    New Coupe Info

    Some of the guys belonging to Porsche Club GB were at a conference last weekend and in attendance was the Marketing Manager of Porsche Cars GB.

    He stated that the forthcoming coupe will be based on a Boxster chassis, but will not be called a Boxster and its starting price will be higher than that of the 987 S. Details will be released on 23rd Feb, press launch on 23rd May and first deliveries in November.

    I think it's good news that Porsche are going to price the coupe higher than the Boxster. In the UK, a 987 S is Pounds38k, a 997 C2 is Pounds56k. A 2 seater mid-engined coupe with performance close to the 997 C2 would go down a storm at Pounds45k. I can't see it encroaching on 997 sales too much either. The price difference between the cars wouldn't be that great and the 911 image is so strong that it would continue to sell as normal. For people who don't need rear seats and don't care about the 911 heritage (and want to save 10k), then they can go for the [Boxster] coupe. Porsche have a habit of creating niches in the market that you didn't even realise existed (hence all the 996 variants), and I think the new coupe will fill another one.

    I've also heard the Coupe will start in october 2005 (Germany) at prices above the S.
    But in compensation we will get more power!

    I second the "I don't" comment.....

    A coupe based on the Boxster chassis, but costs more than a drop-top S??? What are these guys smokin'?? In order to charge this amount you would have to give it at least 325hp to make it worth while to me (but still way behind other manufactures), and I don't think they will even get close.

    REALLY wanted this car to be special, but it looks like the profit mongers at Porsche have struck again.....you would have to be a rube to fall for this one.

    Already on the waiting list and have a deposit down on this so called coupe, but if these rumors turn out to be true, I'll be taking my money back and turning it over to my BMW dealer on the forthcoming V8 400hp M3/M4......didn't want to do it, but just don't feel like getting bent-over by Porsche for an over priced, sub-class leading attempt. I know a lot of owners/prospective owners that are feeling like this lately......flat out not worth it anymore just to have the badge "Porsche" on the hood and get out-classed by examples that cost a lot less.

    maybe they are gonne make a product half way between boxter and 911?!

    anyway,driving a porsche is another world and excitment than driving those unrieliable BMW's.

    Maybe the Coupe will include PASM and 19"? I don't think so, but we have to await what Zuffenhausen will offer for the money.
    Of course the Coupe is not going to have 325 HP. But it will be at 996 Level in cc and hp. And some years ago some spent a lot of money to transplant the 996 engine in the 986...

    A coupe based on the Boxster chassis should start out about $5K LESS than a roadster, now if Porsche puts a little more horsepower in it and maybe an added feature or two.....you are up to the roadster S price......NOT over.

    The 996 put out 296HP in 1999......now it's way over 300, with the new base Carrera putting out 325. With the competition heating up, the coupe would need at least 300HP to justify any price increase over the S roadster and stay competitive with it's rivals (and it would still be far behind).

    I haven't lost hope yet, but it's not looking good. If I'm going to part with anything over $54K.....it's going to be something up the ladder a little more, and I won't be inflating Porsche's bottom line any more.

    What if the coupe were to be a lightbuilt version of the boxster, for track purpose. Kinda like a Boxster GT3
    That would make sense as far as the price increase goes, and it wouldnt have to have that much horsepower.

    Great point. The idea of a Boxster GT3 is exactly what Porsche should do. With the Lotus Elise coming soon, people will realize that it's not just about absolute horsepower.

    We've been dreaming of this scenario for quite some time, but I don't honestly expect it. Again, if they lower weight, by say 200lbs, and they keep the same 280hp plant from the S, it will be way too close in performance to the base 997.

    We'll just have to wait until someone gets more concrete info. I think the idea of a Boxster CS is a great idea, but will it happen? Probably not.

    Boxster GT3 with 3.0L GT3 dry-sump motor (320 hp and 8,400 rpm), so it has less hp than 997 would be sweet

    Well isn't there more to it than just performance. If it was all about performance: acceleration we would all be driving Merc's. If it was all about handling and fast tracktimes where most of us can handle the car (at lower speeds) we would all be driving a 189 bhp Lotus Exige. In my opinion Porsche could easily make a Boxster CS. Low production numbers, low weight, absolutely no luxury, track specified suspension and then maybe a more sporty engine but not necesarrely much more than 300 bhp. Such a car would appeal to track people and I doubt that many current 997 owners would consider such a car. Be honest how many 996/997 owners believe the Boxster to be an alternative

    How many of you would swap your 997 with a lotus Exige

    I believe there is space for the 987 CS, but one of the essentials for Porsche is that the the car will generate a profit to the company and here we will most likely not be able to give the answer

    What are you talking about?

    The 986/996 Engines are no race but sport engines - without dry-sump! Do you think theyd do a "CS" whith "no slicks!"-limitation in the manual?

    In addition some month ago I read a PORSCHE-statement (approx): "the 911 remains our sport equipment"...

    I am dissapointed as well... I was hoping a coupe version of the boxster (even with a new name) would be at the very least not more expensive thant the boxster... I was waiting for one, too.. Now that it looks like it'll be priced above the S model, it's out of my reach... Well, out of my comfort zone at least, considering how much it'll depreciate in the first 2 years ! Might as well buy a used 997 then ! Damn !

    It might almost make sense to buy a used 987 with a hardtop, deep 6 the convertible top (weight savings) and weld the hardtop on it, and repaint ;-)

    Look at BMW strategy. To maximise the profit they start with the bigger versions, later followed by smaller motorisations...
