spur are the evidence that Vickers having sold Bentley was a good idea.

    You're a mind reader

    Re: Bentley Continental Flying Spur

wow mike! you've got a hand on everything! we had a continental GT last year and we were very pleased with the car! accelerated the same as the SL55 and it is much heavier! what's the retail for a flying spur now if i may ask?

    Re: Bentley Continental Flying Spur

I dont believe that Porsche 911's are are just stroked Bugs or that Vettes use Caprice frames.

And lets leave the Cosworth Vega out of this.

If you drive a old school Bentley 90's turbo, the car has a
predator feel to it, almost like its urging you to go on some illegal caper. I didnt get that same sinister feel in the Continental coupe I drove.

As for Bentley and their "access" to German technology, thats quite easy as they are owned by VW now.

Excuse my prehistoric peferences, but my first car was a 73 2.0 914, so perhaps I suffer from accumulated gas fume effect or right foot down disorder.

Take a look at the new Rolls. You just might like it.

Yep, and that was four up with the aircon going - these new Bentleys are a bit special - had the pleasure of a GT Continental for a morning on private roads/airstip and then on the public highway - you could live in this car if it had a bathroom - a 200mph luxury house, lovely!

Re: [I Drove] New 4-door Bentley Continental

    thanks for sharing mike!
personally i'd keep the arnage, even if the flying spur is the better car of course.

So? Looks like a pretty good idea to me. I saw a new Rolls yesterday with a window sticker of $361k. That Flying Spur is a bargain! Dealers here can't give away the 8 cyl Phaetons. I wonder if they ever sell the 12 cyl Phaetons. On the other hand, we have a waiting list for the Bentley.

Re: Bentley Continental lacks the magic???

Gee Mike. You must sell a hell of a lot of radar detectors! That Spur is gorgeous! I started with a TR-3A also, 1959 vintage. Sports cars were a tad more crude back then but I could blow my neighbors away by crank starting the Triumph.
