    997 PCM MP3 CDs

I recently purchased a 2005 997 Cabrolet that has the PCM. I've been reading posts on this site that say that I should be able to use CDs burned with MP3s in my head unit, yet they do not play. Was there a change to the system? Any ideas why they would not work in mine?

I'm sure someone will answer definitively but I don't thing the MP3 cabability was added until 2006 model year.

    Re: 997 PCM MP3 CDs

I believe you need to the Sat Nav also for the PCM to read MP3's.

    Re: 997 PCM MP3 CDs

If your car is manufactured after May 2005 the PCM-unit reads mp3. All cars manufactured before that doesn't.

Not correct You just need PCM.

My PCM broke down a few months ago and had to be replaced. I took delivery in July '05, so my PCM was already capable of playing mp3. The Porsche technician who replaced the PCM said that the new one will also be capable of playing mp3, since all PCMs since late April '05 have that feature. He even quoted the exact date. I think it was April 21 but I can't remember exactly.

    Re: 997 PCM MP3 CDs

My Carrera S was one of the earlier cars (delivered October 11th, 2004), so a minute ago I went to the garage and live tested an mp3 disk.
    It plays.
My daughter has just added her own conspiracy theory: she says that there may be a compatibility issue, if there are more than 40 songs recorded on one mp3. Maybe someone can comment or test that.

    Re: 997 PCM MP3 CDs

That is really strange. There were lots of threads in the 997 forum with users of early built cars complaining about their PCM not playing mp3. PCM's mp3 playing capability since mid/end April '05 was even announced by RC here:
    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=94898

So, my theory is that your PCM was either replaced during its regular service without Porsche telling you or in case you are not the original owner, it failed like mine and the original owner had to replace it under warranty.

    Re: 997 PCM MP3 CDs

I just checked the Maintenance book and it says the "first service" was April 22, 2005 so I know I'm right near the cut-off. Any way to check the settings to see what version of the PCM I have? I just tried to make a CD-R with about 30 songs on it and it still doesn't work. When I put it in and hit the CD button, it simply says "No Audio CD" (things are not looking up for me.) Is this how everyone uses it? Do I need to use a CD-RW? Has anybody been able to upgrade their PCM via software? Any ideas on what it would cost to swap out the hardware?

I'm looking at $600-$700 for an IPod connection that I'm not even sure if it works. Trying to find alternatives.

    Any suggestions?

You are not even near the cutoff. Delivery date is not the same as manufacturing date. Your car was built in early March so it is way before the new MP3 PCMs were installed and no, your PCM will not play MP3s.

On the other hand, you could install both satellite nav and an iPod connection.

Press AM-FM, AUDIO and SET buttons in that sequence to enter the PCM's service menu. You can find the PCM's serial number and lots of software version numbers in there. Unfortunately, there are no evident date specifications in there. So, you need to find someone with a PCM capable of playing mp3 who got his car in April/May '05 to compare with his PCM's serial number and software versions.
According to the thread I quoted above one of Rennteam's mods could be bothered with that inquiry

No. However, there is a software upgrade to fix problems with the PCM's internal CD player (stuck CDs, not recognized CDs), but to my knowledge that doesn't add mp3 capability if it wasn't there before. For details see Link to PCA.org W610 Campaign
