The way I saw it in the front facing camera is that it was Hamilton who ran into Maldonado right at the last moment, which given Hamilton's history, is not surprising. Lets see what the stewarts say after reviewing the videos and interview the drivers.

Weird qualifying, some back drivers managed to get in front and that will add some entertainment to the first laps, but not so good for other drivers that may get stuck behiind like Alonso who fastest in Q2 but did not have a single lap without traffic when the slicks got warm enough and has little chances for tomorrow. Good to see Webber putting up a fight, hopefully he will finally have a good race strat for once.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

Button got badly caught out as the track got more and more dry at the end of Q2.

Schumi's wheel literally fell off ...

Maldonado must have snapped after the collision with Hamilton in Monaco (for which LH was to blame). And then here at Spa, Hamilton was overtaking while they were both completing their own hot laps. But to deliberately move over completely to the left on the start-finish straight is just out of order IMO.

Min punishment should be to start last on the grid, max punishment should be disqualification IMO.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

The track turns slightly right where Hamilton and Maldonado collided, in my opinion, Hamilton just followed the outline of the track while Maldonado drove straight.

Anyway, Maldonado had no reason to be next to Hamilton at that time anyway, they were both easing off on their in laps...

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

It looked to me like Maldonado was closing on Hamilton from behind while on the right. LH was gradually moving from the left of the track to the middle then he saw Maldonado coming past so he quickly moved back to the left. Meanwhile Maldonado kept on moving left leaving Hamilton no more room on track. Along the concrete sidewall, Maldonado grazed LH's sidepod and took off LH's front wing. If you see the end of the video clip, Maldonado kept on moving left and ended up at the left edge of the track. IMO that gives it away - there is no way that this was not deliberate. Clear case of revenge for the end of the timed lap as the last straw given what happened back in Monaco.

I agree, Easy, but revenge for what? Hamilton was clearly in front in the busstop -chicane, Maldonado should have yielded instead of keeping track position, he was even blue flagged if I recall correctly.

True that Maldonado was moving left but when the collision happened he was already in front of Hamilton and Hamilton kept his line regardless when he should of given the right of way, he not only had track space still but also could of simply backed off the throttle since the qualification was over. Its just like if it was an overtaking maneuver, when the driver gets in front of you, the driver in front gets right of way to choose his line of entry into the turn, and you need to give up yours. But Maldonado provoked it since the red light had come on so there is no need for an overtaking like that, it was deliverate and completely unnecesary, but Hamilton caused it by not backing away IMO. Its not like it was a quick turn by Maldonado ramming Hamilton by surprise (ala Vettel on Webber last season), it was a slow cross of trayectories they both saw coming and none of them backed away. There is clearly bad blood between them from last race and it got the better of them. IMO both should be punished, Maldonado for provoking such a situation deliverately and Hamilton for causing the collision by omission. That would be a safe call IMO.

I agree. Maldonado has no reason to be there at that moment. He was pi.. off by  LH 's overtaking at the end of  qualification.  And it was a very dangerous place to do that.

Well, Maldonado gets a five position penalty and Hamilton gets a reprimand without penalty, since it was hard to see in video, I follow the stewarts desition on this after their investigation, so I guess it was more Maldonado's fault as some of you said

Hamilton has, in my opinion, played mindgames with Maldonado. One could clearly see that Maldonado gave way to Hamilton in the Busstop chicane but nonetheless the latter pushed him significantly off the line. There was no need for such a manouvre.

I also don´t believe that, after the Start-Finish line, Hamilton swerved back to the left because he saw Maldonado approaching him as you can see by his hand gestures on the video below. Maldonado made the mistake to try the same manouvre Hamilton has done on him two corners before but could not talk himself out of it because a. Q2 was already over and therefore no reason to pass by force and b. his move did not follow the racing line and hence had no competitive motive behind it.

What a race! All over the place in the first half and then Button providing all the entertainment in the second half.

Hamilton was entertaining, too, for about  a minute.

I am glad Vettel silenced his doubters today, on the revered and historical Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. He beat all the challengers, Webber, Alonso, Button and Lewis ("I'm not really quite sure [what happened] to be honest.") Hamilton

Well done Adrian Newey and Sebastian Vettel and thank you  Dietrich Mateschitz for bankrolling the RBR Team

Spa is a fantastic circuit.....  they all should be in that league and favored and get rid of  Valencia or some of the other boring no soul track

I am a fan of Vettel, but am disappointed there is a double Red Bull as this will make the end of season less exiting.

As to Hamilton, I think he might of misjudged where Kobayashi was. Kobayashi kept his line... he could of backed up slightly as he was slower, but he did not have to. Maybe Hamilton thought he was more behind as he did slightly go to the left to take the next corner, and so touching Kobayashi.  Amazing what today's car can take as to crashes. This one was at around 250 km/h . Hamilton was lucky.

Exactly! These circuits like Spa,  create a sense of occasion even on TV.

Maybe Hamilton thought he was more behind as he did slightly go to the left to take the next corner, and so touching Madonado.  Amazing what today's car can take as to crashes. Today it was Kobayashi.  We are losing count with Hamilton!!

Hardly, RBR race tactics during the safety car is who the race for Vettel today. Once again Ferrari and the others screwed up the tactics under the CS and RBR as usual is brilliant at that.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

I think Carlos, he overtook all the above challengers (incl. Webber in the same car) at some stage or other during the race. He also did one more stop for tyres than many.

Very hard tyres may be out, but when Ferrari switched to the harder compound, Alonso's pace tailed off dramatically. A problematic chassis cannot be helped by Pirelli's decision.

I think we have a top driver (not the only one of course), a brilliant design by Newey and clever RBR tactics.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

Pole position and then a 1-2 finish for RBR. A perfect weekend for them despite the weather, the blistered front tyres etc.

Button was thrilling to watch working his way from 19th, at one point, up to a 3rd place podium finish. Well done JB!

I was also very pleased to see Schumi drive so well today .... from 24th to 5th was a really impressive performance.

Alonso did his best today .... the basic problem is that the 2011 Ferrari is too kind to its tyres and simply can't generate enough heat ... it is fine with the soft tyres but the harder tyres just don't warm up on the Ferrari.

Hamilton ... my goodness ... what can one tell this guy? He is a grade 1 fool. He may be exceptionally quick (possibly the quickest guy on the grid) BUT he is forgetting the most simple thing that any driver should know: you only score points if you actually reach the finishing line.

How can Hamilton grow a brain?

Indeed but with one more set of tires than those competitors that he managed to slip on during the SC while the others stayed out, essentially giving Vettel no position loss inspite of the extra pit stop but newer tires than the rest and shorter stints with the other sets.

RBR is the best team as far as race tactings and planning goes, and they showed it today once again, and had a well deserved win for that. Ferrari OTOH always seem to make the worst out of SC's, changing weather situations, etc. Ferrari needs to clean the slate as far as management goes IMO.

Its also surprising that Ferrari at this stage of the championship still has not managed to improve their tire temperature situation. With the softer tires before the SC, Alonso was already second from 8th and gaining almost 1 sec per lap on Vettel, that all changed when Ferrari did not go in for a tire change like Vettel did as soon as the SC was out, but even if he did and passed Vettel, he had no chance of retaining that 1st position as soon as the harder tires went on. Poor show by Ferrari in terms of race tactics and car performance once again.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

Hamilton achieved too much too soon in F1, and that following very easy titles in F3 and GP2.

His life was very easy in motorsport, to a great extent due to his talent, up to his 2008 F1 Title.

From thereon things begun getting harder partly  because McLaren lost the edge. He is not mature enough to come to terms with the fact that he cannot easily win as in the past. As a result he is always unduly aggressive, he often overdrives and destroys his tyres, he commits mistakes and he is never relaxed in and out of his car.

Very immature sportsman without proper professional guidance.
