    For those (still) interested in Mercedes Diesel engines (E class 2018)

    It seems that Mercedes will soon offer a new E 400 d with a 340 hp Diesel engine and 700 Nm torque.

    Car is already Euro 6d TEMP certified, so latest tech.

    0-100 kph acceleration under 5 seconds.

    Availability starting April or May (at least for ordering...).

    Nope, coming to Germany. It is Euro 6d TEMP...

    The Cayenne gets a new Diesel as well as far as I heard.

    The Diesel isn't dead in Germany, it cannot be dead, simply because without the Diesel, it is impossible to meet the upcoming CO2 restrictions and fleet consumptions. 

    This is just the current media hype, it will die down with the new Diesel models.

    This takes a lot of time and ELVs will be expensive in the beginning, unless the government subsidizes them (not very likely, too expensive). Another problem is the charging infrastructure. Even at Porsche in Zuffenhausen/Weissach, you barely have charging stations for the hybrids there. Smiley Smiley

    As an example: My wife's Cayenne consumes around 10 -11 liters Diesel in her daily commute (more of course when I drive it Smiley). My little Mini JCW consumes the same amount of fuel and fuel is around 20 Euro Cents more expensive per liter than Diesel.

    Many Diesel cars with 200-300 hp engines have a real life fuel consumption of around 7-9 liters /100 km, so take a guess which cars will be still around in a couple of years. Smiley They are perfect for the daily commute, Diesel isn't as expensive as fuel, the torque is amazing while driving at the usual speeds here (up to 160 kph) and consumption is ridiculous compared to fuel engines with similar power and torque.

    the new CLS 400d has the new 3 liter straight 6 diesel with 340hp but can only be had with 4Matic in the UK

    Our family car is the Macan S Diesel, perfect for long trips with 7.5-8 l/100 consumption at 140 km/h cruise speed. Torquey, high autonomy, it is difficult to beat.

    Diesel is far from dead, it is still the most efficient means of driving just about anything. Problem with hybrids - I nearly purchased a Golf GTE and would have done so bar the uncertain delivery time - when using the batteries you are using a lot of power to drag round the dead weight of the unused internal combustion engine and when using that you are using fuel to transport the 250kg + of battery pack. Plus batteries use lithium which is toxic.....Smiley Pure electric requires many hours to recharge rather than minutes to fill with fuel for ICE.

    The ultimate pollution free fuel has to be hydrogen, surelySmiley

    Yeah hydrogen powered electric car makes a lot of sense. But let’s see how that pans out. 

    As someone who owns an EV (and many petrol cars so not “converted” as such), I don’t think people understand that you don’t need the same infrastructure with EV as you do fuel cars. Why? Because most people will just charge at home  daily. Very few people will charge outside of the home or only use it occasionally for emergency.

    The "funny" part is: Germany is basically the only country in Europe where there is such a big outrage regarding Diesel cars and driving stops in inner city regions. In other countries in Europe, the Diesel is still number one and nobody really wants to change that. So yes, I think that whole Diesel scandal will die down once the new models are available.

    However, I think that VW made a huge mistake but not handling this whole scandal more generously. They are actually to blame for the protest to escalate and new possible driving prohibitions for Diesel cars in the future. Maybe this was their intention all the way, so they can sell their new models. Smiley Smiley
