    Porsche NA President's letter in response to my letter to Porsche AG Chairman Wiedeking regarding cell phone integration:

    For some reason I can't upload the scan, so here's the important part:

    "The keypad on your central console will soon be able to function as a telephone keypad ... We are currently putting the final touches on a North American GSM phone module for the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system in your 911. With this integrated phone system you will be able to use the keypad to dial phone numbers, while using the antenna, microphone, and speaker system integrated in your car. We expect to have this feature available as both a factory option and a Tequipment retrofit by January 2005."

    well thom ,having seen how much this phone issue bothered you (and i fully understand you),i am happy for you and all north american 997 owners for whom this issue was important.
    i am curious to see the reactions of some people in this forum who told you that you will never have a reply ,or that they dont care about customer..etc..etc..

    As I interpret the response, it seems to me that they will offer GSM SIM card for the PCM in North America.

    Now I have to find a carrier in US, who would provde a duplicate SIM cards. As far as I know, there is none as of yet...

    You'd be doing us all a favor by asking him for confirmation that US GSM carriers will provide a duplicate SIM card. It takes two to tango as they say!

    PS: My carrier is T-Mobile, which is owned by Deutche Telecom, so hopefully they will play ball with Porsche!

    Guys, the US version of the GSM module for the PCM2 will be retrofittable, a retrofit kit will be available through Tequipment department and every US Porsche dealer should be able to order it.
    Placing the SIM card into the PCM2 is a piece of cake, it takes a second. There is a small plastic compartment, you just have to push it, the compartment slides out and inside that little compartment, you have to place your SIM card.
    In Germany (and I suppose in other countries too), we have the possibility to get a so called "Twin" card. You get two cards which actually have different phone numbers but they are programmed in a way that they both answer to the same phone number at no additional call forwarding cost. Disadvantage: you can't use them at the same time. Advantage: no need for setting up call forwarding or/and no need for a second contract for the extra card.

    I don't know what power output the GSM phone in the US will have but over here in Germany and Europe, the PCM 2 GSM phone has a 8 Watt HF output, 4x more power than the maximum allowed power for a regular cellular phone.
    Of course GSM coverage is much better in Europe than it is in the US but from my own experience, there are no problems in big city areas in the US.

    I don't know what frequencies the US version of the GSM PCM2 unit will use but it will be at least GSM 1900 which is used by almost all US GSM carriers. There is also GSM 850 now, so maybe Porsche decides to offer GSM 850 and 1900 on their PCM2 phone instead of the ROW GSM 900 and 1800.

    I had a NEC GSM phone (AT&T Wireless) and it sucked!!! Big Time. Coverage was horrible....but if GSM is the only option that will enable me to use the car phone keypad then i'll get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thom: any update from your dealer or others on when the kit is available, or is this still Jan (trying to get one for my car as well in NJ).

    The letter said it would be available in January. Frankly, unless a carrier is willing to issue two sim cards like they do in Europe(I doubt it), then I'm not sure I want it. I need a portable cell phone and don't want two numbers/accounts.

    GG, the bad reception could have been a function of the NEC phone. I've used GSM for a decade (1st the T39, then T68i, and now Crackberry 7230) and as long as I'm in the area of coverage, reception is great with T-Mobile, which is also number 1 among US mobile carriers, according to JD Powers et al.
