    Off topic help ..

Anyone on here have a Chrysler Voyager 2.8 CRD AUTOMATIC ..

Since ownership I am always in the damn station filling it up with Diesel . Filled it right up the other day , then did 22 mile and filled it up again to check my suspicion , the tank took 9.5 litre thats over 2 UK gallons which equates to around 10 mpg . Now the car does mainly town driving/school runs but still 10 mpg is a joke . Also rang the dealer and had a chat to some salesman , he said ""town driving thats why"" , lol..

I also have a new Toyota Landcruiser LC5 D4D 3.0 , and this is way better on MPG..

    Any help/opinions appreciated..

I don't own a Voyager, but do note that 9.5 liters is a little LESS - not more - than 2 UK gallons, so your 22 mls will be at worst 11 mpg! Already a 10% improvement.

Seriously though, a) I think your car is still prety new, so will not be broken in, and b) 2 gallons/22 miles is much too little to go by, because minor differences in the level in the tank when filling up can materially affect the calculation. Work it out over a tankfull of fuel to reduce possible errors. (1 liter error in 9 is much worse than one liter in 90).

Thats my next call , I filled the tank up and now I shall run it dry..Got to get the correct tank capacity though becuase this seems to vary on searches , such as the AA states its approx 16.6 gallon tank and my handbook says its holds 20 gallons , phone the dealership tomorrow to confirm..

    Thanks fritz..

    DON'T RUN THE TANK DRY!

I don't know if you meant that literally, but apart from the danger of coming to a stop somewhere inconvenient or dangerous, letting fuel level get too low can potentially ruin a catalytic converter on a modern car, if the engine misfires intermittently due to low tank level in corners, etc..

Just run it down to the lowest level you would normally feel inclined to refuel, and tank up on both occasions at a gas station where the car stands dead level, to reduce refilling errors.

    Re: Off topic help ..

    Throt,

Poor MPG on a diesel is usually a sign of an injector problem on one or more of the cylinders i.e. your engine is being fed a lot more fuel than it needs. I'd insist that the dealer checks it out ASAP as there is no way your consumption should be that low with a diesel engine.

    Throt,
Disregard the reference to "catalytic converter"'. When I wrote that, I'd already forgotten that we were talking about a diesel.

It was way past my bedtime.

    Re: Off topic help ..

No worrys fritz thanks for your help , and ISUK ,,

Had a look at the on board computer and it states a figure of 22.5 mpg , anyway I will not run it dry as in get a can out on the side of the road , this I would not do , dont even like letting it run low so the warning fuel light comes on . Tank capacity is 16.5 UK gallon but when the fuel light comes on you apparently still have 5 gallons in the tank so I will use the 11.5 gallon then check the mileage , and working it out I am looking at getting around 260 miles and still having the 5 gallon reserve . If its still poor then I will take it to the dealership to get things checked out , just want to check my suspicion again ( for the third time )..

Thanks guys for your help , I let you know the outcome.

To get a much more accurate calculation, just fill-up the tank and see how many gallons you put and check how many miles you did since the last time you filled it, then divide the 2 and off you go ...

With your method, it's not sure you'll be able to refill at the exact time when the reserve light will go on ...

    Re: Off topic help ..

Thanks Eric , I am in the process of doing it this way now..

I shall see on filling up ..

    Thanks..

    Re: Off topic help ..

Hi guys filled it up and done the Math .

It works out its doing 15 mpg with 200 mile tank range when filled and thats driving it very sensibly. Its not good enough from a 2.8 diesel , online searches reckon around 25 mpg (some say 28 mpg) for urban driving so its way off.

Taking it back to the dealership on the 13th of next month to check it out..

    Thanks..

    Re: Off topic help ..

    Update , I forgot ,,

Well it went back and they confirmed my suspicions ,, its doing 13.2 mpg around town and 20 mpg on a long run..

The funny thing is though is that they gave me the results and just handed my keys back expecting me to just say thanks and goodbye ,, not the case ..

It ended up them saying that they reset everything back to the factory settings , they now want me to re-check the consumption and if its not any better they will go to the next stage , whatever that might be ?? , but it better be significant ..

    throt..
